Even though it was frustrating for our mum with trying to look after our family during the power cuts, we done our best to keep smiling and get on with things. My older brother and myself used to keep us both occupied by making shadows on the back living room wall from the light given from the flames of our then coal fire. The tragic thing I can remember was my school friend Sonia, with whom got badly burnt when her nylon nightie caught fire from the flame of the candle that was lit in her parents house. It was in to the local Coventry Evening Telegraph.

One great thing about living in California in 1972, the only time there was power outages was down to earthquakes or simple faults. Bad weather was not the norm. Sunny, warm and bright was the order of the day. Many seeing these reports on the US networks news programs where shocked at what they thought a modern country of Britain had become.

We were a failed socialist country.

My teenage years! God above, what a crappy little socialist country we were. Industry and economy perpetually in crisis. Ugly unions forever on strike. And all because we lurched violently left in 1945 and voted Labour/Attlee when the rest of the world was embracing capitalism and mass production.

No wonder so many British people emigrated to America. Move to California, where it was warm and sunny all year round

@Pollywog Most kitchens here in LA use gas cookers, so no need for electricity. Also union strikes at our power company was and is unheard of. Power workers at SCE which operates the power supply to Los Angeles and southern California never went on strike, and blacked out the state in the seventies. Even during the oil crisis, power remained on. We did have problems with the manipulating of energy prices which caused blackouts in 2000, that was down to market prices, and not strikes.
