@BrokenCurtain4 жыл бұрын
There was that intro scene at the beginning where you saw a few corridors through security cameras and watched a woman huddling in a corner - and then some huge, hulking thing ran towards her before the view cut away. So when I finally managed to open that door leading from the intro area to the med/sci section, I hesitated and really didn't want to go, because I recognized those corridors. There was some big, hulking thing out there and all I had was a wrench. But then I walked through the door, the music started and I got attacked by the first mutant, almost giving me a heart attack. Ah, memories...

This may sound weird, but I feel this song...actually fits the horror theme & atmosphere, especially in the opening. Think of it, you just woke up from a cold sleep, you're in space, and EVERYTHING'S GONE TO HELL. You scramble to escape the decompressing room, and enter the main ship to find that it's been overrun with mutants, malfunction, and psychic monkeys thirsty for blood. And seemingly all of the alarms & sirens are going off at once. A quiet, suspenseful track wouldn't quite fit. This isn't a slow creep into a spooky derelict ship, this is a frenzy of trying to survive, and keep the ship from blowing up, while a million problems bite you at the same time. This isn't fear, this is *PANIC.*

Well but hey, you got a wrench? :) lol
@BigPuddin Жыл бұрын
There isn't an inherent horror theme to SS2. It isn't a horror game. It just has spooky elements. It's an first person action rpg dungeon crawler. That's why the song was chosen. Bioshock isn't a horror game either. Just because there are spooky elements in a game doesn't make it a horror game or even horror themed. By that argument, Dead Space would be an action game with a few horror elements. It's not. It's a horror game with action elements. The same could be argued of Half life 1 and 2. It would be a "horror game" due to the presence of horror elements despite being first person shooters exclusively. I don't blame people for being confused. They got spooked by the low poly mutants, and they were given erroneous first impressions. But this song is meant to be a blood pumping action theme for smacking mutants and psychic monkeys with your wrench, but the intro gave people the wrong impression. Hell, Bioshock leaned even harder into the "boo, scary" boogery, and it's the same kind of game as System Shock 2.
@nooneinparticular5256 Жыл бұрын
@@BigPuddin You make a good point that the game is mechanically a dungeon crawler. And horror is certainly a loose & subjective genre, sure. However, I would argue that horror as a concept was still a key factor in the game itself. It's a key component of the game's tone and atmosphere. At the start, it might have started out as a cyberpunk romp with a sense of urgency--much like System Shock 1. However, I feel that the horror elements are too blended into the core game's theme & atmosphere, for them to not be integral parts. It walks a fine line--similar to, say, Diablo 1. I know a lot of people go into it with the expectation of Silent Hill, and get thrown off by the techno. But I don't think the techno nor the dread should be dismissed.
@mikakeinanen8382 Жыл бұрын
@@BigPuddin I agree, if you only knew the only extent of your abilities, it would be a walk in the park. But you don't know, it is revealed to you, slowly in the progress of the game, and only in the pinnacle of the final fight, you will know that the extent of your abilities is infinite. Until then, it is a game of horror
@BigPuddin Жыл бұрын
@@mikakeinanen8382 No, man, it quite literally ISN'T classified as a horror game. It's not a subjective issue of "oh, it's scary when you're weak but strong it isn't." It's objectively not a horror game. It isn't classified as such. It never was. It has scary stuff, but it isn't a horror game.

When I picked up this at steam, I had high hopes for this. I hadn't played a good thrilling game for a while. When we talk about horror games these days, we mostly talk how gory the game is and how much the main character loses his mind, which tends to be boring at times. Not always (very often entertaining but not necessarily scary). I still remember when this soundtrack started playing and it still gives me good feel of excitement (and possibly makes me little nervous). There was constantly this feel of danger when operating machines and organizing my inventory. This game didn't want to momentarily scare the shit out of us and then let us go but instead kept the tension up all the time. I must admit that I'm not big fan of games this old but damn I have to say that ss2 will stay in my "games I loved" list. In my opinion horror is constant feel of terror that you cannot get over easily. Wow... This is bit messy opinion of mine... Apologies if something is bit unclear.

Your opinion was very clear and easy to understand and i agree with you with everythin you said. A lot of old games prove that graphics arent everyting! Wouldnt you agree?
@Valtremors9 жыл бұрын
marko simunic Definitely! But I guess it isn't the graphical quality that is important but the style of art, story and the soundtrack compatibility. Many games have kind of screwed up by putting different feelings into different parts of the game. What would you think about a protagonist whose wife has been killed and he is searching for the killer from the magical rainbow land where dubstep is playing in the background? Creating a correct atmosphere isn't a lost art but it is very rare these days.
@markosimunic47709 жыл бұрын
Valtremors And the gameplay! Lets not forget about the gameplay!
@Valtremors9 жыл бұрын
marko simunic That is a thing I often forget to mention. Gameplay is rather complicated thing... for some games very simplistic type works very well, some games have very absurd gameplay and there are also those which combine other types to create something new. Probably the hardest thing to nail properly in these days since it is extremely hard to come up with something fresh, new and practical.

ss2 scariness can be explained as paranoia type of fear. Wandering slowly,carefully, trough this long, dimly lighted and dark spooky hallways for hours, constantly turning around to check behind, fearing that danger can come at any moment at random, exposed to constant state of pressure and tension...a person's nerves can take only so much....until he runs into something nasty and loses it... @Spar118: As far as AIs gone wrong goes, SHODAN couldn't be more different from HAL. HAL has no emotion, SHODAN drips with arrogance, pride, and contempt. HAL has no ill will, he's just acting on faulty programming that says that the mission is more important than the people on it, and since the people are becoming a danger to the mission (which is all-important), the danger to the mission must be removed. SHODAN creates her own purpose and creates horrors and monstrosities because she can. HAL stops talking when there's no practical reason for him to keep talking, SHODAN goes out of her way to taunt you and let you know just how insignificant and lowly you are compared to her magnificence, even as you're acting as her agent.

Joshua Day Oh, very much so. XERXES and HAL are both victims of their programming, which allows them no choice but to kill the crew. The difference being HAL was just programmed poorly, while the Many actively mucked with XERXES' programming. All the more interesting that a lot of XERXES' messages (poetry reading, happy holiday season, etc.) make it seem like he doesn't comprehend what's going on at all, or that anything's changed in the slightest.

Bek359 Are you sure HAL had no emotions at all? If I recall correctly, HAL killed the crew, because he felt bad or something for having lied to them. Also HAL says flat out,"I'm afraid", when Dave is deactivating him. HAL was programmed poorly? That is not right at all. The HAL9000 series had 0% failure rate. Wouldn't make sense to send a poorly programmed AI on a lengthy, risky mission through space. However, you are right in that SHODAN shouldn't be compared to HAL.
@Bek3597 жыл бұрын
It's not that he felt bad about it, it's that he encountered a logic error. He was instructed to conceal the existence of the monolith from the crew by the powers that be. This conflicted badly with a lot of his other programming; he wasn't built to be deceptive. At all. He eventually resolved this conflict by deciding that if there was nobody to keep the secret from, he wouldn't have to keep the secret that he was incapable of keeping by nature.

I've never played this game... but i sure do remember watching my older brother play the game, it was far to scary and complex for me to play back then. I'm going to purchase this from GOG and give it a shot.

Played it, loved it and I wish there was an worthy sequel. I like the Bioshock games, but they're too damn easy compared to this... what the hell happened?

robotcow28 Personally, I believe that when they chose consoles as the main platform, they simplified it for the consoles.

Imagine if there was ever a System Shock DLC for Dead by Daylight with SHODAN as the killer. This would be perfect as her chase theme.

Indeed. Might have a look at Beyond Good & Evil as well...oh crap, I haven't even played Planescape: Torment yet!

Damn straight. I've noticed this with dismay as well..compared to some old classics like Syndicate, Command & Conquer 1, Master of Orion 2 or Baldur's Gate, modern games just don't have that flavour anymore. They're all shiny and great, but it seems to me that they lack the main thing: soul.

I still remember the time after I destroyed the last escape pod ship and I ran down the hallway, then about six Hybrids just came around the corner and charged me, I was able to successfully fight them off but I was laughing so hard the entire time because I just found it hilarious. Good times. :)

@HamzaAnsari14257 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with your usage of the word 'bad' here... outdated, perhaps, best explains the controls! :)

at the same time, this song is something you'd probably hear at a rave party. There'll be the people too scared to dance because they know WHY the song is playing (if they've played the game) and everyone else will just give them weird looks and just dance...
