In this indie game devlog I implemented the basics of sword fighting and melee combat, and I modeled a Xiphos, which is a type of ancient Greek sword. I'm extraordinarily satisfied with how the sword model turned out, and I think it's easily my favorite model of all the ones I've made so far.
I also fixed a couple bugs, and made some improvements to my low poly shader so that I can set the smoothness (shininess) on a per-vertex basis.

3:15 Wondering what your solution was for this! I've been struggling with it myself. That sword model looks awesome! In my opinion, having food instantly heal you is super important for fighting games, and makes the fights last longer and have more depth since you can choose to retreat and heal or try to kill your enemy while they're weak. Think splash potions of healing in minecraft, bananas in Sea of Thieves, and healing spells in League of Legends. However, this mechanic isn't unique, and wouldn't add any more depth to your gameplay than it does to those games. I think limiting which food the player is able to eat would make it really annoying to find and eat food, and turn it into a chore. Personally I'm not a big fan of the "food groups" mechanic because when I'm playing an intense pirate game I don't want to be worrying about my diet. On the other hand, since you are pirates, maybe some kind of simple scurvy mechanic could be interesting. Maybe fruit is more rare and requires you to land on islands to collect, but heals you more than meat or bread.
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
I basically just have a state machine for my gear, so each item inherits from the same abstract base class with a few methods, and then I have a field for the active gear item. That way the logic gets used for whichever item is active. If we take the splash potions example, they don't stack, meaning you can only carry a limited amount, while regular food does stack and you can have much more of it, but it doesn't heal instantly. So limiting the consumption of insta-heals in some way would be similar. I know what you mean about the food groups mechanic though-then again since I want this game to have some survival aspects, it would make sense for different foods to serve different purposes. There's definitely a lot to think about :P

I think Mount and Blade has the best melee combat mechanics and you could copy some of its features. Some differences: - Instead of stamina to prevent infinite blocking there is 4-way directional blocking so the player must actively block from different directions, shields block all four sides but they have HP and once they reach zero they break. - There is a subtle riposte mechanic after successfully blocking an attack with a weapon, if the player launches an attack from the same direction as the enemy it will parry the attack and make the player's subsequent attack very quick. It's called chamber blocking and it requires quick reflexes to avoid it without chamber blocking the chamber block. - Power attacks are not really a thing but speed bonuses are given to attacks that carry momentum (there are goofy scenarios when spinning crazy fast and delivering an attack can instakill). - Weapons that are heavier than the blocking weapon can break through the block and knock over the enemy, or interrupt their actions by releasing the attack before its ready in exchange for doing less damage. For the sword: It's different and cool, reading some wiki pages it seems like the Romans adopted this sword from the Greeks but switched to the gladius because it was better at thrusting and slashing.
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not planning on having directional blocking or attacks, just because that requires giving other players a chance to react, and with latency that's complicated. I may be able to figure it out, but it seems like it's more work than it's worth, especially for me as a solo dev. From what I'm seeing on Wikipedia, "the xiphos' leaf-shaped design lent itself to both cutting and thrusting", whereas the Romans "generally led with the shield and thrust with the [gladius]". Thanks for the feedback :)

Hey Tom, great work! I have 1 question, how would you go about creating game rooms on the Server and with restrictions for example (Room4, 10 players max, game mode SURVIVAL) ? would it be as simple as creating a Dictionary of roomID and Room instance and assigning players to a specific roomID and handling packets based on room/playerid ? asking this out of curiosity because the Server would practically accept all players, instead I would want to know how would you go about having separate active game rooms similar to CSGO or something. For the combat system, I don't really like the charging heavy attacks mecanism. I think it would be interesting to have a attack, a feinted attack, and a block. the block would activate for a certain amount of time, let's say 0.5 sec, and if you block an attack, you can counter attack it (advantage) but if you don't (the oponent didn't attacked or feinted), you have a cool down where you can't block nor attack, so spaming block is counterable. That way, combats will be about blocking the rights attacks, countering them, playing smartly around feints, not spaming attack or block all the time. Sorry for bad english, or bad explainations, I've tried to be as clear as possible ^^'
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't really be a charged heavy attack-the way I'm picturing it, it's more like the same attack but the actual damage dealt and the length of the follow through depend on how long you clicked for. Maybe it won't work as well in practice as I'm imagining it, so I'd need to try it out. For this feinted attack you're proposing, are you just thinking of a separate animation that looks similar to an attack but doesn't do damage? What mouse input would I use for that (since right & left click are both taken)? And how would players be able to tell whether it's a feint or an attack? With latency in play, that could easily get messy since opponents would need to be given time to have the chance to react before taking damage...
@virgilehenry439
@virgilehenry439 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomweiland It's part of the system in for honor's combat system (even tho it's more complex) but it's like, the attack animation start and stop mid air, so your oponent think you attack, try to block, and then miss his block, giving you opportunity to actually damage him (works with the system i proposed). It does require another input tho (pressing "e", or "shift" before the attack, or something) It would make combat system more interesting to my mind, and add variety. The players, to win will have to mix up between feints and real attack, and get creative around it. By the way I'm on your discord (as Unreality) and if it really interest you, would love to talk about the combat system !
@davaronas686
@davaronas686 3 жыл бұрын
Great work! I don't quite understand though why would not just set several materials to the sword, and you can configure them one by one, however you like. Alternatively, you can create textures if you feel like several materials would make the performance worse.
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
I'm explaining this from memory, so it may not be entirely accurate, but every time an object needs to be rendered with a different material than the last, Unity has to set a bunch of stuff on the GPU which is some of the most time consuming work of the rendering process. The less materials you have in your scene, the better, and while using a texture would allow me to have a single material for the sword, I'd still need a material for each model. By doing it this way I can use a single material to render every opaque object in the scene (sword, ship, terrain, pistol, trees, rocks, etc.), which is more efficient.

I think that wether you go with a instant health regen or a saturation/slow regen will depend on how much you want combat to be affected by this. Are we going to spend plenty of time exploring and combat will be ocasional? Then going with the slow health regen by eating food (and maybe using bandages for quick short healing with a cooldown) would be great, since players should try to find safe spots to rest and plan accordingly to what they could find in the seas. Are players going to be fighting constantly? Then having to wait a minute between fights to regen health might be a bit tedious and slow paced. In the end, it depends on your vision of the game

I want PvP to be a core part of the game, and I'll definitely be doing my best to encourage it (as organically as possible). But you're definitely right-if the regen is too slow it'll get in the way of combat...instant healing just seems so generic/mundane/over-used :/

@@457Deniz457 well the Minecraft way isn't good for PvP, at least not without an equivalent for splash potions of healing and golden apples. Even if you can heal instantly, both players can do so, so it's really just lengthening the fight, which I think is necessary. I play Sea of Thieves, and even with food that heals you instantly, fights can be over _very_ fast. Getting killed in a few seconds makes it really hard to learn from your mistakes, so some way to recover mid-fight is vital, especially because without it, getting ambushed basically means you're screwed...

I just watching your networking tutorials for multiplyer but i cant see anycode properly and found that later videos are good so can you upload atlest first 3 videos again so we can read and understood code properly.

Sorry, but I'm not reediting and reuploading the first 3 videos. That's a lot of work, and more importantly it would reset the search rankings for those videos. Is there a problem with watching them in full-screen or something?

I like the combat system, its complicated, but easy enough to understand, and its something you can get good at easily, like 1.8 MC pvp. *unban me* But seriously nice work
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest, I'm not satisfied with how the situation went during which you got banned, however I do mostly agree with the end result. You were consistently being disrespectful and getting on people's nerves, and it had to stop. Again, I'm sorry for _how_ it happened, but hopefully you can learn from this :/

Skip the take more fall damage when injured. It's a very unintuitive mechanic and would be quite frustrating.

I'm not sure-I feel like it's a very interesting mechanic that would add nicely to the survival aspect of the game. I'm guessing that once balanced it would be relatively subtle...
