After watching Lon’s video on setting up a Synology 1019+, I bought one to use as a Plex server. It works so well that I bought a second unit for backup. However, I wish these units had 10GB Ethernet because I have had to restore my files (30TB+) on a few occasions (my fault, not Synology’s). As I recall, that process took about three days. One of the best things about these NAS units is Synology’s customer support. Each time I called, I was able to speak with a human within a couple of minutes, and that human was able to resolve my issue. FYI, I am not a paid spokesman for Synology.

It's probably just fine in first world country, but as for me who lives in Indonesia, looking for spare parts especially their Server Rack lineup is a nightmare, as in it doesn't exist. I still don't understand why they wont streamline their PSU and tier it based on power usage, so the customer didn't stuck with broken units just because PSU replacement is EOL. Instead of: " Sorry but your 2012 unit is EOL, we no longer provide support for it " How about. " Oh your DS1213313131 unit psu is dead, and sorry it's out of stock, but we have 200 watt PSU that compatible with your unit " That is much better deal rather than just throw away altogether.

The 10Gb ethernet would not move your files faster because you are limited by the read/write speed of your HDD's. Heck, your 30Gb would move in 30 seconds over a regular 1Gb connection if your HDDs could handle such a speed...

Thanks for the extensive test and reporting. I don't understand Synology's decisions with some of the recent models. Connecting a UPS via a single front USB port? A proprietary, optional 10 GbE interface, which with this model is really only beneficial with edge cases, but the two built-in Ethernet ports being 1 GbE and not 2.5 GbE? (Which would have been more than enough, not even considering the upcoming SMB multi-channel support.) Vendor-locking for drives with fantasy prices. The hardware is now so hampered that the software advantage can not compensate this anymore.

2 nos of 1 gbE? A single 2.5 GbE would do the job. Vendor locking drives, some reviews just pretend you have all the necessary HD without the extra huge amount of cost.

So after watching the live stream, I decided on getting the Synology DS1522+ I wanted the DS923+ but the extra bay gives more flexibility. I don't see myself ever using Plex but I could run Plex through an old laptop with it attached to the NAS as its source. So my Synology NAS will be here on Friday, I look forward to configuring it.

Bit the bullet and got 923+ (but used) - LOVE IT! Upgraded RAM right away to 32Gb (non Synology!! I can't afford Synology stuff, lol the prices are insane!) - didn't get any errors or anything, Nvme also got two Samsung 512gb. You can use them as cache or as a storage too (just have to google for a way)

Hi Lon, can you provide the link to the video you said you did explaining how to setup a NAS to replace all cloud services. Also do you explain how to make that possible; like how to transfer all your data from all specific cloud services. And automatic backups from various personal devices.

The arbitrary restrictions will cost them a lot of money. The gap between the NVME drive and the cover plate looks to be enough for a drive with a heatsink if needed. For thermals, they could simply list their design TDP. For the same price of their 400GB drive, you can get a 2TB WD SN770 which has significantly higher performance specs, while being a mid range performance drive (passively cooled with no extra heatsink). Furthermore, even over 10GbE it is unlikely to saturate the writes or reads of the SSD, and one area that many mid range drives are heavily optimized for, is a low power state for non-demanding workloads (often a well below a watt). This is also why you can take even high end SSDs that are power hungry, and safely use them in a USB 3.2 10Gbps enclosure, they simply never get a workload heavy enough to bring them to their highest power state, thus they can be used when copying your OS over to a new SSD using an enclosure. Aside from that, all current major branded NVME SSDs will throttle if they get too hot.

I've heard in DSM 7.2 you can use any NVME you like for storage.

An extra $150 to go faster than 1Gbps in 2023 is shameful. The AMD R1600 is Zen 1 from 5 years ago. Really cheaping out as much as possible.

is that hard drive encrypted? I mean if we pull out the hard drive and using external hard drive Enclosure, can we read the disk via laptop/PC ? I concern about security here...

Thanks for the great video on this NAS. My brother is looking to upgrade to a Synology NAS for his Plex server and I'm helping to research models. I was wondering how this CPU would handle Plex with a HDHomerun for DVR? Would it have problems with the recordings? If so, do you have a recommendation on a different NAS model? Thanks.

I should have waited to have the integrated GPUs on the Ryzen like Intel did before switching thank you for doing this video I knew it was going to be like that but I'm glad I didn't go with them yet and I'm still using my WD My cloud PR 4100 with no problems two of them upgraded to 16 gigs of RAM and Corsair ML120 fans pro series and thermal grizzly thermal paste on the CPUs

Well all of those "proprietary" RAM and SSD requirements just turned me away from Synology. What they should do is make a list of qualified RAM and SSDs like motherboard manufactures. I'm also surprised Synology is still putting 1 Gbps ethernet ports on new models instead of 2.5 Gbps ports. QNAP has been putting 2.5 Gbps ports on most (possibly all) of their new units for a couple years now.

Lon, are you able to set up jbod instead of a raid configurations on the synology? I have the synology ds220j with 2 bays? I have two 1tb each samsung evo 860 sata ssd installed on my synology nas but for some reason in the settings to adjust the settings for raid, when I try to change the raid to jbod format, it's greyed out and it won't let me change the format since I wanna use jbod instead of using any raid configurations. I wanna be able to use my synology with a non raid configurations that way I have full access to 2tb on the synology instead of 1tb each other for redundancy. I would like to be able to use kodi and vlc that way I can access my video library uncompressed iso video format. For my music I have a mix library of 16 bit wav 44.1 khz uncompressed and 24 bit 96khz flac lossless. It's cool that synology added support for nvme, I wish that synology would allow full support for high capacity nvme from sabrent with 8tb instead using synology nvme but I understand why they dont do that to prevent overheating. I wish the stock fans could be replaced with brown and beige noctua fans on the any nas including synology since they would be completely silent plus the added benefit of cooling. I could definitely use 2 sabrent nvme with 8tb each and have 16tb of nvme with 8tb of using each nvme independently from each other and being able to use 16tb of storage instead of 8tb each compared to raid. I still buy movies in blu ray and 4k but I try to buy every movie in 4k since 4k is my preference of choice and for my music, I still buy cds, casette tapes but I'm still looking for mini discs from vintage stores and places like goodwill. I have a sony walkman portable cassette player, sony walkman portable disc man cd player and sony walkman mini disc portable player.

So i bought DS723+ and 2x WD Red SN700 NVMe 4TB. I see ill have to buy another 2x 4TB HDD to use it? And what about 10GB adapter? Should i order it too? Thanks

I'd really be interested in the reason they switched to Ryzen. If they just got a good deal on the CPU, if they really wanted ECC support and/or they have some data suggesting most people are not buying their nases for hw transcoding. I think they're gonna lose a lot of the Plex crowd to their competitors if they don't come up with at least 1 N5105/N5095 alternative, but I'm just speculating. I'm not against them selling their own validated hdd/ram/nvme for people that don't want to mess with what they need. But they are completely gouging their customers on prices of this hardware.

The more I see reviews of these things the more anti-NAS I become. You're already $400 in just for the box, but then they have to nickel and dime you for proprietary upgrades? I'm not buying the thermal excuses, if that was really a concern and they tested other drives why not have a list of drives that are safe? Same for the RAM, why not publish a whitelist of safe modules? I highly doubt every single SSD and RAM module they tested caused issues. This bs is why I will always recommend people to educate themselves and build their own unit. There are easy turnkey solutions like TrueNAS, unRAID, OpenMediaVault, Rockstor, Amahi Home Server, and many more.

You are right but considering building my own brings so much issues with it, you have to find the perfect board, deal with all the setup and especially when it comes to ECC ram and amd it’s so unclear what works and what not. Then getting old cpus that support it, yet getting old mainboards and need to rely on those if they ever break. And given that pricing point I‘m well beyond 500$ with old used hardware. I wished they had some stronger cpu on this one, and the upgrades are rude. But it’ll probably be my best choice when only considering ecc options.

@@kev9720 My brother in Christ it's not that serious. You can build a respectable NAS for under $300 that will wipe the floor with these NAS devices. You don't need ECC RAM, and even if you desire ECC just go with a platform that uses DDR5 which has on-die ECC which is really all you're going to need for a home solution. Plus, and here's the main benefit, when your home built NAS dies you can just transfer the drives to a new build. That's not a guarantee with NAS devices, just look at Drobo for example, they used a proprietary storage layout that means if your Drobo dies you're boned, all your data is lost, unless you can find an exact model you have to slide the drives into. I think it's this fear that rolling your own is too complex that these companies rely on to sell these overpriced underpowered NAS devices.

I would've expected actual power measurement at the wall done idle/load with/without 10Gbe card Also disappointing that synology is hiding behind heat issues to sell their nvme As it stands it may look like a good price but 1. No hardware transcoding 2. Non synology nvme can only be a cache but it makes zero difference without the $150 add-on card because a spinning drive or at worst 2.5" ssd will saturate the 1gbe link 3. With the add-on the systems comes up to $600 which is ridiculous given the specs

They need to reduce the price of their 10 GbE NIC. Back in early 2017 the Asus XG-C100C came out for $100, and would often go on sale for around $80-90. and that was using the overpriced Aquantia AQC-107. In the 6 years since, the cost of 10GbE has come down, especially with many more companies making controllers. It is hard to understand why they are choosing a $150 price point. If anything given their propitiatory interface, they should reduce the cost to like $50 or less and turn it into a selling point for the NAS by advertising a cost effective way of moving to 10GbE.

Kingston do some ECC ram that works with these. A fraction of the price of the Synology so-dimms! Buy Synology at your peril, there's no valid reason for limiting NVME storage to Synology branded drives. They stick their labels on someone else's and multiply the price! It should be illegal.

@n n To be honest I was multitasking and didn't phrase the comment well. I'll try to explain. 1) Synology won't honor the warranty if you use other manufacturers RAM. That suggests to me there may be compatibility issues and I don't want to be forced to buy ram from them. They might not have the parts I need when I need them. We've all experienced problems during the chip shortage. Sometimes we must substitute parts to get systems up in a timely manner. 2) Synology said the NVME was an issue because of thermals and we must use their NVME sticks to get all features. That suggests they may not have designed solid heat regulation. Once again I need the freedom to use any high quality replacements. 3) AMD is a different issue and has nothing to do with the RAM or NVME. Hardware transcoding is important to many of us using Plex. As Lon demonstrated AMD can't do that. That's why Intel is important. I actually like AMD but not on my Plex server because of those limitations. A NAS isn't like a workstation because many computers in the network rely on it. It has to be rock solid with high availability. If something breaks I need the option to go to my local electronics supplier so I can get it back in service quickly. Make sense now?

Just get OWC's Thunderblade and get over 2000MB/sec. Also BM speed test is not reliable, use Aja.

Holding features behind artificial brand locks so they can sell you overpriced ram and ssds has solidified my choice to not use Synology for my next NAS unless they reverse this anti-consumer tactic. This ryzen 2 core chip with no hardware encode/decode is insulting for the price as well. This is a downgrade from my older 4 slot unit.

I’m a big Synology fan but I feel Synology are going backwards using AMD. Forcing the consumer to buy Synology nvme drives for the privilege and gradually locking down their NAS with each release. Very Apple!

This fails full stop with that poor cpu since it fails at hardware transcoding. Right now it's the QNAP TS-264. Synology basically seems to be leaving the non business space in my opinion. this is a nonstarter.

Not pleased to see Synology going vertical and favoring their own white label hardware. I most likely won't be buying the brand again when my 218 gets long in the tooth. I just want a good NAS that supports a wide selection of storage brands EQUALLY. Their excuses are just complete bullshit.

Greedy Synology. How can they overprovision cheap Phison E12 512GB to make 400GB, and charge $149 on it? I can buy a high end 2TB at that price in 2023.

I had problem about my synology nas And Steve Baker Technical Support Engineer write me about my problem that We are sorry to hear that your DS218 has to be reset. This is likely caused by an issue in the DSM operating-system. We understand that you are worried about losing your data. Please rest assured, your data should not be affected by the reset as the OS and data are stored in separate partitions on the drives. When re-installing the OS, the system should normally not touch the data-partitions of your drives. I beleived and i did what he said now all my data erased omg i shocked after sir Steve Baker dissepeared i am alone there is nothing in my hands Synology is regret bad nas choose qnap there isnt good support for problemss !!! Synology is big regret
