Gowon wanted to keep the country together, Ojukwu wanted to destroy for his own personal gain. Since his coup to take over Nigeria with several other Igbo generals failed, he tried to grab hold of as much land as he could and like most corrupt Nigerian politicians, he did it under the veneer of tribalism. I don't get how Nigerian will say "shine your eye" and still think these politicians who constantly throw you under the bus somehow like you because you can speak the same language as them.

The first blow was struck on the 15th of January 1966 when almost an entire generation of thinkers and people qualified to lead our country were killed like dogs in the street. I am sorry if this offends but you can not build anything great from such a brutal and catastrophic event. Everything that took place after that was bound to happen. The military do not belong in the political arena. They are not qualified and it violates the constitution of any civilised country. Ojukwu, Gowon etc should have chosen either the gun or civilian life to make a difference. You can't have both. What would you say to people who effect significant change in this world without firing a single round and killing their own brothers? Nigeria has never recovered from the choosing to rule by the gun. Secession was never a viable economic option for Nigeria and neither was the civil war. Period. It would have been the death of the rest of all our people. Every military ruler and so-called well intentioned politician comes in under the pretence of addressing injustices and cleaning up corruption only to replace what was there before with something worse. There is a difference between a man fighting for justice and a man that has achieved his aims sitting in his office with a bloated belly. Do not worship these people like they gods and do not make heroes out of anyone. They almost led all our people to destruction. The real heroes are the ordinary people who still love their country despite that shameful episode in our history. I am tired of listening to generation upon generation breathing life into an illegal and an unjust war that resulted in mass killings on both sides and shamed our race. I am Yoruba and I have many cousins from the east and we celebrate the ethnic diversity in our family. We are all brothers and sisters and we should respect our humanity which is more important that any ethnicity, country or flag. Some of these people that are being hero worshipped did not step foot in Ibo land till their 20's. Most of them were born in the north and were from privileged backgrounds as well as being stooges for the British who had bad bele after being being thrown out of the country in 1960. Fight for your name and fight for your family. Forget about these so-called leaders that never missed a meal.

"A formal declaration of the Northern Region's secession was narrowly averted Monday August 1, (1966) when Col. Gowon was elevated to power in Lagos. Lt. Col. Gowon had prepared a radio address proclaiming the North's intention to break away from Nigeria but was dissuaded by the Yorubas in the army. Appeals to Gowon for restraint from northern secession were also made by several ambassadors from Western nations, especially Britain. Although Gowon was dissuaded from the secession, he did declare that it seemed to him to be "no basis for Nigerian unity, which has been so badly rocked, not only once but several times." ---- New York Times Wednesday August 3, 1966.

Don't twist events and stop standing historical facts on their head. The fact is, Biafran troops merely marched through the Midwest on their way to Lagos before the saboteurs stopped at Ore. The objective was not a conquest but rather to force Mr Yakuprevaricating Jackpot Gowontler to the peace table, to call off the oil war of genocide. You have conveniently forgotten that it was the Nigerian 2nd Division under the command of Mr Murderoustala Ramrod Mohammed, assisted by Messrs IBM Haruna and Ibrahim Taiwo, that ordered the massacres of the white flag waving civilians for committing no sin other than being Igbo. You all keep alluding to Ojukwu s greed. You forget that his father was Nigerias first self made millionaire, for which Sir Odumegwu was knighted. His son, young colonel was Sandhurst trained, understood economics, he needed the oil money from his homeland to defend his people, allowing access to this revenue to the Federal Government was his major failure, especially after Aburi accord which the Federal government ignored. Without gunboats all Biafrans were sitting ducks to be slaughtered by British aided Naval blockade through starvation. The only credit I give Gowon is that he chose this more humane method, but he later went on to embezzle $40million and bought house in Britain while still a student in his late thirties, there. Colonel Ojukwu never stole oil money and no Biafra born Army officers did. Almost all the northern military leaders stole money starting from Gowon, through Abacha, etc. Some got creative and called their loot "Rural Electrification " ,I personal ly lost my paychecks to Babangidas greed when he cut salaries.
