Systematic Search is a method used to help maintain orientation while doing primary search in a building. This method must be evaluated by your crew and if determined to be safe and effective, can be incorporated into your search toolbox. There are some solid benefits to using it, such as ensuring a thorough search of the building and helping to map out the building in your head to maintain orientation, but there are also some drawbacks to it, with it being a less targeted search, as you search one room completely before moving on to the next room, instead of moving directly to the target area. This search method can be used when appropriate, or certain elements can be used and others dropped if necessary. Please train with it and evaluate it for your own use.

Thank you for the very helpful video. I am a Japanese firefighter, but I have a question. When searching, why don't we secure with ropes between members? I'm sorry if the translation is strange.

I think if you are tethered to other firefighters you will risk becoming entangled.

@@davidschifter1238 Thank you for the wonderful answer.I told my boss the same thing, but it was dangerous if I missed it.In Japan, the number of martyrs is increasing and I wanted to do something about it. I'm sorry if the translation is strange. It was very helpful.

I was told to use the backs of your hand when feeling around, something to do with burning your hands?

Also so you don't lose a finger. Much harder to get the back of your hand snagged on/in something

Also for when touching electrically charged items so that you do not grasp them. The energy could cause your muscles to spasm and keep you from releasing your grip.

Why are they not working in pairs ? Secondly when they crawl back across the centre of the room and come off the wall, thats how firefighters get injured or lost. Never leave the wall.

If one of your partners is low on air deep into the structure would you perform an emergency exit or follow the hose line back to pumper?

depends how low is low... always monitor your air... in 99% of situations, you should be close enough to the exit to leave while following the line. Running low on air is not an emergency in a controlled and organized fire suppression. If you are lost and are low on air, then yes, it's an emergency and you should bail out ASAP.

It’s also why we look for windows for emergency egress in case of an emergency such as low air

All-in-all OK, but my two concerns are: 1) no need to sweep your hands across the shelves of a bookcase of to do such detailed hand searching. The smallest thing you are looking for would be a small child and be realistic about where victims might be (not in a bookcase). 2) if you imagine a grid on the floor area of one foot squares, a fair amount of area was missed - again think about the size of the targets you are looking for so inch by inch isn’t necessary but covering all areas a small child might be is important. I do like the concept of Systematic Search vs traditional right or left wall in that you complete an entire room before going onto the next area. Make aggressive use of TICs and 10’-15’ pieces of webbing anchored back to your partner or a solid object to extend your reach away from walls out into the open floor areas of rooms.

Why are we teaching wasting time searching on a shelf. Only objects victims will be on are beds and bunk beds. There not climbing on hook shelf’s and counter tops. That’s a waste of time. Along with searching a corner of two walls. What is there to even gain from wasting the time. The ff is turning his whole body towards this corner instead of searching the floor behind him
