I hate that all of my near by trails are based around metro parks with strick closing times and no night riding permitted. Bought an off road atv led light and fabricated a bar mount and rigged up a Milwaukee M12 flashlight to power it from my bottle cage, before I realized it was restricted here...

Night rides are also a great way to learn how to corner better. Using a bar mounted light and a helmet mounted light is very... illuminating. If you don't turn your head into the corner and put your eyes (light) where you want to go you can't see anything.

Yes it makes it more fun because I push my speed more dangerously higher than I normally would because I'm scared. I know there aren't really monsters hiding about to kill me but my brain won't listen.

I try this every once in a while with my rigid single speed - things that are just couch surfing on my trail bike are way more challenging and interesting when I have to keep the momentum going to support the single speed and don't have the cushion of full suspension. Underbiking will definitely spice up your life.
@WillKalman

I do this occasionally on my circa 1991 Park Pre Hammer (full rigid) MTB on technical trails. It freaks people out, but it's the bike I was riding on those trails almost 30 years ago! And it really makes you ride different - much more of a mental game picking lines because you can't bash over everything.

I dig your channel. I liked the everesting video. I sometimes ride with some old pro roadies and we've done Everesting rides at Henry Coe state park in Wackofornia. Underbiking rules! It makes routine rides and trails so much more fun and challenging. I like to do lots of my regular loops in both directions for the variety too. On the right bike, I enjoy super technical rocky climbs that most riders would just descend. Since I started riding dirt roads and trails on steel road bikes back in the '70s before mtb hardly existed, underbiking stuff is pretty routine for me. I eventually progressed to rigid MTBs, hardtails and then full suspension. All the tech is cool, but its more complex, expensive and allows this old man to go much faster than a responsible family guy should! Underbiking keeps me honest and pretty safe! For the last 10 years my most used bikes are singlespeeds but especially an old steel fixed gear 'cross bike. Fixed offroad is more fun than should be legal! Especially on technical trails! Its a wicked workout and simply never breaks. Traction control and Controlling speed and momentum with legs are really cool. Its a real good way to flow and maintain momentum. Inertia from the drivetrain in motion is something I never would have expected, especially on tough climbs. Pedaling always is a great way to stay warm when it's cold and all thru the winter. Its actually quite efficient mechanically and you get out what you put into it. It requires very little maintenance and endures incredible abuse and neglect. I still ride my much more expensive MTBs and bike packer, but they're saved for the epic big mountain rides.

When on the top of the hill I will never forget the looks of the guys with the Lyriks, the Foxes and the DT Swiss forks staring at me like an alien! I enjoyed it a lot and I suffered a lot as I have only swapped my 10-25 105 short cage Shimano for a 10-18 short cage Shimano.....but...Yeahhhh I enjoyed it! Repeating this with my Canyon Neuron and 10/51 Shimano 8100 was half the effort

@@rollinrat4850 wow, fixed! I want to try this but I'm afraid of bigger-rock tech sections and basically pedal strike. What gear ratio are you running?
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 3 жыл бұрын
@@raffitchakmakjian I use a 'dinglespeed' set up. It has 4 gears, fixed and free. Gears are changed by moving the chain or flipping the wheel. My gears are 40x17 for my cruising gear, and 36x21 is the climbing gear both fixed. Way back in the day, I used 42x21 on a road race bike so this is barely low enough of a gear. I only use the freewheel for really long fast descents or if Im worn out. Same chainrings but 16 and 19 teeth. Surly makes the double fixed cog and White Industries makes the double freewheel. My frame is an old steel 'cross bike with a pretty high bottom bracket. I don't strike pedals much and it's not a big deal when it happens. Sometimes you can stand on the pedal as it contact and teeter or pivot the bike forward. For the biggest rocks and logs I might skid up to them to set up the pedals or hop around a bit trials style. You definately don't want to break your toes! I keep both hands on the brakes thru rougher sections and I can always clip out pretty quick. It just takes practice and working up to the bigger obstacles. You don't want to start out on very technical trail unless you've ridden fixed for awhile. The really cool part is having so much control over traction, momentum and speed just using your feet. You'll learn to ride much smoother, pick better lines and maintain speed better. The fitness benefits of 'pedaling always' are unbelievable until you try it out. You gain stamina, explosive power, pedaling skill and use muscles you never knew you had! You'll learn to pedal efficiently grindingly slow and blindingly fast. After awhile you forget about coasting

Honestly, that what I had so that's what I put on. If I'd had 2 38c tires I would have run that, but since one was smaller, I put it on the back because that's the standard for MTB and CX. The idea being that you want more traction on the front for cornering.

Hey Macky! Could you explain why you put the narrow tire in the rear and the wide one in the front? I am pretty confused.
@sydandmacky
@sydandmacky 4 жыл бұрын
That's the standard with mountain bikes and CX because you want more traction on the front for cornering. It sounds like the standard on the road is the opposite -- wider on the rear if there is a difference (although usually they're the same).

Can't the RLT 9 fit 50mm tires? Why not go something a bit wider for more comfort? Like a 45mm WTB or Pirelli tire?

I know im super late but thats insane. I live in my van with my 2 bikes and my dog, when I was in Taos last month I was bored of my full suspension. I hopped on my gravel bike to have some fun and rode a local trail. Here a month later I lookup a gravel bike video and see the same trail I rode a month ago on my gravel bike.

Is it the bar tape that makes the bars so thick or are the bars so thick themselves? If bar tape, which make / type is it?
@sydandmacky

I don't think it's especially thick. It's just something I found on Amazon because I needed orange!

Fizik that I found on Amazon. Not especially thick, mostly got it for the color 😁

Also, have heard of going with a smaller width tire on the rear on mtb but does it make much difference on gravel/road? I was planning to use 38c front and rear for gravel and 32c on road for my gravel/road bike, when it arrives.
@sydandmacky
@sydandmacky 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, generally on the road people run the same front/rear but wider front for CX and MTB.
@DEXVD

@@sydandmacky Yeah not very well versed in CX or gravel bike set up. So will people run like a 33c in front for CX and a 30c in the rear? For gravel a 40c in the front and like a 35c in the rear?
@sydandmacky
@sydandmacky 4 жыл бұрын
I probably should have said "if you're going to ride different size tires, people run the bigger ones on the front for MTB and CX." Usually I think people run the same size but since that's what I had, I put the bigger on the front. 😁
