Thank you for this, and I'm good up until 06:33 when you go into network and dsm settings. I don't seem to have a dsm settings tab? Did something change with DSM 7 please Edit: Found it. Now in Control Panel > Login Portal. Might be worth a sticky comment that lets people know. Thank you.

@SpaceRex Thank you for all of your videos. I am new to the NAS world and I am learning quite a bit. In terms of security, I know keeping router ports closes is a sure way to keep my system safe. My use of DS220+ is only to sync photos from several smart devices in my home between these devices and the NAS. In order for IOS apps to work (photos app), will I need to have quick connect or DDNS set up for it to work? Thank You!

quickconnect = UDP Hole Punch, not all networks will work on this connection specially if the end/client device is on a cellular network. proper port forwarding = you need todo some port forwarding and ddns setting, this will always work on any type of networks for as long as you have internet connection. as you see in this video, the port forwarding is not done on the router it self, the reason is the router his using is having UPnP enabled, which is by default is insecure, most routers now a days (specially for router-modem combo that is provided by ISP) have this option disabled by defaults so you might need to dig to your router's manual how to enable it. or you can just port forward it on your own which is recommended.

I like your videos but your viewers should note that just because you CAN expose your NAS to the Internet doesn't mean you should. I would recommend not using the port-forwarding methods shown here, and always connect to your home using a VPN (e.g. OpenVPN or whatever your router supports). Once you're connected, you can then access your NAS securely as if you were on the local network.

I've created a certificate through Let's Encrypt, and was following along with this video (love the videos, btw), but I ran into a problem when we got to 6:35, applying the certificate settings in the Control Panel > Network > DMS Settings step. On my end, (DSM 7.1.1-42962), there is no "DSM Settings" tab in my Control Panel/Network area. There is only "General", "Network Interface", "Traffic Control", "Static Route", and "Connectivity". I did a search in DSM for "DSM Settings", and it came up with no results.

Love your videos. Have you updated this under DSM 7 yet? My suggestion, discuss the pros and cons more fully between Quickconnect and Synology DDNS. I am struggling with the speed of access to their photostation/photos apps and wondering idf what you mention in this video regarding the quickconnect/DDNS access would also affect this. Also Synology has a bunch of DDNS options listed now, so maybe mention if the one we select is of any relevance or effect or if simply to aid us remembering. Lastly, if we opt for these, should we start looking at firewall rules? This could be a topic for a whole video actually. The risk of being hacked now is so scary.

Is there a method or a utility of diagnostics to identify if my router/port forwarding is the culprit? I've tried all of your suggestions except installing a VPN Server. Implemented many of your security suggestions from your other video. Quick connect seems to be activated properly but I still can't connect outside of my network. During the DSM process of: Ctrl panel/External Access/Router Config/Set up Router/check network connection scan - I get "no UPnP router was found..." No manufacturer is found when trying to set it up manually.. DSM 7, Synology diskstation 1520+ , AT&T | ARRIS / BGW210 router

Great video as always from you! Can you please give me your opinion for the following ... I set up a DDNS connection on my NAS, I used the DynDNS service, I created an SSL certificate with Lets Encrypt, I left only the HTTPS port from Synology open on my router which I changed from 5001 in another value, I set up the NAS according to your instructions from your NAS device security video. Everything works great, I can connect from outside to my NAS and I have a secure SSL connection. My question is how secure am I in this way of connecting from outside because I don’t use a VPN? My second question while I'm on my local network when I connect to a NAS device via IP address is that my SSL certificate is not active as far as I can see because the padlock in the address bar on the internet browser says that the connection is not secure and I wonder if it is a security problem and if so, can I create another SSL certificate when I connect from my local network to the NAS? Thank you in advance for your reply :)
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 3 жыл бұрын
So the external access security really comes down to how good your password are. 2) unless your router supports NAS loopback you will always get that SSL error. This is because you are using the IP of your NAS to get to your NAS. And you cannot get an SSL cert for a local IP

I would be concerned about opening up Ports on your router and the use of Port forwarding. I think setting up a VPN into a PC on your Network where you can then access your Data is safer. Security is an entirely different relm than NAS. This guys is great but I would make sure your router is a good one , I recommend a Watch Guard. I would like to hear form others about this because they may have more security background than I .

So, I followed this instruction for DDNS and the signed certificate instructions you've also uploaded, very straight forward, easy to follow with your help. However, when trying to use say, DS File, on my cellphone (while not on the local network), quick connect works but the direct connect option using the *.synology.me hostname just does not work. My router has upnp disabled (by choice), but port forwarding is easy. I chose a different set of ports to use, which I won't disclose here. My NAS is set to a static IP and I've only forwarded the chosen HTTPS port to the NAS ip. @SpaceRex any ideas? Any other ports I need to open? In DSM, the DDNS status reports "Normal".

Will using VPN to access or upload/download data make it more secure?

VPN access will almost always make you more secure (assuming you are self hosting)

@@SpaceRexWill Thanks. Can i clarify, the best and somewhat secure way to sync my home nas to my offsite nas (in my brothers house) is 1) Use VPN for both of my nas to connect with each other and 2) encrypt only the files which i deem as sensitive. (so photos/videos will not be encrypted during sync while financial data files will be encrypted during sync - can this be done?). Can the syncing be done automatically but ensure that my backup nas wont delete files incase i mistakenly deleted a file in my home nasdeoxit? Thanks.

okay, so I just watched your other video explaining how to access the server from finder in your Mac. My question is, how can I access my server from anywhere in the world from finder on my Mac? This way I don't have to open a website and its always integrated into my files.

You are going to want to setup a VPN server (I have tutorials for that). Then you would be able to connect back and access the share over SMB as if you were local

If you do not have a upnp router you are going to have to set up port forwarding manually. google "port forwarding {your router name}" and forward the ports you need to the IP of your router

Why does my url mydomain.synology.me redirect me to my router login page after setting this all up? I set up DDNS, am using a certificate from LetsEncrypt as the default, and followed all your instructions. NOTE - the only thing I couldn't do was check the box to redirect http connections, because my Network Settings does not have a DSM Settings tab.
@Dadinator28
@Dadinator28 3 жыл бұрын
I figured it out. The redirect http box is now in another section, and I also had to add port fwd on my router. The setup on the NAS seemed to actually make the change on my router config, but I guess it doesn't actually change anything on the router itself.
