Interview with Symphony X during Sweden Rock Festival 2007. Band members Michael Romeo and Russell Allen. Symphony X is an American progressive metal band from New Jersey. Founded in 1994, the band consists of guitarist Michael Romeo, keyboardist Michael Pinnella, drummer Jason Rullo, lead vocalist Russell Allen and bassist Michael Lepond. Interview by Janne Stark.

Russell is pretty built too. He's also an amazing singer and he's the vocalist I aspire to be. But overall Symphony X is just a killer band of great musicians, great songs, great albums, and so forth. \m/ \m/

I like the new one and i Liked the Odyssey pretty much, but I still have some hope for them returning to more the melodical stuff like in V, Divine Wings...but I'm sure they won't. The last two ones lack a little bit of his vocal variety he has. The smoother and bluesy stuff is so great but unfortunately rare on the last two ones.

Symphony X incorporates odd time signatures plenty anyway, it's just that Dream Theater does it more than anyone else. Anyway I'd say that DT and SX have more to do with each other than they do with 99% of other bands.

Michael Romeo decent at guitar. No, he is just absolutely killer. I am a decnt guitarist, but he blows me out of the universe. Now he would DAMNED SURE have his hands full with Marcel Coenen though. It would be a HELLUVA friendly playoff.

actually old prog rock started somewhere in the middle of the 70's with CAMEL and KANSAS. . . then it came a band called FATES WARNING which gives the touch or the guide of the 80s and 90s progressive metal.

actually it isn't. I own it and even have the tab books. It may seem like it is in 4/4 but it is a varient of 3/8 15/4 and such. I'm talking about the whole album, not one song you might have listened to

I have to disagree about the time signatures. Listen to the new Dream Theater album. It's 4/4 almost all the time. Some of the (older) Symph stuff has some really cool meters. Power metal?!? Polar opposites?

Yup I know that :P And Yes, King Crimson, ELP etc... however in terms of pioneering prog *metal*, Fates Warning would be there along with Dream Theater (who got big a couple of years after Fates Warning, but really popularised the genre).

they are polar opposites though. Symphony x is more power metal, symphonic power metal. Dream theater is prog metal. just listen to Symph's set the world on fire and listen to dream theater's glass prison or dark eternal night. Dream theater incorporates odd time signatures where as symph normally has 4/4 or 3/4

@DaveMustaineOwns To me, chilled out is like relaxed and easy-going. I guess by calm I meant sort of quiet and they show less emotion. That's just in my opinion though, take it with a grain of salt.

Dream Theater are more accomplished and often considered as *the best* prog metal act ever. That being said, there are a number of reasons people listen to Symphony X- I love Symph X, more than DT- I find them more melodic and really think their music suits me even more than DT. It's like saying The Beatles are better than Queen- both are great bands, Beatles often said to be "the best Rock band ever" but while they're both Rock, they're both very different- but many people like Queen more.

I disagree, because both bands have there good and bad points. But there is no point trying to compare them, cause the only thing that they have in common is that they are prog. If you don't like them, then don't listen to them.
