Ive been looking around recently and its come dowm to the shure vp 83 and the rode videomic pro (not plus) and i cant seem to decide, any advice? I want to record wildlife and birdsong along with my photography

I’ve never used the Shure mic to speak on that but what I can tell you is that I use the Rode mic for almost everything when recording in camera (even when filming for network documentaries). I think it’s that good!

Does this mic work well for ambient sounds? For example, if I wanted to record nature sounds and pick up all the sounds rather than just one animal call?
