The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall OST (OPL3/adlmidi/Sound Blaster)

A 1996 RPG by Bethesda Softworks. Extracted FM files rendered using ADLMIDI's bank 10. ADLMIDI is the Sound Blaster/OPL3 emulator used by Dosbox. The instruments sound correct, but it's likely that there are some small differences. The track names are based on the files names, commonly used names, the groupings in the game executable and the midi code of the open source Daggerfall Unity project. As there aren't FM versions of some tracks, I included GM versions of these being played in FM mode.
Composition by Eric Heberling and an unknown composer (the numbered tracks are mostly by the latter).

Privateer's Hold is the prime dungeon music in TES Arena. scared the Hell out of me of course the excessive rat noise was pointless and did not indicate an enemy present as it did in TES Arena. The music was so good, it was enough to persuade me to change the settings from GM to SBPro(FM)-with the aid of a fellow GOG user. I use GOG but you can adjust it in the config. you can get the original FM sound which is different than the track in this vid.

Definitely a few notches difference in tone from the current ost listenable thru the Daggerfall Unity build.

Actually, Daggerfall Unity still uses MIDI, and you can change the soundfont through the configuration file. I changed it to the same one in the video (SoundBlaster 16) and it sounds great. You could also experiment with more soundfonts, like a SNES one for a 16 bit-esque sound, or ones with higher quality samples for something more orchestral.

Dang! The Midi Privateer's Hold sounds so much better than the remastered one. The remastered one sounds like a South American jungle temple theme and doesn't fit the setting at all, whereas this midi version sounds more like a scary, medieval fantasy dungeon.

I wish there was a way to use the SBPro version of Privateer's Hold but the GM version for tavern music(at the same time not changing settings). the SBPro tavern music(at least on mine) is hurting my ears! you can't have your cake and eat it too I guess.

@Noah Bravo General Midi is simply a standard specification for Midi devices, it works with almost anything. I sometimes play GM games using my Korg N364 keyboard. Generally, you had to use an external device with DOS, such as Roland's famous Sound Canvas series, with Windows software synths like the GS Wavetable Synth became commonplace. Various sound cards have their own implementations as well.

So, back in the day you either had an expensive and fancy General MIDI setup or you were poor and used OPL/Soundblaster 2. Daggerfall was set up for either options, and different tracks would play depending on what you had. The dungeon theme here is what played if you used OPL/Soundblaster 2. The other version floating around on KZfaq is what played if you were rich and had a fancy Roland or Yamaha sound setup etc. Daggerfall Unity, the modern engine, uses its own software soundfont for consistency and plays the fancier General MIDI versions by default (though there is an option to use the OPL/Soundblaster soundtrack instead!) In practice this Privateer's Hold is what most children playing Daggerfall would've heard back in the day while the fancier version is either older individuals who had expensive setups remember or what newer fans who came in with DFU learned as Privateer's Hold.

Oh, and DOSbox I think is set up for Soundblaster 2 for Daggerfall by default (though I think it also has General MIDI emulation - dunno, never bothered to check if it works with daggerfall) so if you came on using that, it'd also be this version of Privateer's Hold.
