For christians forgiveness is not optional. God makes it very clear that if we dont forgive others their sins then he wont forgive us our sins, and the eternal consequences for unforgiveness are extremely severe. Forgiveness is a state of the heart, it doesnt mean the criminal wont have to face the full force of justice.
