I have a copy an advertisment for this exact console. It doesn't use an photo, it has a color illustration and it's one of my favorite print ads ever.

People overlook Sylvania equipment. One of the great things about these units is the fact Sylvania was using metal knobs and faceplate parts long after the others had moved on to cheaper plastics. I love their knob designs as they are reminiscent of McIntosh.

It is a nice looking piece of furniture. And it actually fits in with your home decor! The fact that it works so well is almost secondary.

Although I do not care for this particular design, I LOOOOOVE console stereos. They were beautiful pieces of furniture that filled your home with music. The best were the ones that had a cabinet underneath where the turntable and tuner was, for record storage.

Wooden cabinets are the best, I think, for stereo. They have a richness that is superb. Congratulations on a fine console, and I am sure that your children and grandchildren will appreciate it as much as you do.

I remember how the Sylvania consol stereo cabinets where very high quality, and the sound quality was excellent for a consumer product. I remember looking at a new one in the store that was black lacquer chinoise motif. It was beautiful!

It's all original with the exception of the Ipod connection I added. A lot of tender love and care has been given to this unit for 46 years and counting. Thanks for checking out this item.

Great looking console! I just bought a nice looking RCA Victor Victrola VLT52F this afternoon that I believe was made in the mid 70s. I'm still looking for info on it. It works great and has a really smooth sound for an all-original radio. When I was a teenager in the 80s, we had a console that I loved playing LPs on. It was sold or given away when we moved and I've been wanting another one ever since. I'm a happy console-aholic now!

Sylvania made high quality stuff back then. Last month I bought a Sylvania receiver with a Dual 1214 built in from 1973. After some TLC and a new stylus that this sounds amazing. Now I just need to make some room and set it up with a pair of decent speakers.

I am also restoring a Sylvania SC 274 K with a Garrard 3500 (has been repaired and working). The radio/amp/receiver just hums and I will be looking for a replacement receiver that is about 6x13" to fit the hole. My cabinet has been sandblasted and hand sanded down to it's original super smooth hard wood and it will be dark red mahogany.

A work of art.. And one of the wider ones, so the stereo seperation is very decent (relatively so for a console).. Those are 3-way speakers right (it's blurry at times)?.. Very, very, VERY impressive bass from those woofers, that are NOT 12"ers.. I can tell from the contrast to you hand.. are they even 10"?.. UNBELIEVABLE, even in the sub-bass.. but even MORE impressive is the transcendecy from the upper-bass to low-mid then again to midrange, the most usable and hence most musically important playfield of app. 300Hz-3.5KHz, especially for the (magnetically-recorded) vocal range. Sylavania was part of GT&E International, eventually becoming GTE Sylvania, and though I'm not certain when GTE expanded into Germany, could those loudspeakers possibly have been manufactured by Elac? The higher frequencies are good, more than adequate considering the time-frame.. The lacking upper-high frequency range is nothing that a very good, newer cartridge/stylus combination can't improve. If only Sylvania had placed the woofers at the extreme outter low corners, instead of the inner ones, to take full advantage of the console width's stereo seperation, in which the lower frequencies suffer most analogous to the increase in loudness and decrease in Hertz of same said frequencies.. (But that is something that an accomplished acoustician could easily rectify for you through a very simple reconstructive reversal modification.. ie:> swap the left and right speaker mounting braces.. so as to remain as close to 100% OEM factory stock as possible). All the best, and thankyou for the audio/visual demonstration and the space

Hello, sorry to reply back so late. To answer your question at the time of purchase you were given an option to have the unit with a Dual 1015 turntable or for an upgrade cost to a Dual 1019, which is what my uncle had done. Thank you for viewing.

This would put a Magnavox console out of it's misery. The quality on both the electronics and cabinet is phenomenal. With that Dual you don't have to worry about those dreaded ceramic cartridges (some are good) tearing up your precious vinyls.

Beautiful instrument...but they were (rightfully) very very expensive. Magnavox had ALL the price-points covered. In this price strata, the Sylvania would struggle a bit against a Magnavox Imperial with a sealed acoustical tunnel, 7 lbs. of magnet weight on 2-15" woofers...not to mention 4-Treble horns. You likely have never seen nor heard a Magnavox Imperial...that series did not appear in the standard Magnavox catalog, nor was it available to most Magnavox dealers. The Imperial series had it's own separate franchise agreement and catalog. By 1970, the final Magnavox Imperial series set a milestone as the most elaborate all-in-one radio-phonograph-reel to reel tape instruments ever produced. Magnavox OUTSOLD its competition in EVERY price segment for good reason. In sum, one can appreciate the fine quality of this Sylvania without unfairly knocking Magnavox.

You made some excellent points. However, even the midrange Magnavox's were excellent instruments.

Would like to know more about that "tape monitor" - there was a stereo mini "male" connector that you could put into the ear phone hole of an iPod and play it as an auxiliary device? That seems very forward thinking for 1966. It essentially makes the unit bluetooth ready.

Waaaaay too beautiful! Great record changer- has a magnetic cart? A magnetic would be out of the ordinary for that era, but given the quality of the rest of the unit, it's probably to be expected.

LOOKS & SOUNDS INCREDIBLE! Did you have new capacitors put in the amp yet? If not, please save it from the imminent danger of 1 shorting or opening as by now, over 50 yrs later, they have dried up. I used to restore vintage electronics & was always amazed even how much BETTER a unit would sound once the caps are all replaced! Makes a HUGE difference

Hey there. I have a similar console (Sylvania/Dual 1010) and the sound seems to be going. How do I learn about repairing it? Is that what it needs? New capacitors?
@garyeggleton1142
@garyeggleton1142 5 жыл бұрын
yes....all electrolytic capacitors need replacing, and make sure they are soldered in right, they are polarized....and that will help alot. there may be more to do, but that is a must, and a modern three prong cord helps too

I would like to get anyone's ideas on using a Bluetooth receiver with my Fisher 500C receiver and which ones would be good and not overly expensive that will be applicable! Also, what input would I use? I am currently utilizing the Aux/Tape input for the CD player and have a cassette in the Tape monitor input! I have a Dual 1019 too BTW

I've gotten overall good results with a Nyrius BR40 Bluetooth receiver when used with my 1967 Magnavox console. I have it hooked to the TAPE-IN connections on the amp chassis. The one issue I have with it is the audio signal isn't all that loud; when I'm streaming audio, I have to have the volume maxed on the device and turned up quite a way on the console to get a fairly mediocre level of actual sound. What I do get sounds pretty damned good, though. The problem is many portable devices (MP3 players, smart phones, tablets, CD and cassette type 'walkman' devices, and the like) are designed to drive those tiny little headphones, not line-level amp inputs. I partially resolved the problem by buying and installing a TEC TC-780LC line-level booster amp, which is designed specifically to handle input-level mismatches like this. It still isn't quite as loud as the console's built-in tuner or changer, but it is far better now than it was. The AUX-IN is shared by the Bluetooth receiver, a cassette deck, and a CD player via an external input selector. It's not the most elegant solution, but I have the switch box hung on the back of the console, out of sight but easily accessible. And the TAPE-OUT ports on the amp drive a Behringer UFO202 USB interface so I can transfer my music to MP3. Of course, in adding this equipment, I was careful to not make any permanent changes to the console. I can remove everything without a trace in about 20 minutes. The only permanent changes to the unit were the replacement of the original capacitors in the radio/amp chassis with modern equivalents, which means all those quaint old 'can' style capacitors are gone now.
