Half way through the Sworks SL8 build, some snags, some tuning, some delays....aiming for as light as possible!

Had a mini-epiphany on another key advantage of good quality non-padded carbon saddles: there's no fabric to degrade, declour, and/or 'de-shape'! Those £300 outlays all of a sudden have decent value if they give 20 years worth of top performance... or so I tell the wife!

Exactly! And I tend to think that a smooth, slippery saddle is sapping less energy as your legs move across it. Any kind of grippyness seems pointless to me and would increase wear on your shorts. And as for longevity, well, in theory they last forever....family heirloom?!

Did you find a lower weight alternitive ,for the sl8 compression plug, that somehow is safe? I cant stand the weight of the original one
@CyclespeedTours3 ай бұрын
I cut most of the black cylinder off mine. If your stem is low then that part is literally doing nothing useful. They have to make it to accommodate those that use 40mm of spacers. Seems many are using lightweight ones from THM, etc. just fine anyway.

When / if you do the machining for the compression ring so that it sits flat, I'm sure me and many others would LOVE to see the results. I just got an SL8 fully knowing this issue but it still bothers me quite a bit...

Are the RTP frames finish fairly 'durable' as they are ie. no extra paint job?
@CyclespeedTours2 ай бұрын
Probably more durable because there is no paint to chip or scratch.

Same issue here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9xyqpum0cycpp8.htmlfeature=shared. Also: 1) lose the spacers behind the bottle cage. It doesn’t work. It’s a complete bullshit piece. 2) put some extra lock on the Garmin holder. The bolt is too short. 3) I’m replacing my bearing next week. The 1.5mm is for “compliance tolerance”- rider care “specialist”. I’m putting ceramic to avoid rusting. They come with special seal. 4) There is handlebar shortage because of the sl7 owners, trying to make their sl7 a sl8. 5) I wish you luck installing the seat post… positioning of cables will affect dropping the saddle in. But I think on 52 it comes with 300mm so that would be easier. I highly, highly recommend you put 0 seat post roval saddle. It’s lighter and helps significantly when you climb and when on aero position. Darimo seat post looks ugly on sl7, I haven’t seen it how it looks on sl8. The sl7 one doesn’t fit sl8. Best of luck with the build.

OK glad it wasn't just me that lost that FD backing plate! 1. Not sure what you mean? I just put on one cage with 2 screws in the lower position on the down tube. 2. Yeah, the bolt is pretty short. I'm not sure if there is an alu insert there, or if the bolt just bites into the carbon? 3. Yeah, not cool really. Even though I very rarely ride in the rain, I will have to be careful just washing the bike. 4. Very true. 5. I planned 10 minutes, it took me 90..! But yes, shorter seatpost makes it slightly easier. You mean put a Roval saddle? My AX is only 70g....? Not sure the Darimo saves enough weight to justify 400 Euros. I think I can trim 10-20g off the Spesh one without too much trouble, then it would be 124 - 134. First decent ride today, very smooth and agile. Fast!

Check out my Ostro build in earlier videos, that is just below 6kg. This SL8 comes in at 5.9kg now, but it needs tuning down to 5.75. Mostly due to 960g wheels.

Get someone smart to re-design the mentioned top cap and 3D printed, so the gap would be covered by extra material, since you have original part it would be much easier.

@MS-bw7yt4 ай бұрын
Wow, this will be a light bike. Saving 0.5kg on the Ostro? On a 5km long climb with 10% at 300 watts this will save roughly 10 seconds when doing the math. I mean that's the equivalent of 2 or 3 watts? Man, you will get all the KOM's!
@CyclespeedTours4 ай бұрын
Saving 250g on the Ostro V1, and 400 on the V2. I'm getting older every year, so I need all the help I can get, more for PRs these days than KOMs!
@MS-bw7yt4 ай бұрын
@@CyclespeedTours So when you need all the help you can get, Ostro V2 with >60mm deep rims and fast tubeless tyres would be the obvious choice :P . Unless you are doing exclusively hill climp events on super steep roads, aero will always be faster. Or does gravity work differently on Mallorca :P.
@CyclespeedTours4 ай бұрын
@@MS-bw7yt On my rides here, I'm almost always either climbing or descending. The old aero versus weight debate on climbs depends very much on your speed. Pros can climb 7% at 25kmh plus, so aero plays a bigger part. I'm below 20kmh, so aero is less a factor. And even then the pros are choosing the light bike, not the aero one. (eg. R5 over S5). Why is that? Possibly because those lighter bikes react quicker, climb better, maybe also descend better. If I swap my 430g Extralite front tub with the Decadence 650g one I feel an instant reduction in reactivity and manoueverability. I may yet buy a V2 if I can sell my V1 and set it up full aero. On the rare occasions that I ride flatish (no Mallorca ride is truly flat) I can use that.

When you preload it i'm pretty shure that it will seat much better
@CyclespeedTours4 ай бұрын
Don't think much will change because the top bearing already pushes against the compression ring which is very hard plastic. Nothing can compress there. If you look at built up SL8's they all have this gap. Supposedly to stop the top cover rubbing the paint off the frame....?!
