Job well done. If you could, I'd be grateful to know a bit more. In particular, I'm curious about the carriage design & door/interior layout. Here in Britain we have the Class 745 Flirts, which have longer carriages and wider doors, whereas the (boarding) doors on these seem quite narrow. The 501 is also fully articulated all the way through. Would be interested if you could shed some light on the choices, thanks.

Its a common thing in Switzerland to enter a long tunnel in pouring rain then emerge the other end into glorious sunshine. I've driven through the Gotthard road tunnel many times and this has happened frequently. Its a lovely experience. Beautiful train and another great video. Always enjoyable , particularly your Swiss adventures. So far , yes, the Gotthard base tunnel is the longest but will it be superseded by the Brenner base tunnel currently under construction?

Announcements languages vary by routes, it's basically always German and English + local language of where the train is stopping on its route (french or italian) so in this case your train is travelling through italian and german speaking regions only so italian, german and english announcements

Basically it is just all local languages along the route + English. As almost all SBB long distant services enter the German-speaking area, you will almost always hear German announcements, but there are some peak-hour IR trains that only operate within the French speaking area without German announcements. And I think there are also some IR routs without English announcements, e. g. IR37, but I'm not shure about that.

To be precise they even switch: They must have been Italian, German, English for Ticino and then German, Italian, English for the remainder of the trip.

Also, to make things even more interesting: there are three different jingles, depending on if you're in the German, French, or Italian speaking part (no SBB service in Romansh regions).

Even as it is a 'glorified FLIRT' from a technichal view (it shares indeed many parts), I totally love the Giruno! It has only two drawbacks: it doesn't operate on the routes I use on a daily basis and SBB has far too few of them on stock😇 Announcements: they are done in german and italian on Ticino bound trains and german and french on trains bound for western Switzerland. And vice versa off course. English is on top on all international and intercity trains. However there are no multi language announcements on regional and Interregio-trains, as long as the do not cross a language border. If they cross language borders, you'll even find multi-language announcements on S-Bahn trains. And on the interegios, where the announcements are not from a record but done by the conductor, it heavily depends on her/his mood and language skills🙈🙃

My first time watching your channel. A very well-made and informative video. Not bombarded with information but some useful tips, and letting the camera tell the story. I'm a massive fan of Switzerland and its railways - a member of the UK-based Swiss Railways Society. My favourite Swiss train or route? Gosh, so hard to pick only one. I'll cheat and pick one standard and one metre gauge. On the standard gauge, the BLS old Lotschberg route just pips the old Gotthard route. Note, the new base tunnels on both routes are amazing engineering and really speed up long distance journeys but, as you say in this video, the old routes have the scenery. On the metre gauge, its got to be the entire Bernina Express route from Chur to Tirano.

The plattforms are the right height! The train has different floor hights to accomodate the diffrent plattform hights in Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Some doors are for the higher plattforms, some for the lower. because of this you always have some doors that are to low or to high. Other trains like the SOB FLIRT trains you mentioned also are low floor but they fit on all doors as they don't exit Switzerland. (Also these copper colored SOB trains are only technically FLIRT 4 sets, they are actually called Traverso and are really liked by the public)

I don't agree, you can see thar at the boarding the platforem level in Lugano is lower than the lowest step of the train. That means it's not even 55 cm high. So it's not the right height. It's written in the video that platform gets higher in the middle, so it's probably only an old unrefurbished extension for some very long trains.

Great video, favourite train the WAB up to Wengen from Lauterbrunnen, but that's mainly because I am so happy visiting Wengen, Trains in Switzerland are so much easier to board these days, no huge climb up from the platforms, much of this is due to the Swiss trying to make everywhere accessible for the disabled which as resulted in most platforms throught the country being raised from their original levels to a point where there is minimal height difference between train floor and platform. Language wise the trains to Jungfraujoch also give out information in Japanese (maybe Chinese now as well) due to the number of tourists from those areas, English was chosen as so many people learn English as either a first or second language now making it a good choice for tourist anouncements

People have already commented about the announcements, but basically it's always the local language first, followed by the language of departure / arrival (in case it's different) and English last. Therefore for you trip it would have been Italian - German - English before the Gotthard, and German - Italian - English after. If you pay close attention, you can also notice that the 3-notes jingle before the announcements is different when the train is in a particular region: in Ticino it plays the musical notes F-F-E flat (FFEs), in the German part it plays E flat-B flat-B flat (EsBB) and finally in the French part it plays C-F-F (CFF).

Nice video. I like these Giruno, but nowadays I have to say my favorite Swiss trains (appart from glacier express, etc) are the traverso (Flirt 4) from SOB. So well designed with all the comodities you would want inside, big windows and excelent confort. The trip from Zurich or Luzern on the old Gothard line to Ticino on these trains is a must for anyone that enjoys train travel. Also a note on the confort in these trains 2nd class vs 1st class, usually 2nd class is also pretty confortable, but, and this is a big but for me in Switzerland, 2nd class can get really crowded due to the fact that most trains don't have seat reservation, if you get a train that's full you might not have a seat and place to put your bags for example. And this happens a LOT. In summer or during holidays you might want to consider going 1st class just for the space you usually have available and a seated place.

The line section connecting Arth-Goldau, Zug, Zurich and St.Gallen is well know to be the most broblematic due to the general tightness off the route, frequent problems with weather and vegetation and high Swiss maintenance requirements at the Bahn Strecke 2000 which is the tunneling section the line use in order to enter Zürich Hbf. We've done this journey several times as tourists, both driving and by train. Our first train journeys were on the old TEE sets, very comfortable indeed. In the pre-tunnel days, the trip between Lugarno and Bellinzona did take longer, but for unhurried tourists the scenery more than made up for the extra time. I have travelled from Zurich to Lugano many times over the classic route but never through the base tunnel. There are so many Swiss rail routes that are scenic, makes it hard to choose. The classic Gotthard route has got to be my favourite followed by the SBB/Sudostbahn journey from Luzern to St. Gallen via Rapperswil. Also from Montreux to Geneva and Zurich to Lausanne and the Montreux Oberland Bahn from Montreux to Zweisimmen.

My favorite Swiss train has to be the RABDe 500 “ICN” or InterCity Tilting Train. I love the mood, it’s very comfy with the imo best 1st class I’ve ever been in. All units are currently getting refurbished and they operate mainly in western Switzerland. Definitely check one out if you get the chance!

I must say modern swiss trains are incredibly fast and comfortable to travel in.But we shouldn't forget the contribution of older electric locomotives of sbb such as ae4/7,be4/6,re4/4,re620,ae6/6 and the crocodile locomotives in the development of Swiss railways. After 2000 sbb opted for only trainsets and re460 locomotives as part of the Bahn 2000 project,so I guess these are the last passenger locomotives still in service and will be there for many more years to come. But still I miss the old electric locomotive hauled trains, railcars and diesel railcars.Neverthless your video is mindblowing.Swiss trains are truly enchanting

Thanks for the great video! The design of the train is very nice. Though I hear squirking noise continuously, probably from the bogies when taking curves. From my experience, the suspension and sound isolation of Stadler train tend to pretty poor, compared to their counterparts such as TGV, ICE, RAILJET etc.

Wow! Just found this video from a recommendation. I am thoroughly impressed! Good length and I like how you showed the bathroom and kitchen areas. I was glad to see the various storage compartment and test the cushions on the seat as well. I like how you showed the map in the beginning and walked around a bit for the outtro. This is very good editing! I was however curious to hear the announcements in all three languages rather than just the English. Overall I still think this is A+ quality and the combination of the overcast rain and the train sounds had a very much ASMR vibe to it :)

I travelled onboard one of these from Venice to Arth-Goldau but I don't like the seats too much, they aren't the comfiest SBB has. You asked for comments Language. The first announcement is in the language of the region, followed by the others, and on main trains, English. Timings. Switzerland is renowned for its rail connectivity and cross-platform changes of train are a blessing. This made a long trip from Zurich to Milan's Malpensa airport an easy and rewarding journey. Costs. Switzerland IS expensive. Be prepared. Worth every CHF franc. Favourite lines. Four: Glacier Express, Jungfrau, Golden Pass Panorama, Pilatus. But even minor lines reveal so much of the beauty, the orderliness that makes travel in Switzerland a total pleasure. Thank you for your comprehensive trip report.

Great video! Re your question about trilingual announcements - that’s certainly the case on all EC/IC-class services in Switzerland, and Geneva/Zurich suburban lines. Not sure about other local routes. The primary language does change dependent on region though (you may have noticed as you travelled north that Italian was announced first at the start of your trip, but this will likely have switched during the journey)

Hey mate. On the Giruno you can recline on First and Second class your seats to allow more comfortable travelling. In my opinion both first and second class seats are on the firm side. I think the IC2000 Wagons are comfortable ( NON Revised wagons ) And for sure the EW IV is the most comfortable wagon/train SBB has

Riding on the SBB can be quite relaxing. The laying of the tracks and the care given to detail (as I have first hand witnessed in Bern, when they laid some tracks there on the west side headed to Kerzers) is so precise that it makes for such an enjoyable quiet ride and sometimes you just don't realize how fast you are traveling. The locomotive looks nice and aerodynamic and it is a mixed bag to travel through the Gotthard Base Tunnel as you will not see the beautiful mountain scenery that is on either side of the above shorter Gotthard Train Tunnel, but you are compensated by gaining a drastic savings of time! Thank you for the video and I look forward to more. Hopp Schwiez. BTW if you have the time and want to go on the older above-route train, probably now an S-Bahn (local stops) you just need allow more time for your trip. It is worth the time to take to see the mountains and there is one or two loops where the train loops above where you have already been below. Fantastic scenery and it should be less crowded than the old days when it was the main ICE.

@@NonstopEurotrip Thanks for getting back so quickly to me....A quick note; I just looked at the Swiss Rail Map and there are actually five loops, (four loops south of the older higher Gotthard Tunnel that are in Ticino between Sobrio and Airolo, and one loop just north of the north portal of that same cantonal dividing tunnel around Wassen, with first a very tight reverse S-curve just before entering that final loop heading north. I myself who have been on that route at least 6 times, did not realize how many loops, (where the trains loops over or under the tracks it had just been traveling on in the previous five minutes or so), are really on this older stretch.

Regarding the platform at 15:55, you were in one of the only two doors per trainset that are at the same height of the (standard swiss) platform, at 55 cm height. The reason why all other doors are higher (e.g. have a step to board) is because this train can travel to Germany where the platforms are at 76 cm. If you noticed, the two lower doors are located in the only two coaches having two doors each (per side) and wheelchair accessible toilet (these are the two passengers coach near the restaurant, one 1st and one 2nd class). This allows a wheelchair to board and disembark everywhere (CH or DE) as long as they remain in that carriage. When this train stops in a german station, all doors are at platform level, except the two at 55 cm that will remain closed in Germany. Happy travel.
