I use 3 4K camera's and 4 1080P camera's and it holds up well. I have seen SS setup in small business with 8 plus cameras also. These are in a small business environment with what I would consider medium traffic, probably about 300 detections per camera per hour. I use a DS-918+ with 8GB RAM installed. I would not get too hung up on megapixels though. Location of install and focal length are more important than megapixels. 4K cameras are slightly better than 2MP when comparing domestic quality, but you would be better with an expensive, premium enterprise 2MP camera than a domestic quality 8MP camera if you want real quality, especially in low light conditions. Too many "makers" and tinkerers get hung up on megapixels and quite honestly, megapixels don't mean that much. A 4K camera in the 100 or less (USD) price range certainly does NOT have the quality of a 4K movie, yet the claim to be 4K. All depends what you want. A tinker toy or a professional system. I went of on a bit of a tangent there, but ultimately, yes SS can handle a decent number of hi res streams. If your camera's have smart motion events, using the motion events from the camera will allow a smoother performance and I would also recommend, if you go to higher camera numbers, you don't use the NAS for a lot of other functions. Of course, the way it holds up depends on the NAS you use. A low spec NAS will not run as well as a high spec NAS. Example. If you have something using an Intel or AMD CPU and 8GB plus RAM, you will likely run 20 plus cameras, even at 4K. If you use a lower end with 1GB or less ram and a weaker CPU then it may struggle at 4 to 8 cameras

@@EsotericArctos sorry I'm not getting reply notifications so didn't see this until now. Great points, I'm well aware of the specs that truly matter in a quality camera. "Chasing megapixels" as they call it. I do believe we're finally reaching a point however where the higher megapixel cams are approaching the "compromised" spec'd but higher performing sensors/optics setups of the past. Anyway I ultimately chose a DS920+, brought RAM up to 8GB and running a RAID-10 array with Skyhawk drives. As suggested this a dedicated NVR, and I'm using the AI/motion processing on camera for the best performance possible.

@@slip0n0fall That sounds like a great way to go. I use a 918+ with 8gb, and 2x 256gb M.2s as cache. Very similar performance to the 920+ with 10 4MP cameras. I went with 4 10GB WD reds as originally it was NAS storage, but now it is running flawless with SS I would expect you to have a very similar experience. 🙂

There are several Home Assistant videos around that have a similar thing. I wouldn't take a feed from Synology SS for Home Assistant. Take the feed direct from the camera. That will avoid delays.
