I'm not too well versed in the field but knowing that your videos are being recorded locally and not being sent to a server farm is nice. Another +1 for being made in an allied country.

I would want my videos stored offsite. There are other options than the manufacturers servers, ie. a VPS you manage yourself

A Synology cam license is about $60. With a price of $219 the "theoretical" price without a license is $219-$60 = $159. You can get a really similar Reolink 4K camera w/SD card for about $85. Obviously it wouldn't be integrated as nicely with DSM/SS but auto-updating firmware isn't that big of a wow factor to warrant the premium. Maybe if the market price ends up settling around $150 this would be appealing. Finally, it wasn't entirely clear whether this camera works generically with non-Synology equipment (with fewer features, perhaps) but if it didn't that would be another negative in the event you wanted to sell the camera later or repurpose it. It will be interesting to see how the pricing plays out. With native integration with DSM/SS and an included license, the product seems interesting, but a $219 price quickly makes it less interesting. And finally, if you are ever only going to have one or two cameras connected to Surveillance Station (SS) then then this camera's built in license is really not needed and the effective price premium you are paying is even higher.

Great review! We have synology nas in all of our store locations and have been using HIK vision cameras but when I saw these were coming out and the license was included it definitely got my attention. Your review gave us the additional insight we needed. I think we will have to get some of the turret styles now when they come out.

I'm curious, you mentioned that you currently use Hikvision cameras with Synology NAS in all of your store locations. what has been your experience with this setup so far?😄

@@vikylin Hikvision has been a good camera for us. I like the mounting options they offer for outdoor installation. But they've never been super easy to work with as far as being able to make adjustments without doing into the cameras web interface, which is where I see it nice to be able to manage the camera all from within surveillance station. Also, with the crackdown on Chinese made cameras we were glad to see the synology cameras come up as an option. Its nice also to save $45 per camera with not needing a license. We had a number of Axis cameras go out after a couple of years but as far as reliability and good mounting options the Hikvisions are still a great camera.

I think this video is one of the most comprehensive when it comes to the Synology software and features, I found the explanations of the different functionality very useful. I have several Cameras hooked into my NAS, they are however Reolink. I did notice that a lot of the features spoken about, were not available on my Synology software so I can only assume they were specific to the Synology BC500 Camera in question. Really helpful video nevertheless, like &subscribed. - Neil (UK)

I have a TC on order and have been reading info in preparation for my install. I saw where the ferrule that an Ethernet connector won’t pass through is split and can be placed on the cable without having to pass the connector through. This will allow for a Ethernet cable with the connector installed to be used.

You should definitely give "Inutusion" a go vs just the AI motion detection. Looks to be a typical Tripwire setup, which in my experience is the absolute best way to not get false alarms from bugs, shadows, clouds, etc. Draw a few zigzag lines across crossing areas.

I ordered 4 of the BC500'slate on the 10th and they were shipped on the 11th. Right now the only place I've found where they are available is through the Synology store. I asked about the TC500's and they said they still don't have a release date in the US.

4 pack ss licence was 170 euro for me in a Christmas sale. Unfortunately doesn't make sense to buy synology brand cameras at that price. Nice idea, needs a price cut.

Is it possible to turn off the camera’s IR illuminator in Night Mode so that an external IR illuminator can be used?

Just installed a BC500. installation is so easy! BUT the image quality at the left and right 30% of the image is a bit BLURRY. My old Hikvision camera performs way better.

I really hope they don’t turn this into a walled garden. The way they have with drives and network adapters on their bigger NAS boxes.

Seriously, were do I leave the 18 feet of cable and bulky cable connectors when mounting these to a outside wall which has a 19mm pipe end with PoE cable coming out of it. Why not plug the ethernet cable directly in the back like a Ubiquiti or many others have. Also these specs for that price range? hmmm

Bugs are attracted to Infrared. Disable the Infrared on the camera and use a separate Infrared light in another location for that area. The bugs will go to the light instead of the camera

The pricing is really bad, especially considering that for the price, you are typically in the 4K range with optical zoom function, along with pan and tilt functions.

Oh thank God they required connection ethernet connection that means they can do continuous recording not like those battery ones The barrel connector though they should lose that Ethernet is the way to go if you're still using the other style then you might as well not even buy the camera in the first place

Ouch, yeah unfortunately for actual coverage of the area I'd want to secure I'd then be looking at over $1,000 - getting close to the value of any goods that might get stolen!

Im sorry but $200+ for these is a joke. Synology security system is a joke in 2023 its junk. Swap to Unifi protect way cheaper and amazing security features. Love the heat map and license plate reader. A g5 bullet camera is $129. Synology needs to get competitive with their pricing.
