Motif in literature means repeated pattern - image , sound , word , symbol , that comes back again and again within particular story . For example betrayal and forgiveness. Motif known as theme. Motif referred leitmotif. This could be melody within piece of music. In poetry and literature motif is recurring image or theme that appears throughout work to reinforce deeper central meaning. Thank you for your wonderful educational literary channel. Happy Independence Day in advance.

Before i watch imma make an educated guess based on what a song motif is and assume that a writing one is a repeated phrase, such as amphibia’s “Something i should have done a long time ago, standing up to you!”

Can I say for instance "sexualized violence during the Holocaust is the main motif in Alexandria Szeman's novel The Kommandant's Mistress.

Hi, Nora. We haven't read Szerman's novel, so we can't say for sure that this is the main motif within it, but if a particular action recurs in the plot again and again, it is safe to say that it is also a motif--this one extraordinarily awful. And if you have spotted this motif, you could ask how the author is using it to shed light on certain themes within the novel--the relationship between gender and violence or gender and power under the horrific conditions of the camps, for example.
