In this lesson we'll discuss the challenges and methods of starting synchronous motors including ramping up excitation frequency using motor drives, amortiser or damper windings, and pony motors. Additionally we'll explore some of the coordination and protection mechanisms inside a DC exciter circuit and examine the operation of components like the field discharge resistor, the field contactor and field discharge switch, the polarized field frequency relay (PFFR), out of step relay (OSR), and loss of excitation relay (LOE). (Part 2 of 2)

Question: In previous lectures on motors, inrush current is suppressed by the RPM of the rotor due in CEMF, is this because of the magnetic field in the rotor suppressing the current??? Like a ballast, maybe?
