I've seen some discourse in the comments, and I just want to apologise on behalf of the fanbase, I know some people feel very strongly about this song but it does not warrant nastiness or the discrediting of your experience and connection to the song! The song is not religious, they are right, however if you feel you can express your religion and worship through the song, then that is beautiful and totally okay! I myself am an atheist, but as far as I know, the modern church adapts many popular songs into songs of worship because of their themes of overcoming adversity, having faith and showing love for those around you. If you feel Hallelujah is a true expression of your relationship to God then you have every right to enjoy the song as such! And lastly, thank you for sharing this beautiful reaction with us, you are stunning and this is a real display of emotion and connection, it was heartwarming to watch!

@@symplytraciereacts There are religious adaptations of the original lyrics, which can confuse if that is the main context in which you have heard it before (ie, if you have been a gospel music fan). I was baffled by your reference to "biblical references". The original songwriter, Leonard Cohen, the wrote of lost love and broken hearts. The hazard with Pentatonix reactions is that they are so breathtakingly beautifully the lyrics get overwhelmed. To further your understanding of the song, try listening to Leonard Cohen's performance, it's a completely different experience. 🌹👼

@anonagain

There are very clear references to King David and Samson, such as when King David sees a beautiful young lady bathing from his balcony. There are also very clear references to 'deviant' sexual behavior in some of the verses not heard here. The only thing I've ever read Cohen say about it: "“This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled. But there are moments when we can… reconcile and embrace the whole mess, and that’s what I mean by ‘Hallelujah’. The song explains that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value. It’s a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion.” IMO, no interpretation is more or less valid than another. And IMO this rendition is indeed a spiritual experience regardless of what the listener believes.

What's more amazing is that there were no instruments or back-up tracks. That was all done by just those five acapella singers. Scott, the man who started it, created a group of kids, called acaPop Kids, that will blow your mind almost as much as Pentatonix did, singing "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2. You should check them out, as well!!! By the way, you said you couldn't do a reaction, but you reacted the same as anyone did listening to these amazing people.

It certainly isn't a gospel song Tracie, 'In Hebrew, the word hallelujah means to rejoice in praising God. However, the numerous biblical references and religious symbols in Cohen's song lead not to spiritual heights, but to Cohen's secularism. It is a bitter lament about love and loss'. Through Cohen's imagery, including references to some of the most notorious women in the bible, we find that the word "hallelujah," can mean so much more than just its religious context. "Hallelujah," the song teaches us, is a refrain worthy of times of celebration, of mourning, of regret, of catharsis, and reconciliation. Cohen's song tells a story of broken love, true love remembered and mourned, guilt, penance, and of finding peace in the vicissitudes of brokenness-themes with a myriad of applications and dimensions.

A lot of people think it's religious, because it uses Biblical imagery. Since churches sometimes sing it (and often change the lyrics a bit) and PTX put it on their Christmas album, it is perfectly understandable that people make that mistake. It is not religious. It's about the end of a very toxic relationship. The hallelujah is bitter and sarcastic. Cohen was a practicing Jew and he did write a few religious song, in particular "If It Be Your Will" and I think "Who By Fire" could be considered religious, as well, but remember it is not a Christian song.

@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 given the fact that the verse you are referring to isn't included in this or many of the dozens of re-writes that have been done to Cohen's original, I'd say that changes the meaning of the song. You are talking about: Well there was a time when you let me know what's really going on below but now you never show that to me do you? But remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too and every breath we drew was Hallelujah? Please stick with the song you are hearing, not the song you may know.

This is actually NOT a gospel song. In fact, it's almost the direct opposite of a gospel song. This song was written by Leonard Cohen, who was a Jewish-born atheist who had also experimented with Buddhism at one point is his life. The song was written about lost love, lust, sex, longing, loneliness and isolation, using intentionally mixed Biblical metaphors to tell the story. Cohen NEVER intended this to be a religious song at all. In fact, some musical historians have referred to it as Cohen having an argument with God. Now don't get me wrong, it's one of the greatest songs ever written, and additional verses were written over the years that had more religious or Christian meanings, and even a full-out Christmas version. But this is Cohen's original lyrics and should not be described or performed as a gospel song. Pentatonix planned this for the Christmas album they were recording at the time using the Christmas lyrics. When they contacted Cohen for permission to record the song, he would only give them permission if they used his original lyrics. They recorded it that way and still put it on the Christmas album. BTW, Pentatonix is not a gospel group, although they have done a few legitimate gospel songs (such as Amazing Grace) and about half of their output is Christmas songs (they put out a new Christmas album every year). They are considered primarily a pop/dance a cappella group.

Don't take this as any sort of criticism... is more of a very confused question... You sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in church? .... Why? Cohen was a Jewish-born, self-avowed atheist who wrote this song in 1984 using intentionally mixed Biblical references and metaphors to tell a story of lust, sex, adultery, lost love, loneliness & heartbreak. The verses that both Kirsten and Mitch sing make it pretty obvious that this isn't in any way a religious song. Example (Mitch's verse): Well, maybe there's a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who has seen the Light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

I'm guessing the church you sang it in didn't really listen to the lyrics. It's not even a religious song. Granted, many people say they feel God when they hear it, but I don't think being a stalker who watches a sunbather on her roof is very Godly. Then being tied to a kitchen chair and tortured? Really? Lmao Funny that it"s part of the Pentatonix "Christmas Collection".

No, it’s not a Gospel song. Leonard Cohen the songwriter was Jewish. You posthumously converted him.

This is not a church song and these are not bible stories.... sorry to disillusion you. do not know any church that would sing about learning how to "shoot someone who out drew ya".!!!

Sorry to tell you that you don’t have the Right yet to decide if am disillusioned, the first verse was obviously influenced by king David in the Bible who sang different beautiful Psalms to the Lord, the second verse was influenced with the story of Delilah and Samson whose hair was his strength and Delilah seduced, him tied him to a chair and from shaving his hair she took away his strength i could keep going but am not about to make you change your mind am here to defend my belief and it stays so. Sorry if it isn’t pleasing to you but we can all coexist in this world without having to tell someone what to believe. All 💞

@@symplytraciereacts As usual religious people only focus on the words and completely ignore the meaning.

@@-Devy- evidently you are including the artists themselves in that comment because they included the song on a Christmas album... She has every right to interpret the song as she wishes without your condescension and bigotry.

The only way to think that this is a "gospel song" is to not actually read the lyrics.

You mean to not UNDERSTAND the lyrics it’s two different things darling and understanding depends on my mindset, that is totally personal that’s why there’s something called misunderstanding, I make a statement with your present mindset you understand it the best way for you but it doesn’t mean that was how I meant it. No offends taken tho, and no offense meant.
