I'm totally lost with all the models out there and can't decide which one to buy. Would really appreciate it if you can help me to decide in which is the best Synology for a freelancer video editor. I need it to edit straight from the NAS. 2 bays would be good for me with an option to expand if needed. Thanks in advance!
@GeekStreet3 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean, they are all very similar difference it mainly performance. You will be fine with the DS220+ I've used the older version for a number of years now for video editing no issues, just buy really large disks. Expansion wise you could just buy another unit after 3 year and use the existing as a archive one.

Beware, that 1Gb network is a limiting here, so you would get less speed, than from the disks inside your PC. It might be a factor for 4K editing. If it is, you would be better off choosing a model with a 10Gb network connector (you will also need a 10Gb network adapter in your PC and 10Gb home switch). Also in any case, you would need a separate backup place - either an external cloud or another box (at the very least - an external HDD connected via USB to the NAS).

How secure is the remote access to the NAS? Were there any hacks known? And how to make nas more secure than it is?
@Jonteponte712 жыл бұрын
QuickConnect is less secure than running a VPN server on the machine. Since the attack surface is known (the domain). But there is a whitepaper on it written by Synology if you want to know the exact details. Running your own VPN is obviously more complicated but doable. When exposing the NAS to the internet, the most imortant thing to do is close it down and not have any ports open that you are not using. And also make sure you have strong passwords. There are also a few security hardening options you can enable in DSM as well. Synology have been better than other reacting to vulnerabilities so far.

From DSM 7 there is an app called Synology Drive that does what you are asking.

Streaming 4K isn't an issue at all with 100mb/s. There is no cpu power needed. Even my clouds and j models can do this without any issues, just sayin, if this is main prio for a nas like those.

Great walk through. Questions: Does the media server allow for playing ISO files?
@GeekStreet3 жыл бұрын
Thanks not as far as I'm aware.
@nickthequick3 жыл бұрын
@@GeekStreet thanks for the swift reply, I didn't expect that! One more then: Can I install VLC player app directly on the NAS and play from there directly to the smart TV? My issue is I have 5x1 Tb of ISO files (previously bought DVDs that I have ripped nearly 10 years ago - yes it took a long time) on three different NAS that I want to consolidate onto something more uptpdate. Right now I must connect the laptop via HDMI to the TV and I am looking to avoid having to do that.
@mauriciolazo3 жыл бұрын
@@nickthequick as far as I know, there is no way to stream ISO from NAS to a Smart TV. It's mostly because the Smart TV can't understand the info stored in the ISO and can't mount that disk file. The only way I could think it may work is to use something like a Raspberry Pi with a Linux desktop running, install VLC and from that VLC try to open the network directory of the ISO files. Synology NAS, Plex, Jellyfin and other media servers can only stream video or audio files from any codec, but can't stream ISOs because of how that format stores information.

Hi there one question: I have an HDD with so many photos already stored and one empty HDD. How should I install them into NAS device by not losing any info in the first HDD and have it mirrored to another one securely? Thank you.
@mariuszpl883 жыл бұрын
I believe that you should make a backup of the photos to usb or computer. Yes I know it sucks but I believe that if you install the hard drive inside the nas. Hard drive will be formatted by "default" it happens to any drives regardless empty or not.
@cenk823 жыл бұрын
@@mariuszpl88 Well, thank you for the answer. My method than can be like this: 1. Make a 1 HDD NAS with DS220+. 2. Second HDD with photos: Copy this one to the HDD inside NAS. 3. Insert the second HDD (with photos) to NAS and unfornutanely it will be formatted too. 4. Make a Raid 1 with 1st (with photos) HDD and 2nd HDD (now empty). 5. At the end of this process, I should have 2 HDDs with Raid 1 system.
@Justcuz992 жыл бұрын
@@cenk82 no. That won't work. As someone stated, copy the photos from the HDD to your PC or an external HDD. The take that original HDD with photos and the 2nd empty HDD and install them both into the NAS. They will be formatted and all data lost. Once the NAS is up and running copy the photos from your PC/external HDD to the NAS
