First love the hat. Second, I've also seen images of duels that involve a spear sword and buckler that operate similarly to this but add a buckler to the sword hand. I'm not sure how common this was though.

The rules of Judicial Duels are many and varied. I'd love to know the statistics myself. Even who is allowed to attack first changes from place to place. Sometimes it's the Plaintiff who makes the first strike as proof of their commitment to kill for their complaint, other times it's the Defendant who has the right to defend themselves first. There's a lot of symbolism wrapped up in how these are conducted, so I wouldn't be surprised if the presence of small shields served an additional function to that end.

Another wonky looking method of fighting with a spear is one I was taught while training in 16th century Bolognese. You have a rotella shield I'm your off arm but also use a spear with both hands. The actual use of the spear is essentially the same other than accounting for the shield. You need to be careful for the type of shield used though because any that don't feel right when used this way become more of a burden than an asset. It wasn't a super fun way to fight it was kind of annoying lol

Keep in mind that judicial duels are not necessarily using rational weapon choices. There are judicial dueling manuals for a lot of things nobody would intentionally pick as a weapon.

This is one of two practical asymmetrical dual wielding sets i've found in the souls series, most spear move sets are one move at multiple strengths, offhand weapons only buys you one new move and a fast sweeping slash gives you crowd control that the spear lacks.
