Those that survived the Great War inside the underground shelter known as Vault 11, had escaped nuclear Armageddon, only to be presented with another threat. Now that everyone was securely locked inside, the Overseer stepped forward and announced that each year, one of them would had to be sacrificed to satisfy the vaults mainframe, and if they didn’t then the entire vault would be destroyed. Hearing this confession enraged the survivors, their new home that had just saved them from sudden death was now, for some unknown reason, wanting one of them each year to take their own life.

I think if instead of killing the sacrifices they just kept them in a hidden portion of the vault, never allowed to see anyone else ever again (or until they decide to stop sending people) that it would've been exceptionally interesting. Like you have the one experiment where you're watching people sacrifice each other and then you have the other side where the people who were sacrificed realized it was all a sham but have no way of telling the people above.

The logs regarding the first overseer (or "first sacrifice") are honestly chilling. The thought of some leading figure (the overseer) being forced down a long passage leading to his death, wheeping all the way, just gives me a sick feeling. Horrific, yet brilliantly written, vault.

@@nextlvlroy, I’ve been thinking about that, I personally do believe that he knew exactly what the vault was for, the experiment that costed so many lives, he probably thought that it didn’t apply to him, so he didn’t care much, or he assumed that they wouldn’t sacrifice anyone, but as anyone should know, when we’re backed into an inevitable death, our true selves come out.

it somewhat lore friendly, like a lazy way to close off the experiment. i can imagine 2 vault tec engineers thinking about using gas or an electric chair, but realizing the gas might expire or leak, an electric chair requires maintainece and a vault dweller would have to manually go down there and reset the death machine, then why wouldn't the vault dweller disable device entirely? robots and a slide door seem to be the cheapest and laziest way to go about it since its going to take robots to remove the body anyways

I always visit this vault in my playthroughs of New Vegas because it's my absolute favorite. Also: the way the Vault-Tec "Happy Trails" slideshow ends with "Imagine what joys await you in the afterlife. Can you see them? Good." followed immediately by the screen shutting down and the doors sliding open to either side always makes my heart jump every time. And the fact that the recording for their refusal says "Here at Vault-Tec, your safety is our number one priority" is so absurd I always chuckle to myself because of how ridiculous that claim is, seeing all the other vault experiments as well as this one.

First time I saw this vault, I kept thinking there would be a secret section of the vault that the sacrifices were sent to live in, unable to communicate with the original side. That the two sides would be studied to see how the "sacrifice" side developed as a society. Would they be angry? Bitter? Or would they be relieved that they no longer had to live with this fear over their heads? I was a bit disappointed when I got to the end of the vault and found that the sacrifices were indeed killed.

Encountered this vault by chance just a couple of hours ago. Going in, I was excited considering I had pretty much nothing to do and was getting bored. Going out... I felt kinda hollow, man. There's been some pretty awful stuff I've seen in the wasteland, but I guess with how well this was shown through documentation and environmental storytelling it really hit home.

It's crazy how the developers structured the lore for this vault, you have to piece the story together on your own and thoroughly explore the place to find every bit of info This game came out 11 years ago and this is just a small fraction of what the game has to offer, idk it's just baffles me

My first thought about this vault was "What would happen when it was just a few people left?". My first reaction to the test was to just accept the immediate loss to avoid the fate of being the last 1 or worse last 2 and having to force the other down the vault without killing them.

This vault would be a great first episode for the new TV show as it would be a great introduction to the wasteland if a vault dweller that thinks that are a sacrifice wake up outside and looking at a super mutant vs a member of the legion

all things considered the vaults were only temporary homes, given a decade or two the outside world would be somewhat habitable again. So if you bought into the idea you had to sacrifice someone every year, there's enough people to slaughter for several decades.

That's essentially what vault tec had in mind from the start, a population that continues to sacrifice till they can no longer produce the numbers to sustain the cycle eventually they would have to swap partners in order to keep up with the demand, eventual inbreeding would happen along with them still killing off thier kind till they had some tribal understanding of killing off one per year, almost at if it was based off how the Aztecs would sacrifice for the sun god

Fun fact. The man with the gruff voice around 8:06 talking to Roy of the Justice Block is Steve Blum. He has voiced A LOT of people in games and cartoons. Including Spike Spiegel in Cowbow Bebop, Orochimaru in Naruto/Boruto, Wolverine in the X-Men cartoons/games and Capt. Bartlett in Ace Combat 5.

exploring your way through vault 11 and uncovering the story piece by piece is a masterclass in storytelling. beginning with the 4 bodies at the vault door and hearing the final holotape at the start, only to go through the twists and turns of uncovering the story bit by bit, then entering the chamber and seeing the dark turn of the death room presentation, blasting your way through survival, only to re-listen to the final tapes as you crawl back up towards the surface with all the newfound context of the vault's story. Haunting.

God the fact that they kept doing this until a huge fight broke out years later and we're left with 5 people really shows how uneasy these experiments are, especially if only the vault overseer knew, I just wanna know why they didn't just go against it from the get go, like there had to be SOME people against the idea of a sacrifice
