(7 Jul 1978) This week, Malawi is celebrating the 14th anniversary of its independence and the 20th anniversary of President Hastings Kamuzi Banda's return from 38 years of self-imposed exile in Britain and Ghana. Malawi, the former british protectorate of Nyasaland was made independent in 1964 after British attempts to include it in a federation with Zambia, (then northern Rhodesia) had failed. Banda is not only life-president, but also life-president of the ruling Malawi Congress Party. He is also his own Minister of Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Public Works and Justice
