After less than a year living in the US, and having had a problem with my vehicle that left me "motorless" for 2 months, I can say that either you have a vehicle or you are dead to the world. It was such a claustrophobic experience. For all my adult life I have had a car that I have used like 10 times a year, moving around in public transport or by foot the rest of the time. And not being able to do ANYTHING was like being under house arrest. My office mate would carpool with me in and out of work, and to get groceries when I needed, but I couldn't do ANYTHING else. I think that the only reason why US citizens do not revolt agains this dystopian system is because they think that the rest of the world is more or less the same, that taking the metro and taking the car is basically the same. But I think that they have not experience the psychological freedom of not being fundamentally dependent on having your own vehicle.

I don't follow Hasan much but I really enjoyed this, even more so than the podcast with Ludwig & Connor. Connor is just a glass is half empty guy (average UK dude) and Hasan is glass is half full (at least when it comes to Japan). Both having a pretty good insight of Japans pros and cons lead to a really fun and interesting discussions.
