The Tree can be seen as a symbol of order as it converges into the one, but it can also be seen as order as it separates into the many.

As an Arborist this explanation touched me deeply. I remember the day I choose to work with the trees and the feeling I had looking up into a huge white pine in a meditative state deep in the forest. I felt that up there between the crown and the sky was a connection I needed to explore to find myself(something like That?). Best decision I could of made at the time , shortly there after I left the military, started working with trees. 12 years later I have a great outdoor job I love and a family with two healthy children. Thanks, love your insight.

When you talked about Jesus wearing the crown of thorns, it struck me in the heart. I will spend my life, and I am sure my afterlife, drinking in the truth of His sacrifice, love, and absolute glory. I will be always feeling for His parameters, but He absolutely exceeds parameters. Thank you, Jonathan. When I learn about Jesus, with the Spirit’s help, I am soaring. ❤️

Johnathan i fell to my knees the moment you connected christ being on the cross as being the embodiment of the whole garden of eden story. The surge of understanding that washed over me was pretty f*ckin intense. I mean my goodness THIS is why christianity has endured and should. This is what i was missing when was a teenager dedicating my time to atheistic arguments and christianity bashing...i didnt fully see the deep symbolic understanding of the christian* tradition.

I'm a Jew. There is no Judaeo Christianity. We reject the New Testament. Would it surprise you to know that we have our own interpretation of this? 16 "Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy." The Tree of Life is the Torah. And in it is contained G-ds Law. "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day." King David Make it about Jesus, Mohammed or anyone you wish. But it has a context.

@@divinegraceberbano1256 Thank you @Ron Tate, I suppose the best place to start explaining what the physical things of this realm translates to in the realm of allegory/metaphor so let us start with the "4 Elements" which are both literal and metaphorical and by the way the word element is a compound word, (EL= Of God in masculine) (Le = Of God Feminine) (Ment = of the Mind) It is a suffix of Latin origin which means; the product of doing something a.k.a. "finished work". The first element is Air (Literal=Air, Metaphorical=Breath) which is the most important or the Alpha, it is in all the other elements as well, the word "Spirit" is from the Latin word Spiritus which means Breath. We use Air to breath and to speak which passes knowledge. God is a Spirit which means that God is Air. The second element is Fire, (Literal=Fire, Metaphorical=Light/Knowledge) Fire is an energy which empowers, an Atom/Energy creates, Atum/The Sun creates, Adam/The 1st Son creates which by the way all were split into two to create. Light is the first of all creation, it is through light that all things were created. The third element is Water, (Literal=Water, Metaphorical=Thought) Water gives life, it is a powerful force on this planet, thought is about the most powerful force of the mind, water gives life and it's through thought that we conceive or manifest things into this realm, (Mary/Mariah/Maria) means "Sea of sorrow", She conceived the "Son of God". The fourth element is Earth (Literal=Earth, Metaphorical=Body) In Genesis the first appearance is God/Air, He hovers of the Waters/Thought and says; "Let there be Light/Fire/Knowledge"

Does it feel to you, like it does to me, that you understand somewhere in your deepest spirit in a way you can’t wrap your mind around? Like seeing a gemstone at the bottom of a pool. The water, light, and any objects in the pool obscure it, but you know there is something bright and beautiful there. The most valuable thing of all.

Great video. I have also done some investigation into this symbolism and come across another fascinating connection. I'll try to keep it brief. The Hebrew word for tree is "etz". When the LXX translators came to this word they had to decide between two greek words for "tree", dendron and xulan. For most uses they put dendron. However, for verses referring to a cursed tree (cursed is everyone hung on a tree), they would use the word xulan. Now fast forward a few hundred years, the book of Revelation never mentions the cross, however, it often mentions the tree of life, specifically, the "xulan" of life in greek. We can see here that John is making a connection between the tree of life in the garden and the cross. But it gets better. The rule from the garden is that if you eat the fruit of the tree of life you live. And in John 6 Jesus tells us to eat his body and blood, in other words, to partake of the "fruit" of the "tree of life", that is, his body on the cross. But what is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Well, knowledge of good and evil comes through the law, and Moses represents the law. He also had a tree, specifically, his staff. And his staff turns into a snake, just like there was a snake in the tree of the law in the garden. So the two trees represent the two covenants. The tree of the law, which is supposed to impart life, actually brings death (see Romans). And the xulan, which is supposed bring death and a curse, is actually what brings life.

I know it's been 5 years since you wrote this, but I just found this video by Jonathan. You are so right! I also came to the conclusion that the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was the law. The law reveals the perfect God, but convicts all mankind, as Paul pointed out, it shows us our sins. I didn't know about the 2 words for tree and that is an awesome find and showing how the same word in connection with the cross is used for the tree of life in Revelation and His body as the fruit, is awesome!

I remember a Greek Orthodox professor saying that when the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened, they saw-not only their own nakedness but also-Christ on the cross. Turning their eyes from the cross, they then saw how all the world followed the cycle of cross-tomb-resurrection, and rather than participate in this cosmic order by embracing any cross or vulnerability themselves, they instead tried to flee this order and return to the non-being from which they came-if only through hiding themselves. I want to say he attributed that to Maximus, but after years of searching (and a bit of thesis research) I still can't track down which of the fathers came up with this gloss.

Thank you for this presentation. I appreciate all your efforts in this project. Perhaps the absence of the fig tree in the Crucifixion is significant in that Christ is naked, totally vulnerable without any attempt to hide behind fig leaves like Adam and Eve. Rather he embraces his vulnerability "despising the shame".

Just wow Jonathan. This is incredible. Absolutely incredible. Pontius Pilate ate from the Tree of Good and Evil and cast us out of the garden once more. Whoever wrote these stories must have been super geniuses. This is so incredible I haven't even processed all of it. It's absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for this.

From Wiki: In all gospel accounts, Pilate is reluctant to condemn Jesus, but is eventually forced to give in when the crowd becomes unruly and the Jewish leaders remind him that Jesus' claim to be king is a challenge to Roman rule and to the Roman deification of Caesar. Roman magistrates had wide discretion in executing their tasks, and some readers[who?] question whether Pilate would have been so captive to the demands of the crowd. Pilate was later recalled to Rome for his harsh treatment of the Jews.[27][28] The tree of Good and Evil is the border between order and chaos The story literally embodies the sentiment of them saying that the world was not ready to live in harmony between order and chaos. That people were still too chaotic to achieve Eden. That in eating from the tree of Good and Evil they'd actually attained some good. But they were still too evil. That is, they had attained some measure of order, some measure of control over their subconsciousness, over their lives. Some measure of control over their baser instincts and had started to be able to really project themselves out on to the world. He's then demonstrating that they'd not eaten enough from the tree. One taste was not enough. You need to eat more. He's literally saying there's not enough order. Neither in ourselves, nor in our societies. He's literally demonstrating that by having the chaotic mob tell him to kill the Tree of Life. To cast it away when it was presented to them again, for they were not yet ready, and then... "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.". I mean wow. That's pretty incredible? I don't even know what to think of this.

Thank you for your videos on symbolism, Jonathan. For years, I have been enraptured by mythology and its symbolic significance, though I don't have quite the brain-power to tie these concepts together. As an Orthodox Christian and writer, I am sometimes hesitant to dive too deeply into the symbolic meaning of events in the Bible because I'm afraid of being labeled a heretic or just another liberal Christian who doesn't have enough faith to believe in the events, and so I'm attempting to "spiritualize" them.

Fantastic! This is actually very well timed for me; I'm in the process of putting together a talk about the Grail of Amsterdam, which I showed you on Facebook if you remember. Obviously, knowledge of Christ is elementary for that, and knowledge of Christ demands a sophisticated understanding of the narrative thread of the whole Bible. Some of the things I read in my own research make more sense now (save for this weird link between Christ and fish, which I doubt is only an attempt at obscurity, as people want to tell me), which really helps me do my job properly. Thanks a million for that! I'm also reminded of Bright, which is a very puzzling movie (if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean; it seems to have suffered a lot during the editing), where a four-pronged pool with a tree growing right over it sets the scene for the awakening of the "Hero". Most other elements you mentioned were also present. It struck me as very odd to find such a complex symbol in an otherwise so confused and awkward movie, though I did sense phantoms of a deeper narrative throughout it. I know you've had your fill of talking about ideological preoccupation in pop culture, but it's an interesting case study nonetheless, just to get your own brain going. I'd like to see you discuss the role of God the Father. As a matter of fact, I'm in need of inspiration where my approach of God proper is concerned... But maybe that's too personal a question :o

I remember reading Dante’s Purgatory and my surprise that the Garden of Eden was at the top of a mountain. When Dante and Virgil climbed back up to the surface of the earth from Hell, they were in the southern hemisphere which was portrayed (if I remember rightly) as a vast ocean because all land had been moved to the northern hemisphere. I can’t remember why. So they sail the ocean until they get to this island which consists of the different levels of Purgatory. I had no idea why Dante chose this scenario but your video makes me think that maybe he was drawing a picture of sinful humanity rising up from the chaos of the ocean to be cleansed as they worked their way back to the type of relationship Adam had enjoyed with God before the Fall.

Love it!I would love to hear a symbolic interpretation of Jesus walking on water and Peter attempting to do the same. The chaos of the water/ocean, the chaos of the storm, Jesus walking on chaos and ordering chaos.Just from my shallow understanding of the symbolism in the story, I can see such depth and meaning in it.

This great commentary was released weeks before my younger brother Trey died on February 19, 2018. After his death I was drawn to the symbol of the World Tree or Tree of Life. I’ve been wearing a Tree pendant ever since. I’m not fully clear why I was spiritually connected to this symbol. What you’ve taught in this video has been very enlightening. 😘

I think certain types of people have a need for the sublime and others have a need for the literal or practical. As a former atheist I always had the idea the literal was the truest and religion was claims of the literal. And that works for the more literal minded people, they see science and materialism as the best tool for their lives, but I've always been hungry for the sublime and which is I found new age stuff appealing in my teens. I've since recently discovered the sublime in christiananity and western culture as a whole and I must say I'm saddend I was never sold the sublime aspect of both as a kid, I feel robbed.
