I read once that if you did a poll to vote for the top rock musicians to make up a super group you’d get Vocals- Robert Plant Guitar- Jimi Page Drums- John Bonham Bass- JPJ YOU CAUGHT IT!!!!!! I’m not British but I know that a “bird” is a reference for a girl or woman. Most other reactors totally miss this. Obviously you being British caught it right away!!!! Yes Robert Plant has massive sex appeal. If you want to see him at his swaggiest check out their concert at MSG.

It goes from John Paul Jones playing the organ to Robert Plant playing the harmonica to Jimmy Page playing guitar. After Robert Plants says "All Right' at the end of the harmonica part, the next sound is Jimmy Page coming in on guitar. I don't know how you can't tell the difference between the sounds.

The harmonica blends rather seamlessly into the guitar, that's why. When I was a brand new LZ fan as a young kid, I also had a bit of a hard time figuring out exactly when the guitar came in.

Syed….great analysis as usual. You are one of the most intelligent and respectful to the music reactors out there right now IMO. I want to flag something you said because it hit me right between the eyes you said that young people today really don’t care about instruments, or instrumental solos. What that says to me is that young people don’t appreciate the talent or skills of musicians any longer. That also rings true in the sense that people think today that music should be free. You get what you pay for. Record companies will no longer pay to develop the talents of new artists. They just pay tens of millions for older artists catalogues. This makes me incredibly sad. One of the first things that humans did, and it is a uniquely human thing, was to create instruments to make sound. It is part of our human DNA. Live music has been with us for thousands of years, and now, we have a generation who doesn’t care about about all the beautiful sounds that skilled and dedicated musicians can create. Music was a touchstone of my generation. If was an important part of the tapestry of our youth, woven all through the youth culture. To have it discarded and dismissed as not being of value just depresses the hell out of me.
@SyedRewinds
@SyedRewinds 2 жыл бұрын
Helene this is a good point about it being a part of human nature. but, the way I see it, things are cyclical. Its not in vogue to be a instrumental musician at the moment. But, it will take a few talented people doing it in some new way, to start a trend. If that trend stems and sparks a new genre of music, like how hip hop started, it would catch on. Causing kids to pick up instruments again. I think we should encourage more kids to play instruments in school too, would delicately help the cause

@@SyedRewinds yes, I agree. Part of the issue, in addition to the fact that music is now ruled by business people, not lovers of music (this was not always the case. Ahmet Ertegun for example, a co-founder and head of Atlantic Records, was passionate about music and about the artists he signed. Led Zeppelin was the first rock group to be signed to Atlantic, and Ertegun cultivated close ties and friendships with artists, including Zep. Now, music is run by beancounters ruled by the bottom line. Music is secondary) is that when schools today have to cut corners, one of the first things sacrificed are the arts. When I was a kid, music was taught in elementary school, and there were always school bands, with instruments provided by the school. Many members of bands from the 60’s and 70’s first were exposed to music in school. From what I understand, this is often no longer the case.and so kids grow up without exposure to instruments and music appreciation.

Huge difference between sampling and doing a cover. None of Zep's covers sound remotely like the originals, and Zeppelin plays all the instruments. Page makes them all his own, as Hendrix did with Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. In terms of the instruments here, the first solo is JPJ on the organ, the second is Plant on harmonica, and the third is Page on his Telecaster through a small Supro amp. Something to keep in mind here. At the time of this recording, Robert Plant and John Bonham were only nineteen freaking years old. Plant was already that good on harmonica, and that ballsy and developed as a singer, at only nineteen. Bonham was already the most influential monster in the history of rock drumming. Unreal.

Well, I hear a lot of rap listeners talk about sampling, etc, they're simply not used to actual musicians, singers, lyrics, drummers (no drum machines), solid bass, and guitarists, as opposed to pushing buttons in a studio with auto tune, and other garbage....it's funny sometimes 😄

It was a harmonica but they very subtly transitioned to guitar. Just amazing. I have to say that I think Robert Plant still manages to use his voice really really well considering his post 70 age. His recent performances with Allison Krauss demonstrate that. Certainly over time he lost some range but he found other ways to make up for it. He was the only Zepplin member to be very successful as a solo artist and he keeps creating really interesting music, using his voice skillfully. And he still sounds sexy, which is amazing.

Each had a part to play and the ability to mesh their individual talents with each other regardless of instrument is the alchemy that Led Zeppelin was about. Their musicality, feel, rhythm, groove, timing, etc. were second to none.

The lyrics about birds is from a very old song Corrina Corrina which was popular in the 50's but probably much older. "I've got a bird that whistles I've got a bird that sings but I ain't got Corrina life don't mean a thing" They may take from old songs but what they make from them is always on an EPIC level!!

This was Led Zeppelin introducing themselves to the world as 4 musicians. Bonham keeping the beat Page with his incredible playing and innovative riffs, Jones, playing multiple instruments, bass, organ and others, and Plant using his voice as an instrument to match along with playing the harmonica. Listen to it again they blended the Organ into the Harmonica and then into Jimmy’s guitar seamlessly

I read somewhere that drummers normally follow bass players but in LZ Bonham was instructed by Page to follow him. Bonham may have been reluctant to do that at first as their manager Peter Grant told him to do what Page said or get out of the band (though he said it in ruder terms). This must have been early days. Page and Bonham seemed to get on well after that. Led Zeppelin liked to get creative in their music which is one reason why they weren't keen to make singles records.

Another really fun reaction to an incredible song. And yeah that was a harp with an echo and then it kind of got overlapped and transitioned into a guitar with an echo. And did you notice that just about all of the solo work mimicked not only each other, but also a bird both whistling and then sometimes singing? Amazing. But I've heard you say this in at least four different reactions now, just keep in mind there are a lot of us out there, and believe me I'm an adequate singer but I've been able to record with incredibly gifted singers both in the studio and live and from my viewpoint, his voice and singing ability just got better and better every year. Of course it all ended too soon but you have to consider that his voice may have been changing just slightly like he may have lost like a half of a step or maybe a whole step Max over several years from the top of his range and that's it. What was changing more importantly was what he was choosing to do. It just got better and better and better. Check out the character that it has that's a bit more mature and a lot richer and in my view much better, even though I did not think so and I was young, but now I've felt this way for years, that last album, in through the outdoor, I kind of downplayed it when I was really young, cuz I thought it was just not quite as hard rocking. But now that I've had a long time and a lot more experience, it is a total masterpiece. Every level it's a masterpiece. But he's singing is definitely a part of that for sure.

You should check out My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. It is a studio album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, released in February 1981. One of the first examples of sampling.

As you’re now doing all Zep’s tracks in order, what happens when you get to ones you’ve already done (before you started them chronologically)? Are you going to do them again (for example No Quarter) or miss them out?

What up Carl! Yh I'll probably skip them out unless people think its important to keep them in still

Really psychedelic and heavy take on the blues - a little bit Hendrix like. Compare this version to Jeff Beck’s version on Truth. Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart are awesome, but they play it straight. Zep’s version is drenched in echo and the heavy drums and Plant’s voice create the uniquely Zep vibe. Also, check out the live version on April 27 at Fillmore West on KZfaq. The only word to describe it is “filthy”. Thanks!

Page is using a Pedal Steel guitar. It's basically a bench with a fret-less, fretboard and pickups on it. The strings are set up quite high off the board so you can use a slide on it, hence the smooth note changes.

He is? I don’t think so, but I think he’s using a slide on a Tele, with wah and echo. Am I wrong?

@@Dan-zq5wt Yes you are I'm afraid. I got this from Page himself in an interview. He's not using the foot pedals though as he said he had a hard time with them.

@@wiggles877 thanks much, that’s very cool that you interviewed Page! But make sure you’re not confusing with Your Time is Gonna Come because he definitely uses the steel guitar there and talks about the pedals

@@Dan-zq5wt Sorry, clarification needed; I read it in an interview done by Guitar World, not one I did myself. I'm positive it was 'You Shook Me'. I'll try and dig it up to absolutley confirm.
