The grass crest shield is one of the best in the game. It gives you stamina regeneration. Even if you are two-handing your weapon the bonus still applies. By the way you do more damage if you two-hand your weapon.

I think Amber has the best grasp of how to use jumping attacks/kicks out of any blind playthroughs I've seen, most new players exclusively use it accidentally lol

Also, if you ever lose your mind and decide to join the world of PvP with us damned souls, buy the Indictment. You only need one. When a red invader kills you, you can indict them, meaning a blue invader can invade them when they're in human form. It's literally just spreading the PvP around.

halberd supremacy! just a little tip for if you continue using one, they have something called a "sweetspot." so when swinging it, try to be at the right position so that the blade hits the enemy rather than the handle and you'll get a small damage bonus you're doing really well so far, a lot of people struggle a lot more with the butterfly on their first playthrough!

Grass Crest Shield - very useful properties, one of my favourite defensive items. I’m sure you will like this shield if you give it a chance. 🙂

Two handing a weapon increases it's damage by quite a lot. You can do that with one button in situations where shield is not needed. Also in the last episode, you have picked up a key when opening the gate behind the boar. You should check it's description which can lead you on the ''proper'' path.

I especially like the part where Amber murders the defenseless hollows in New Londo without remorse.

You hear the bell when another player rings it in their game. So when you heard the bell while fighting the big guy, someone had just beaten the Bell Gargoyles and rang the bell. One of my favorite things about dark souls is all the little ways you notice other players struggling through the game alongside you in a kind of kinship.

@2:59 The poison, etc. bars appearing is actually a good thing. It means your equipment gives you greater resistance. If it normally takes, say, 100 points of poison buildup to poison you and you equip gear that makes it now take 120 points, you go from 0/100 poison buildup to 20/120, and then it decays back to 0/120. It's so you can't swap to a poison resistance set when you're already being poisoned.

Well played. one thing you need to consider especially for the boss fights though, is that you can hold your weapon with two hands too. so for the fights that for whatever reason you don't have a shield equipped or equipping a shield is useless and want to deal the maximum damage to the enemy, you better avoid one hand attacks, switch to two-hand mode quick and hit the boss.

Oh nooo 27:33 that death was SO tragic lol Also, just a friendly reminder to two-hand your weapon more often--it deals a lot more damage. And you can swap pretty quickly between two-handing and one-handing Also also, I think you can hold down on the D-pad to instantly cycle back to the Estus Flask rather than having to cycle through all the other items. Though there's a chance they added that in later games and I'm misremembering.

You're doing way better than I was when I first played this game, I was stuck in the undead parish for a week before I could beat the gargoyles. It's okay to not be good at Dark Souls from the start. The whole game revolves around the fact that you aren't going to be doing well from time to time, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Every failure you experience is just a step you take closer to being successful

When something grabs you repeatedly pressing the shoulder buttons helps throw the enemy of you faster, I think.

I think the bells just mean that other players just successfully killed the bosses related to the bells.

A few non-spoilery tips - try out the full moveset of each weapon you test. Weapons can potentially have a light and heavy version of regular, running, and rolling attacks, and depending on the weapon each of those might be good, situational, or near worthless. For example, the halberd's one handed heavy is a pretty bad attack in most situations, as it's slow, has shorter reach, and doesn't do much more damage than the light attack. - Using a weapon two handed means it counts your strength rating one and a half times, meaning it will deal more damage based on scaling and also be easier to meet requirements. It also changes up the moveset, which can be good or bad depending on the weapon. Of course, the downside is not being able to use a shield - When enemies do a high-commitment attack, especially a ranged attack that can easily miss, sprint to close distance so you'll have more time to punish them. - Unless you're fanatical about avoiding any kind of spoilers, I recommend looking up the encumbrance system. Encumbrance only matters at specific breakpoints, and if you know where they are you can load up to just below those breakpoints for more defense. - You can buy small titanite shards from Andre. If you want a little more damage that can be easier than grinding for drops to get up to +5 basic weapons. - Generally don't bother with dual-wielding, at least in Dark Souls 1. It has different levels of viability and different rules in each game, but DS1 is by far the least generous. - It's more forgiving than parrying or dodging, but with shields it's still best to spend as little time using your shield as possible, and only bring it up just before the attack connects. Shields dramatically reduce your stamina regen. - Endurance is a really good stat to level up if you aren't angling for a specific weapon's prerequisites, as it increases both your stamina AND max equip load - Bows are kinda useless for dealing serious damage, but they're a great way to draw aggro from a manageable number of foes at once. Shoot an enemy and they'll rush you while their buddies who you might aggro as you approach will just stand there. - The slightly insubstantial figures standing or sitting near a bonfire are other players, but you can't interact beyond admiring them.

If you hit the start button on your controller, you can choose your inventory, or equipment menus. But you can also choose a player status menu that shows you a lot of useful information such as Right hand 1, Right hand 2 weapon attack power. This number reflects the base damage plus any bonus from your stats plus any additional damage like fire or magic damage. It's an easy way of figuring out how much damage a weapon will do without having to do all the math in your head.

The door you encounter at 1 hour and 5 minutes into this video is in fact opened by the crest Andre sells! You were correct there. Good job beating the Moonlight Butterfly.

2:57 "What's that poison and bleed on me for? Is it going to hurt me that use this?" The weapon _improves_ your ailment resistances. The bars display due to a quirk in how resistances work in FromSoft games. You dont suffer the effects of a status ailment until the meter fills up. Any time that you equip an item and an ailment bar briefly displays, it's because that gear has a resistance bonus, and the meter has to deplete by the amount that just got added to its length.

The gargoyle tail axe increases your resistance to poison, toxic, and bleed. The meters show up temporarily when your resistance increases. The gargoyle helm and the gargoyle halberd also have this effect.

Dude, I am so impressed by how quickly you understood how to approach the game. Like right from the beginning, you were taking it slow, not panicking, assessing situations before running in, being methodical, using the environment to your advantage, being patient, etc. I was NOWHERE NEAR this good the first time I played Dark Souls.

The Claymore is a great starter strength weapon, located under where the dragon is near Solaire, the guy looking at the sun in Undead Berg. I tend to lure it out with the bow then run underneath to the bonfire

I haven’t been this excited for a dark souls playthrough for a while just based off of your first episode, you noticed things that I had never noticed and definitely wouldn’t have discovered on my first playthrough. To fully appreciate this game it takes a your style of play and that is hard to come by as a viewer. Also excited to go back and watch your Bloodborne and Hollow Knight playthroughs! That axe wasn't hurting you. It gives a bonus to your resistances to some status effects, bleed, poison and toxic if I remember correctly. I think the reason it does that is items that boost resistances raise your max gauge for the bar but don't increase your current, making it look like you took a bit of status buildup. It clears almost immediately so all good.

Love the DS1 playthrough of you Amber, just a little hint: if you equip weapons they will all count to your total equip load so it´s better to only equip the weapons you are currently using. Besides that take a better look on the grass crest shield... I´m looking forward to the next episode!

Little hint, lock on isn't always your friend!. Humanity isn't a precious resource either, there's a dlc area where you can farm as much as you want. I kindle every bonfire to max level every time I play, no harm in it.

Its hard to describe where to get the armour you liked at 16:30 without spoilers. The best i can say is, you get it from an enemy. You will know it when you see it. Make sure you kill that enemy last in that encounter, and you will then be able to buy the armour from a merchant.

Darkroot Garden isn’t a joke area, it’s just a Dark Souls area. Which means everything hates you, including the plants and dare I say the ground beneath your feet too. This not meant as a hateful comment, just that Dark Souls is not a friendly world. We love your gameplay, and I’ve never seen someone use black firebombs effectively in that fight with the Moonlight Butterfly before either.

The way that I spent MINUTES thinking this was the screenshot for a Tears of the Kingdom episode and I was like "how have I not seen this yet"

Anytime you are grabbed, you can shorten the time you take dmg for by spamming the shoulder buttons (so light attack and block)

Very much admire your ability to be like "Nah, fuck this, I'm out for now." Much better than my usual first playthrough tactic of "throw myself at this enemy until I figure it out even if it takes a handful of deaths"

Consider talking to NPCs until they start repeating themselves, they often give useful information. Also many NPCs will get new lines of dialogue after you complete key events such as beating a boss or finding a new area, so talking to NPCs you have previously talked to can yield useful information. The Crestfallen Knight for example will continuously get new lines of dialogue as you progress through the game.

You are doing great! Just a reminder that you can buy all the tinanites shards you want at Andre the blacksmith, i believe he sells them at 500 souls a piece. So dont worry about spending your titanites and upgrade your weapons as much as you can.

Make sure to read item descriptions for weapons and armor you pick up. Some have unique effects or abilities that make them much more useful than you might expect. The Grass Crest Shield is an example of this - it's one of the best shields in the game.
