Exactly.. they say Harvey Keitel was the first choice for Zeigler but he got mad at kubrick and said Kubrick insulted him with so many takes.. but man Sydney made that movie real.. Tom not much of actor but hes believeable and for Sydney and other great performances from Vanessa Shaw, Nicole Kidman, Rade Serbedzija, Todd Feild and great cinematography the film is a master piece..

Sydney Pollack is hilarious in Tootsie! And to think he didn't want to act in the movie. His scenes are the funniest! He's just a cool guy. He was funny on Will & Grace, too!! Actual smart, funny writing. Some of it; the cheap, easy jokes are so tired. But, the other stuff is brilliantly written.

Sydney was great in Michael Clayton. Sadly, he died shortly after.

Me too and this moron in interview didn't even mention it !! If you like Sidney Pollack movies I recomend you to watch 'Electric Horseman' from 1979., Jeremiah Johnson from 1972., Tootsie 1982., great movies.

@@overtaxed3628 i don't know why, but it's highly underrated. It's a great film on so many levels - the script, the acting, the atmosphere. I often tell people he got phenomenal performances out of the bit and character actors in that film. I mean, the guy who played Wicks put on a FANTASTIC performance. And there were some challenges in the script that are amazingly overcome. For example, making the romance between Condor and Kathy believable. Did you notice that Spielberg embarrassingly and brazenly stole from Condor in his film "Munich". My second-favorite Pollack film is even more underrated than Condor --- "Bobby Deerfield". I've never met anyone else who has seen it, and I loved it. The older I get I do see that it is a little too sentimental, but just a little.

@@HomeAtLast501 I agreed with you completely and 'Bobby Deerfield', I have it on DVD . Yeah great movie with young Al Pacino and Marthe Keller (I love her in Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman) . But strange thing about Bobby Deerfield is Alfa Romeo propaganda, I found it very unusual for movies from that era. Sad fact is that so many 70's movies are so underrated and I suspect even why: younger people these days are just so obsessed with new things, anything before 21 st century is like disease they try to avoid, such a shame because I believe movies nowadays are garbage in 95% of cases.

I must say that I have so many movies I could watch many times and all of them are from 70's : Scarecrow 1973. Duel 1971. Kramer vs Kramer 1979. China Syndrome 1979. Getaway 1972. Network 1976. Annie Hall 1977. Five Easy Pieces 1970. French Connection 1971. Straight Time 1978. with Dustin Hoffman (this is probably the most underrated movie from 70's along with 3 Days of The Condor ) .

@@overtaxed3628 Marathon Man also is a favorite of mine. I like those '70s suspense films set in NYC during the cold months --- Condor, Marathon Man, French Connection, Shaft. I first saw Deerfield probably in the late '90s. I got it on DVD too. Pacino said it was the film he did that most closely resembled what he was going through in his personal life at the time. I love that scene when he's jogging and stops to "be with" the old man with the flowers. I also love that scene toward the end where Keller is ill, and he's staying with her in her apartment, and he's bringing the groceries back and he suddenly stops and is just taken with that statue/fountain. They captured the character's awakening and emotional thawing so effectively with that scene --- he's reconnecting with his inner self, and as that process progresses he is becoming sensitive to art. Shots of Lake Como are fantastic, plus the fun drive they take through the countryside. Here is a great point of comparison in terms of just how superior I feel Condor is. Walter McGinn plays Condor's friend Sam in the Condor film, and he plays Pacino's brother in Deerfield. I felt that his performance in Condor was magnitudes better --- I did not feel that he was completely believable in Deefield. And that was PARTLY due to a weakness in the script. The dialogue they wrote for him in Deerfield is weak. He talks about their mother living with him and "wrapping stuff" around her legs --- he says it as though he has no idea what the stuff is, and why she's doing it. He also talks about how "things are going to be left to him", but he doesn't seem to know what besides the "piece of land". It's weak, IMO. But his performance is stellar in Condor. I just feel that Pollack and Redford and the team were firing on all cylinders in that film --- the stars were aligned.

Agreed. That's one of Redford's...and Pollack's, most underrated films.

Just going on vague memory but I remember both the book and film being fascinating but both also with a somewhat unsatisfying ending.

@@alexalex13131 the problem with the book version of 'the firm' is NO one can record themselves, even as they go over papers, with the intent for evidence. a Court of law would demand the defendants being able to cross exam the testimony. the ending of the movie is acceptable. 10yrs and $10,000 fine, for each partner. since i read the book, i have only read John G's books once. I buy and read all of them, but have never cared to re read his work. I have watched 'the firm' more times than i can remember, as well as have watched all of the movies made from John G's work. including the straight to dvd movies. 'christmas with the kranks' is one of the better movies. the Tv series 'the firm' is ok, but was cancelled prematurely before all the eps could be shown. at least the whole series was filmed (rare to do that) before the show was aired and then cancelled within 3 eps. i miss S P. he was awesome as a director, producer and as a supporting actor. RIP S P
