Come along with us as we look at the new Victoria Cross Metro Station in North Sydney, Australia during its first public open day.
Victoria Cross is a future underground automated rapid transit station, located beneath the central business district of North Sydney, Australia. The station forms part of Transport for NSW's Sydney Metro City & Southwest scheme. It is scheduled to open in 2024.
Sydney is coming into the modern age with this station. It is fantastic.

Please continue with the well-presented, concise format. It’s needed in a niche that is well served by offerings expecting a significant sacrifice of time on the part of the viewer.

I went to the Metro Open day too. I’m never gonna think of North Sydney station the same again! Victoria Cross is a very capacious station and is very clearly designed for the future in mind. There won’t be issues with overcrowding for a long time. Thank you for making this video! You’ve just gotten your 76th subscriber!

@@BackTracks.SideTracked To be fair North Sydney station was originally an open-air station cut into the sandstone with a 30s-style building and some weather protection, it was only later in the 70s-80s that it got OSDs and became the current dark dingy station it is now with poor air quality.

I visited this station during the open day and it is absolutely huge. It really feels like they were trying to create a “grand central station” for North Sydney, and I think they succeeded! It’s spacious and stylish, a total contrast to the existing North Sydney train station

The screen above the escalators is a "sundial". Over 700 hours of video from Balls Head and other areas of bushland. There are Roman numerals above the screen, with the sun or moon position showing the time. Cheers

Thanks. Good to know. Yes didn't realise that at the time during the visit nor when making the video. Only realised when I watched another video on the station. Then I went back and looked at the film and it should have been quite obvious to me.

The beautiful artwork above the escalators is a sundial, so hopefully it won't be replaced by advertising. Well, not an actual sundial, but an electronic clock in sundial form I assume. Otherwise it wouldn't work on cloudy days.

Sundial or not, it is a screen controlled by a computer… ergo: it will become advertising.
@daveg2104
@daveg2104 5 ай бұрын
@@haemolysis Maybe they will alternate between "sundial mode" and advertising. I could definitely see them doing that. Making it an advertising screen only would defeat the purpose of the numbers around the top of the screen though. And when it becomes time for a station upgrade (eventually), who knows what will happen.

@@daveg2104 maybe, but NSW gov has a history of telling us these things will be for art installations and then later they become 24/7 advertisements: take “Wynyard walk” for example, which is now “westpac walk” - all ads. It is just a matter of time.

The station looks great with good lighting, too. However, it's a little sterile. Hopefully, they'll add some artwork before they open it. It's very spacious so adding artwork shouldn't be an issue. Congrats!

The new Metro station at Waterloo is prettier I think (open day last year). There is some beautiful subtle Aboriginal artwork on the wall as you ride down the escalator and a large projection on the wall at platform level. I wonder if Vic Cross will have anything similar? Edit: just got to the part with the electronic billboard. Will be interesting to see what it’s used for!

Australia need to establish a culture where people dont own a car like Asia , Europe and south America. it doesnt matter how many tunnels and road government going to build , it can never solve the traffic problem if you cant get them out of the car. The first step will be free public transport for student and old people. Young kid growing up got use of catching public transport and old people get out of their loneliness and home do exercise and keep their mind active. what so hard about these problems? government talk about cost but what about billion of dollar for road year after years? that okay, and everybody become blind cant see it anymore.

Is it disability/aged friendly. I'm now aged since I worked at North Sydney & don't think I could walk that far to the train. Or does it just seem longer than it is? Nice to catch up on Sydney changes for the next time I go back. Thank you.

Thanks. And good question. I would believe the Metro website would give all the details. But from what I saw it was step free from street to train. And if you take the lifts there seemed to be less walking. But agree. it is much more of a walk from entrance to platform than we are used to on Sydney railway stations.

Equivalent Elizabeth Line for Sydney would run North-South, not East-West like London's Eliz line, because east-west in Sydney lands you in the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is crying out for North-South lines: Hurstville-Strathfield, Kogarah-Parramatta, Menai-Sydney Olympic Park-Castle Hill... anything will do, but still... nothing

The most recent one I visited was Covent Garden in London on a busy pre Christmas weekend. And yes the lifts were packed. I just looked it up on line and apparently there are over 20 stations in London with only Lifts (no escalators) - but I would have guess all of them have (a lot of) stairs.

This posh new Train Station is a show piece. Looks like there are just heaps of low paid jobs and workers queuing and waiting to serve the rich to that end of town but no transport to get there from the Western suburbs. A bit weird really. The rest of Sydney awaits indefinitely for a decent transport system. You better hurry up Sydney there are big gaps. No one including plumbers or other estential workers want to travel to those areas either by train bus or car. There is no parking, no way home and roads too expensive to make it worth your while to go there. Also think about the Home and Community Care Services provided to those areas currently. Grandma wants to go shopping? Too expensive for the Care Worker who is left out of pocket. Who would want to go to these privileged areas? Having money doesn’t buy you everything even with a posh train station. Now we know why the rest of Sydney was found wanting. They just spent every penny on this futuristic train station in an area that probably least needed it.

It gets praise because it will change the way people move around the city and unlock capacity for the exisiting train lines. What’s a few months delay and cost blowout for a piece of infrastructure that will serve the city for the next 100+ years?
