I second all the earlier comments, excellent video. One thing that you should probably have emphasised is that (AFAIK) the format of the backed-up files does not correspond 1:1 to that on the Synology. That is, if you backup to a local USB drive, and try to directly read the USB contents by attaching the drive to a PC, you cannot directly read the backed-up file contents. In other word, to restore, you always have to use Hyper Backup to restore the files. It also means that you cannot use Hyper Backup to migrate the files to another non-Synology NAS.

Useful tutorial thank you, I'm struggling to understand the nuance of the rotation settings especially the custom retention settings & their implications on storage requirements. More detail on this would be great! Though I have found simply experimenting with the Custom Retention settings, including the Max Number of Kept Versions and flipping between the Month/Year timescale on the visualisation, is really useful for helping to understand it
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
In general, it's hard to get a true understanding because it's hard to estimate the storage space it'll actually need. For example, if you have a 1GB file that you delete off your NAS, if the Hyper Backup retention settings are set to keep it, it'll store the full 1GB because you might have to restore it at some point. I'd view it as a culmination of ALL data, present and recently deleted. When the retention finally hits its max, files previously deleted will slowly start to be removed.

I had recently factory reset my synology nas. I would like to restore from google drive but I'm not sure what to do during setup, do I select "download remote changes only" or "bidirectional," I am terrified of selecting bidirectional. Would that sync my empty drives (since it was factory reset) to google drive, thereby wiping my data?

Great video and very informative as always! What would you recommend as a backup strategy for the docker containers? Losing them would be a nightmare and being able to restore them fully and quickly is a must. Thanks for your insights on this.

I would recommend backing up the docker folder (where all of the configurations exist) and ensuring that's kept safe. As long as it is, you can recreate the container with the content in that folder.

I think I just answered my own question, sort-of. I was browsing around in File Explorer, and investigated my external back drive (where my backups are performed to) and realised that I could locate my accidentally-deleted file, and restore it to my desktop. It seems to be an alternative way to the Backup Explorer. I didn't realise before today that I can directly browse the contents of my backup drive, and selectively restore files that way.

great vid, I was just looking for such coverage recently :D one question - what happens if the target backup device (external HDD, another NAS etc...) available capacity is lower than needed? I understand there is no easy way to see/calculate storage needs for "compressed" backups with rotations (to choose appropriate device capacity), as it would by no means match the source folder/share size?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I believe that you'll get an error inside of Hyper Backup informing you that the media doesn't have enough storage space. The issue is that I don't think the backup will inform you until it actually runs out of space.

Thanks. Just started my first BU. Question: this BU is going to an USB drive that has been attached to my PC and contains some data. Now that it is connected to the NAS and is the Hyper destination, will that existing data be erased? And is there a way to see all data on the USB drive, (ie File Explorer), giving a view of everything on the drive, not just the BU data?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
If you didn't format the drive, then no, the data that was already there will still be there. With the USB drive hooked up to your NAS, open File Station (inside DSM) and you should be able to see the USB drive (I think it will be called usbshare1). You can then navigate through the USB drive and delete anything you might not need.

Good video as always. Just what i needed. I wonder if you could make a video on how to automatically to renew certificates with Synology in combination with Cloudflare. I don't know if you know the problem with cloudflare but if you use cloudflare it is difficult to renew letsencrypt certificates if you use the built in Nginx tool of your Synology NAS.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
I will add this to my list! As far as the certificate renewals, I know using Cloudflare makes creating certificates difficult if you're using Cloudflare's proxy service. If you uncheck that, renew it, then recheck it, it should work as designed. With that said, I was always under the impression that it only had to be done for certificate creation and not renewals. I will look into it when I get some time!

How safe would you say that Synology’s encryption with password is? I’ve read many people encrypting their WD external drives via WD software, and getting locked out despite entering the correct password. Any chance of that happening here or what’s the reliability like?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Truthfully, I don't think that anyone can really say if it is/isn't entirely secure without having a third-party run a security audit. By design, without the encryption key/password, no one can access it - sadly, that's the best answer I can provide. I know it's not the most helpful and I apologize for that.

Hello, thank you very much for this great video! is it possible to make a backup, without necessarily having to follow 100% the synchronization process imposed by Hyper backup or Synology drive? Let me explain: I would like my main NAS to be able to back up files continuously to my backup NAS, so when I add a new folder, a new one, rename etc. on my Main NAS, the result is reflected automatically on the backup NAS. But on the other hand, when I delete a file / folder, I want this action not to be repeated on the backup NAS as well. The backup NAS is there in a way like a big host, which must take care only of keeping the files of the main NAS and not of making an identical copy. I hope to find some help from you, thank you!

In my case I do not want the two files to be kept identically. I wish : 1) that the first NAS make continuous backups on the second NAS 2) that when I delete files from the first NAS, I can always find them on the second NAS. I'm dying over here. Watched 3 pros go thru ALMOST every feature of hyper backup except the one I want now. I've used hyper backup to a ext drive. I want to be able to access the external HDD with my laptop when I need a file out in the field. Why does no one either say (if I'm incorrect) that you can not access your files from windows or mac if you encrypt them.... or give a tutorial on where to find program to install onto windows machine so I can unencrypt my files when I need something and I have ext HDD with me but am not at home with the NAS??????
