Hi there. Awesome vid. I wonder, if you can set this up for internal use only, so no need for external access, and still have it be able to sync with Outlook on the PC and and phone when I get back and access the LAN / WIFI
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
Hi Bell_NZ, Glad you liked the video!! Regarding your question, you should be able to setup the calendar for internal access only (just tried it). If you follow along with the video you'll just need to skip the DDNS and port forwarding portions and setup your client applications using the IP address of your Synology NAS instead. Hope this helps and best of luck in your setup!!

How about the tasks in Thunderbird? Now it seems that the Thunderbird or Synology does not support task synch between Synology server and Thunderbird over calDAV. At least I could not yet discover any method how to enable the task synch...
@Cantimule
@Cantimule 2 ай бұрын
How does this work when the DSM account has 2FA enabled? Since the CalDAV clients don't take that into account, I think that's why mine never works.

@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
@johnmoricone294 You're welcome!! Regarding your issue connecting to the web portal the only thing I can think of is that you may have the Synology NAS firewall enabled. That is the only thing I can think of that I didn't cover in the video. Hope that helps and best of luck in resolving the issue.

Hello, thank you for the nice tutorial. Now i have access from anywhere to my calendar, but not from my local network. 😅 I dont know why, because he can also go over the internet if i logged into my wlan. What can be the problem?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
Hi Traquil, You're welcome! I'm glad the video was helpful to you! Your issue really sounds like your router doesn't support or have loopback nat or hairpin nat turned on or enabled. To test try connecting to your calendar when on your local network using the internal IP address assigned to your Synology NAS. If you can connect to the Calendar I would check on the loopback nat or hairpin nat capabilities of your router and see if this could be enabled. Hope this helps and best of luck to you in your setup!

Hi. Can you please comment on the risks of port forwarding as you described in this?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, For sure... The port forwarding I'm describing here does expose ports 5000 and 5001, which are what Synology uses for HTTP and HTTPS, respectively. This does expose your Synology NAS to the wider Internet on those ports so there is risk of brute force attacks and vulnerabilities that could be exploited. A few things that I'd recommend are to make sure you use a strong password, keep up-to-date with any security updates and limit external access by creating firewall rules that limit who can access your Synology NAS. Another alternative would be to only allow access to Synology Calendar through a VPN connection. Hope this help and if you do have any further comments/concerns please let me know. Definitely interested in security related ideas/suggestions that I haven't considered in the past.

@@digital_aloha Thanks. I've been trying to figure out what is the best and been watching and reading a lot on the reddit site. Suggestions are to use the VPN server or even Tailscale but I'm still learning about this. I did try the DDNS approach last night and it worked perfectly but I didn't have to open any ports. I'll check that again to be sure.
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha Жыл бұрын
@@paulg9042 You're welcome! I do like the suggestion on using Tailscale. I use Tailscale all of the time and it works great. Also, I do have a video that covers setting up Tailscale, if you haven't seen it already, which should help you in setting things up if you go that route -> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rp2DicWcrcepkXU.html. Regarding your DDNS setup it seems weird to me that you didn't have to do any port forwarding to get it working. Could it be that you are connecting to your Synology Calendar from the local network and not remotely? If so, you may want to try connecting from a remote location and see if you still can connect properly.

Impressive, thanks! I'm a chicken to enable quickconnect. Doesn't that increase the chance of being hacked?
@digital_aloha
@digital_aloha 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Good Citizen, You're welcome! Regarding your question on quickconnect, I don't think it opens you up to being hacked, it is just that you need to put your trust into Synology's infrastructure and security. I also wouldn't use quickconnect if you plan to setup Synology Calendar (I have some issues when I tried it out). I do have a video on quickconnect if you haven't found it yet if you'd like to learn more -> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gpuRasdks7O6kqM.html. Also, an alternative to quickconnect, which I cover in this calendar video as well is DDNS and port forwarding. I have a video that specifically covers DDNS and port forwarding as well -> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ap17mMpqrsvMlH0.html. Hope this information helps and good luck in your setup!!

@chickennugget3362 Hmm, I use pi-hole (which should work similarly to adguard) and Synology calendar works great for me. I'm wondering if maybe the issue is with the firewall on your NAS. Maybe disable the firewall and see if that does the trick? Good luck to you!!
