I just finished reading “Anatomy of drumming” by John Lamb. He advocates that its important to move the whole leg, and the hip, rather allowing them to move, to avoid tensing up by deliberately trying to hold the knee and hip still. James is saying a similar thing here, but the key is to stay relaxed when limiting the motion of the knee.

Hi James, I have a question. I asked myself if the swivel technique mastering needs to mastering some other foot technique, especially heel down ans heel up or if it is an independant technique ? Thanks a lot for your videos and work !!!
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Developing the heel up motion will surely help to get a better understanding of how to develop the Swivle technique! The 2 techniques have very different motion direction and the energy is generated from different part of the foot, but the heel up is great to master the ankle isolation and will help in developing the swivel motion in an easier way.

@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, glad you like the videos! So, the first stroke, should be a leg motion stroke, which ctivates the pedal and works against the spring tension with the weight of the leg, after the first stroke you should control the swinging of the pedal with the lateral Swivel motion by just using the ankle motion and isolating the rest of the leg from it, so make sure that you can actually do the swivel motion just with your ankle first and then apply it to the pedal. I hope this explanation helps

This might be a stupid question but, when you start working both legs together. What is the order of the motion of each foot? So if I start with my right leg, swiveling to the right, is my next move left leg swiveling to the right or to the left? or is my next move swiveling to the left with my right leg like a double and then swiveling my left foot right and then left? hope that makes sense.
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all! I just made a video about this question that I will release in the next weeks. But basically, there is no better way of doing it, what comes easier to you, just do it that way. To me, it felt more natural to do IN-IN-OUT-OUT (meaning the heel motion) but some of my students do the opposite and other do in-out-in-out. I wouldn't force myself to do it in a way that is not natural to me because it's just extra work and it doesn't change the result :)
@JoseMorales-jn5qw
@JoseMorales-jn5qw 5 жыл бұрын
Yeh i know what you mean, the other night i was trying to figure it out and the way it felt better for me was out-out in -in.. haha wich is the total opposite from what you just said.granted i only worked on it for like 10 min cause i had rehearsal but i guess i need to give it time. i have my hi hat pedal set up right next to my left pedal touching side to side . and i noticed i keep hitting the hi hat pedal, maybe with time ill control that. i also notice my right foot keeps moving back as i do it. i guess i just need to keep working on it. looking forward to your next video.ty
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, keep working on it and maybe move a little bit the hi-hat pedal in case you keep hitting it with your foot, I did the same because the Swivel motion does get outside of the pedal board a bit. Usually when the foot goes backwards is either because you're sitting too high and it's a balance problem or you are contracting the thigh

@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, yes, you don't have to think about the vertical motion, just the lateral one with your heel (like turning off a cigarette with your toes). To know if you're doing the right thing grab your thigh and check if you're ankle is able to do the motion without involving the leg, if you can then go on the pedal and do the same and see if you're able to synchronize the ankle motion to the pedal motion.

At 12:10 you start switching from ordinary "heel up" to "swivel." It's unclear to me what the difference is. "Swivel" looks like the "heel up" except you swing your foot side-to-side. So I cannot tell what advantage you get from the swivel. It would seem like an ordinary "heel up" technique is just as good.

It's not a dumb question, is a good one! The weight of the leg (or at least partially, since we'll be holding it up to free the ankle) and of the foot on the pedal will create enough pressure that, once the pedal is swinging, it will be enough to execute the Swivel.

Ahah, that's so weird because I thought I did! I've been teaching it for a decade to hundreds of students and made a DVD about it too, but I guess YOU are right and know better than me man!

If you're looking for the 3 minutes video with the 1 exercise that will fix all of your issues instantly, you're in the wrong place. This channel is for people who are really dedicated to learning and get in depth in the topics and don't mind spending 15 minutes of their lives whatching and listening to an explanation. Sorry.

Sorry, but every video starting with 5 min talking is a bad video. I don't get it. get right in to it, explaining during or after.
