We have 2 types of the CAF Civity. Class 195 DMU & Class 331 EMU. From my personal experience of travelling on ours here in the UK, they're fantastic. Sure, they all have teething issues, but they are a mahoooooosive step up to the current fleet of 1980s family of Class 15x sprinter DMUs and our Class 317, 318, 319, 320, 323, 333 EMUs. So despite the initial concerns, I'm sure the Civities will be a great edition to the NSW network

Just an FYI - There will be 10 6-car sets for the XPT replacement, 9 3-car sets for XPL replacement, and 10 3-car sets for the Endeavour replacement. The RailColor news article is behind a paywall.

Looking forward to using these new trains, however our lines won't handle faster times. Would have loved to see a business/first class with full recliners like I've used on Amtrak in the States. I travel quite often from Taree to Gloucester and Newcastle, and I'd gladly pay more for the comfortable journey.

Without significant investment in the form of projects along the lines to Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne, the travel times probably won't change much. However, a focus on night sleeper trains with many sleeper cars would be a great way to promote and initiate the transition to higher speed rail in the future.

The word is … a junket of managers and other assorted persons from NSWtrains went over to Spain to inspect the first new cars ( those in that pic ) and gave CAF a list of things to change/modify and then returned to Australia. That was over 6 months ago. Maybe those changes and modifications have been finally done, thus taa daa ! New train appears.

Hi Phil, interesting about the new trains. Once running, we should see them arriving in Melbourne. Incidentally, I notice that you catch the Newcastle train to travel to Epping. I have no memory of the old Newcastle Flyer train ever stopping at Epping back prior to 1981. The main Sydney stops were Burwood, Strathfield and Hornsby. One thing that I would like to see would be a full daylight train service between Sydney and Brisbane, like they have between Sydney and Melbourne via the XPT and even Melbourne and Adelaide via the Overland. Anyway, all the very best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

This route isn't the same as the Newcastle one, Newcastle station was closed permanently and relocated to Wickham as the name of Newcastle Interchange. They aren't the same station - this one now stops at Central, Strathfield, Epping, Hornsby etc. all the way to Hamilton followed by Newcastle Interchange. The former Newcastle line is now a light rail.

Phil, do you think the Mariyung NIF D Sets will officially enter service this year? I've seen a lot of them stabled at Lithgow and other places and they'll not brand spanking new when they start proper service. (Sadly, they will see the end of the V Sets.) It's very interesting to see what the new Spanish-built trains that will be replacing the XPTs, Xplorers and Endeavours look like. To ask an obvious question, why are we building new trains overseas as opposed to here in Australia? Also, did you know that this year, new C44aci model locomotives (the 94 Class) will be introduced to displace the NRs as the motive power for Pacific National's superfreighters?

@@sydneytrainsvlogs Taitset recently said in an RM transit video that until HSR is achieved between Sydney and Melbourne, he would like to see improvements to sleeper service. I agree, as its 11 hours long. Perfect for hopping on at Sydney, having dinner onboard, getting a long enough sleep and waking up having brekkie and a coffee as you arrive into Melbourne the following morning. Not only will it be cheap and encourage more intercity train travel but I think it will do business travellers well, as they won't have to get up early in the morning for a 6 o'clock flight to Melbourne for a meeting or vice versa. HSR would be nice but even just an entire dedicated sleeper train between Sydney and Melbourne and even up to Brisbane & also between Melbourne & Adelaide. I would definitely take it considering how crazy air fares are. And if we ever get HSR, this sleeper service could still complement it as a service. They do have the great southern and overland doing those routes but those trains are more for tourists, where as these would be more aimed at intercity regional travel as well as air travellers and in some cases Business travellers. As this would be an interstate system, I think a Federal owned rail company should be set up to run these sleeper trains (and later, HSR) with contracts to collaborate with the state owned railways in their respective states like supplying maitainence, rollingstock, staff etc. I also think there should be reserved carriages and some unreserved for people who show up without booking (those without booking will have to arrive very early to secure a spot but those with reservation can check in 10 minutes before departure). Hopefully one day we get proper HSR, but until then, go intercity sleeper train.

@sydneytrainsvlogs I agree. In fact to me, the biggest screw up is the timetable of November 2017. It removes a lot of express services and removes a lot of aspects that are supposed to be a regular thing (such as stations between Parramatta and Lidcombe as well as Burwood all having Western Line services on a regular basis). I hate what the previous Government did by adding the unnecessary T2 Parramatta and removing lots of fast trains for Harris Park, Granville, Clyde, Auburn, Lidcombe and Burwood. I also hate how there are no trains on the Sector 2 T2 passing through Burwood on Platforms 5 and 6. It makes my trip from Cabramatta to Central slower and more packed. I hope they remove Burwood from limited stops T2 services and reinstate Burwood on the T1 Western line for faster trains to Central on the T1 Western and T9 Northern lines of Sector 3. Now the network is in one heck of a mess thanks to all the maintenance backlog. Glad the new Sydney Trains timetable will be introduced in the middle of this year along with the new metro line between Chatswood and Sydenham following a year of the Sydney Rail Repair Plan.

These trains are so disappointing. The model isn't suited to the 12 hour trips and no sleeper class when we are seeing the sleeper comeback in Europe (these 12 hour night trips would be perfect for a night train). Note: I don't blame the manufacturer for the train issues, I blame TfNSW they always stuff up the procurement by over customising off the shelf models to be used not how they were designed.

The problem with that would be the lines. They would be fine for the long distance like Sydney to Brisbane but the smaller lines like the South Coast and Hunter wouldnt be able to have the long trains on them. Most of the stations couldnt be upgraded to handle the long trains due to the area that the stations are and the heritage listing. Not only that, I dont think it would be worth paying for that for the Kiama to Bomaderry.
