I loved this mission and how much it called back to World at War. Those who played Black Ops without playing World at War really missed out on the significance of this mission. It's great how they even used the music from that game. I wondered after completing WaW what would've happened to Resnov and Dimitri, and if they truly would have made it home after all they'd done. Having Black Ops answer this in a truly sad yet powerful way was for me one of the highlights of this game, and why for me this is one of the best Call of Duties.

"My father was a musician in Stalingrad. During the German occupation, the sound of his violin filled the air with magnificent music - Korsakov, Stasov - many of the great nationalist composers. To my countrymen, it was a symbol of hope. To the Germans, it was a symbol of defiance. Even now, his music still haunts me. The Nazis slit his throat while he slept. Collaborating with any Nazi is a betrayal, a betrayal against all of Mother Russia. Dragovich and Kravchenko were not troubled by such matters. They looked only to advance towards their own interests and agendas..." "The men and I had fought through the most bitter of winters on the Eastern Front - We were no strangers to the cold... Even now, the blood in my veins chills when I think back to the events of that day... Far, far from home..." "As long as Mother Russia has enemies, I will answer her call..." "When the German occupation began, he and his lap dog Kravchenko left my men and I hopelessly outnumbered... Promises of reinforcements were made. Made... But not kept. Dragovich and Kravchenko are oppurtunists... Manipulators... They are not to be trusted, Dimitri." "Dimitri Petrenko was one of the bravest men I had ever known. He fought by my side from the siege of Stalingrad to the fall of Berlin. The wounds he sustained ensuring our victory should have earned him a hero's welcome to Russia... But Stalin had little need for heroes." "We have found what we're looking for... Nova 6. The German weapon of mass destruction now belong to Mother Russia. Or so it seemed. Our victory was to be short lived. Dragovich wanted to see the effects of the poison first hand. It was also a opportunity to remove a thorn in his side. I had long known of their distrust. What kind of men they were. It was a betrayal I should have forseen." "Dimitri Petrenko was a hero... He deserved a hero's death. Instead of giving his life for the glory of the motherland, he died for nothing... like an animal. He should have died in Berlin..." "As I watched my closest friend die, it became clear we were not the only one's seeking the German weapon. The Western allies circled like vultures... Of course, Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner scattered like rats - leaving me to contend with the British." "Mason listen to me. We are running of the time my friend...Can you trust your leaders to destroy it... or you think they will use it? The flag may be different but the methods are the same. They will use you, as they used me...You must decide... decide what do you think is worth fighting for... Dragovich... Kravchenko... Steiner... These... 'men' ... must die."

Such a big spit into what COD WAW did. Stalin was not about rainbows and puppies, but he was a leader who tried to achieve great results to USSR. Many sh*t happend during Stalin, but with him the agrarian country turned into a power who broke the bones out of Third Reich and make the population smarter. He supported free medicine that US can't dream of. What a big hipocricy to say thing, when Churchill did the hunger in British India and USA didn't gave a sh*t about Nazis untill Japaneese attacked Pearl Harbour.

No at all. It’s a great way to show how strong an ideology can be both in its conception and in its stability, how once an ideology, such as Facism, grows to such a point in human history it won’t ever die. It lives on in other humans, the texts of history, and the graves made from and of Facist occupants. It’s powerful, just as the Steiner’s line is.

Cool detail I possibly noticed at the end of the cutscene: Whenever you play as mason or Hudson, the end of the beginning cutscene will have a picture of one of them on a bright clear background that also might be documents zoomed in on to see the picture. However when reznov is the playable character in project nova. Once we see reznov it’s a very dark lighting, and the numbers are all over his face. And flashes of reznovs skeleton or the outline of it. Suggesting that you could possibly find out reznov was dead before you play rebirth.

I miss this kind of story-teller, the one that actually makes you chill to the bone only from thinking about it. FPS genre has come a long way, but there has been very few games where you gotta sit down, listen and try to understand why we have to kill, not just what, when and where. You know, even for Black Ops 2, a game in general, was very unique and fresh at the time, didn't touch a single bit of Black Ops 1 story-telling aspect. You couldn't feel the intense at all when Mike Harper said "Still got mah ball, let's go". Not just Black ops 2, all later futuristic Cod lack of serious, impactful dialogue which kinda added to the ruination of the story-telling aspect. I'm from Vietnam, kind of a dialogue reader and i love Black Ops 1, World At War and Call of Duty 4 for that. Most speech, talks coming from characters like Cpt. Price, Viktor Reznov, Overlord, Shepherd give you very strong impression of the intension of the battlefield. As other people said "the game is playable but the characters are forgettable"

Fun Fact: the British commandos in Black Ops were actually cut assets from CoD: WaW. Originally, there was a British campaign planned for WaW taking place in the Winter of 1944. Some of the assets were made, but it was cut before release. The Sten gun you can pick up in game is what it would’ve looked like in World at War.

@@Skyline_r3496 they are only similar in overall form factor and functionality. The Sten is a much more bare bones design with firing in 9mm Parabellum. Type 100s were incredibly rare firearms in WWII. They are also only fully automatic (Stens have a semi auto selector) and fire in 8mm Nambu. On the American collector’s market, Stens are the cheapest transferrable machine gun anyone can buy ($6,000-7,000 for a MKII). Type 100s are extraordinarily rare and go for an insane amount of money. Also, good luck finding magazines for the gun, which are about as rare as the guns themselves.

I just gotta say, if they remake World at War with more or less the same story, I really hope Dimitri gets his face and voice added. Frankly, Dimitri and Reznov have some of the best interactions of the franchise and even though it's just for one mission we learn so much about Dimitri's personality and the bond between the two. Dimitri seems to be an introvert and shy outside of being a soldier since he glances at Reznov and turns away when he wants to ask him something but feels awkward doing so but trusts Reznov enough to muster up to ask it. The way the two always seem to look out for eachother is great. Like how Reznov warns Dimitri about Dragovich and Kravchenko or Dimitri gently telling Reznov to stay with him (and Reznov gently telling Dimitri to get ready). The two just want to go home after fighting in World War 2 as brothers but never made it back. They were betrayed and Reznov screaming while reaching out for Dimitri as they were separated is gut wrenching. Even as Dimitri was dying, aside from getting out, the first thing on his mind was getting to Reznov. Dimitri was given an impressive ammount of character than even in the still shots of him and Reznov speak volumes of their dynamic. I really hope we get more interactions of them in the future.
