In this video, Daniel goes over a few helpful tips and tricks for properly using a swivel knife, from stropping your blade to tapering your cuts. And for a fun twist, we have a swallow design you can practice with, rather than your typical lines and curves. Practice this piece every few days and watch how much you've progressed as time goes on!

Great content. Thumbs up. As a soon-wanabe-leather-projects-amateur creator, doing my homework first, I just love the idea of the difficulty indicator. It just help AAaaaa lot to find my way through the process. Cheers.

Thanks. I also just sit back and look at the work and think. There is nothing like putting a mark (finger nail) or upside down stamp. Yep done both. 😄 i got my dads leather tools after he passed. He made some amazing work. I hope to pass it all to my daughters. Some of his old tools was from the 70s. 😄

Many of my tools are from the ‘70’s, you act like it was a long time ago. Oh wait….damn it I got old! 😂😂😂😂

@asmith7876 I used to think, and I'm sure you did the same, old tools were 1850's to turn of the century (20th century for you younglings). Now even mid to late 1900's is old and I never thought that until recently. One thing for sure, getting old isn't for the weak. 😉

An alternative to tracing film is to cover the leather in cling film (Saran wrap) put a paper print on top and trace along the print with a red ball point pen.

It's fascinating to watch and I'd love to be able to do it myself, but I'm just too clumsy for it... 😔

Nah...unless we're talking about some kind of physical imparement, its all about practice. It's no different than the 5 year old trying to learn to ride a bike. "I can't...I can't...I can't...oh wow! I'm doing it!" Keep practicing and you'll be riding the trails before you know it! Now, go make something amazing!

This video brings up a question. The xmas ornament project i mentioned to you last year is going to feature a name at the bottom of the project. I DONT want to letter stap but cut and bevel the name on the project. How would i go about beveling letters if i dont have a beveler?
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
Thats a tough one. If you can get your hands on a steep edge bevel, that would be the ideal route. If not, you could try a modeling spoon, but its far from ideal. Sometimes you just gotta have the right tool. Let me know what you decide on!

@@DanielReachCreations Will do! I actually forgot I had a modeling spoon so I will see if i can create the effect before the project is fully laid out and ready to go

Thank you for producing these videos for all of us to learn. I am learning and don’t have any experience, my question is, if the purpose of the swivel knife is to cut into the leather, could one achieve the same results cutting it with a exacto knife? I guess I will know the answer until I try a swivel knife myself. But I’m interested on your insight, or whoever else for that matter. Thank you
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
Well, a swivel knife does several things that an Exacto doesn't. 1. Not to state the obvious, but it swivels. To get the nice smooth cuts, you really need to be able to turn the blade without stopping its forward motion. 2. The blade is much wider, which opens up the cut. This is really helpful when beveling. 3. A swivel knife blade isn't as sharp as an exacto, which is a good thing. It's realy easy to cut through leather with an exacto, which is not what we're going for. We only want to cut about 1/3 through the leather. Great question though. I'm sure lots of others who are new to the hobby wonder the same thing.

@danielreach5618 they do have swivel exacto knives. They use them in scrap book stuff. Just pointing out that. Otherwise I think you covered the differences.

Hey Daniel, are you still looking for a name for these segments? How about "Elements of the Leatherverse "
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
I am still playing around with it. Out of respect for Chuck, I'd like to stay away from "Element" in the title. Out of respect for Weaver, I probably shouldnt work my channel name into the segment for Weaver. But it's got a nice ring to it!

Ok, so I've got a newbie question, what purpose does cutting decorative lines in the leather serve, is there another step to add like a 3D look? I made a bible cover that I want to put praying hands and a cross on the front that my son drew !
@warrenpeters2554
@warrenpeters2554 Жыл бұрын
After you swivel knife it, you have to go back through with a beveling tool and a hammer to stamp down one side of the groove the swivel knife made. This will give it the 3d effect.... if you search tooling leather, there will be tutorials. Hope this helps and good luck

The decorative cuts add to the flow of the project, which helps pull your eye. As far as giving it a 3d look, Warren had it right. Thats called tooling, which is what gives it that diminsion. We've got some great videos on the Weaver channel geared towards beginners, and I have some on my channel, The LeatherVerse. Good luck!
