Racism is more entrenched and systemic than most of us realise. Using a range of practical case studies, Jonathan shows how Australia's white supremacist history continues to influence present-day political, legal and cultural institutions. Mainstream conversations about racism too often focus on overt bigotry, rather than covert structural oppression. The deeper issues are ignored and deprioritised. But pretending that race is irrelevant in the twenty-first century won't make racism go away.
Jonathan is a writer, musician and community organiser with a strong interest in democratic reform and non-hierarchical political structures. Much of his writing focuses on xenophobia, systemic racism and the normalisation of whiteness. Jonathan is a former Queensland poetry slam state champion, and was runner-up in the Australian poetry slam grand finale. He has performed poetry at the Sydney and Brisbane Writers Festivals and as far afield as London and Berlin. Jonathan has lived and worked in remote Aboriginal communities in north-east Arnhem Land as both a cross-cultural mediation facilitator and a community development worker. His views on racism have also been heavily shaped by his personal experiences as the son of a Tamil migrant. In his spare time, Jonathan organises underground community gig nights in houses and backyards around South Brisbane.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was racially assaulted once by a staff in a brand clothing shop Trenery. I was simply been yelled ‘go away’ by saying ‘Hi how are you’ to her. After I complained to the brand no one follow up no apology and I still saw that staff work at the shop from her face I knew she didn’t feel bad about what she did at all.

You have come to get the benefit of the wealth that was built by the first immigrants who were not your ancestors. The first British settlers didn't do that. They started from scratch. Why should you have the same rights in Australia, as the descendants of the people who did all the hard work of building Australia? Australia's infrastructure and institutions are our birthright, not yours.

From personal experience, there’s a subdued racism in Australia which tends to be quite petty. And they always make pathetic excuses to illogically reason their shallow remarks. Instead of being a dignified human being. I feel like it’s common to go below the belt here even when it’s never warranted. The problem here - is that because we are so petty about things (politics, skin colour, race, toxic culture), we are falling behind globally and economically in areas which really matter to society - such as tech, medicine, finance etc. and we lean on other countries to “do it first” because we are so afraid to be innovate, because being innovative means OPENING YOUR MIND. Being authentic and generating useful things for the betterment of society and humankind as a whole is not even comprehensible to many (even in surprisingly high positions of power) because the culture here… is to bully. There’s also a tenancy to racially profile here, without the aide of someone who is actually qualified to give that opinion.
@JC-lu4se

I think the subdued racism comes from non-white Australians who try and bully their way into being given special treatment, jobs and even positions in parliament under the banners of "representation" and "diversity and inclusion". Demanding that there are more people from "diverse backgrounds" in Australian politics, as an example, reeks of arrogance and an unpleasant preoccupation with race and ethnicity. I was always told to never judge a person by their skin colour, but it seems everything is about racial identity these days.

@bsarlie
@bsarlie 7 жыл бұрын
So strange that although I am light skinned I could identify with everything he said. I moved to Australia at the age of 10 months old from Germany. We lived there from 1981 until 1995.My father was German, my mother a coloured South African, I was also not taught my father's language because he was trying to learn English. Although I looked white whenever people heard I was an immigrant I was treated differently oddly enough mostly because of my German side. Although Australia was the only country I'd ever known, I always felt like an outsider. Kids would make comments about my lips which were larger than everyone else's at the time. Now people pay for lip enhancement. I left Australia when I was 15 for South Africa after apartheid was abolished and it was no longer a crime for my parents to be married. I felt like I was coming home even though I'd never lived there before. There is alot of racism and bigotry in SA but we don't pretend it doesn't exist. I had far for racism directed at me in Australia than in SA. I can't remember learning in school the true history of Australia and what was done to the indigenous people there but I definitely learnt about the history of apartheid at school in SA. This is part of systematic racism, creating a narrative that doesn't make you feel bad.I learnt more about convicts and ANZAC'S than I ever knew about aboriginal history during my time at school in Hobart and I was there til the beginning of grade 10. Who knows maybe it was taught in later grades but even if it was it should've been taught in primary school. By no means am I saying all Australian's are racist but in my time spent in Tasmania that was my experience and I still love Tasmania and hope to take my kids there one day because it's one of the most beautiful places in the world with some amazing people and helped form the person I am today. Always remember that just because you haven't experienced something personally doesnt mean that someone else's experience isn't true.

I can believe you were treated badly and I'm sorry you went through that. It feels like the world is going backwards and history is repeating itself. Anyone that is different is treated as the enemy and the cause of all their problems. The muslims are lucky in South Africa they aren't treated badly or labelled as terrorists. But Xenophobia definitely exists towards people from other African countries. Tribalism is rampant no matter where you are I guess.

Aborigines didn't have a written language and many are careful never to mention people who have died, so the only record of the Aboriginal experience is that which has been recorded by white people. It has become fashionable recently, for Aborigines to make grandiose claims about their achievements before white settlement. The lack of physical or recorded evidence for their supposed achievements, is blamed on destruction by white people.

The thing for me as a whitefella is that to confront and begin to talk about this stuff doesnt mean I have to hang my head in shame and wallow in self/cultural denigration it actually inspires me to become more deeply human. Isnt the essence of humanity to be able to learn from past/present mistakes and aspire to do better? To be human is to be connectted to other humans and if my fellow human is being denied there full humanity I lose out too. Selfishness/self centredness leads to loneliness and bitterness ala Pauline Hanson. No thanks! Australia surely WE Can Do Better.

Jason Johnston Yeh funny outside Australia, everyone supplants Americas history on to Australia. It has to be white mans persecution of course, never the fact they had their own culture which led to their own demise. We had white slavery (convicts). We never enslaved blacks, committed organised genocide (95% died from common pathogens introduced without intent). More whites were killed by Aboriginals than the other way and locals were trialled and jailed for killing them. The Indigenous have had it so good here living as 'Fringe Dwellers', exchanging meat for white mans goods.. Nothing like actual persecution in the U.S. The Indigenous have been sitting under trees all day for 50 000 years and since white man arrived they sat under a tree drinking themselves in to a stupor. They weren't like the Maoris of NZ who were a massive army. These were inbred Nomads who have the lowest IQ on the planet. Anyway you can thank George Soros for rewriting the history books of late like the BLM movement in the U.S ( I studied Aboriginal and Australian History before all this B.S revisionism and Leftist regressives talking on TED X taking up the African American attitude of persecution). The Aboriginals here are the most privileged people on the planet and they still bitch and moan.

I'm very curious what Australians think about Russians that immigrated there?I want to say that sometimes I thinking about immigration to Australia but seeing let's say by *misunderstanding* among people about taking jobs from them makes me confused about it. Here in Moscow, I have quiet decent job. I am railway station manager on a big railway station graduated from university 2 years ago. However, if I would go to Australia I would be half-literate for aussie people because my English would be poor and I won't have local experience and education so I won't be able to occupy same position there. I may be wrong with all of that and would be happy if things not like that. Moreover, I have no idea about multiculturalism and what its like by the way I'm Christian.

It's a lovely outfit but I hardly see any white people. So if people don't enjoy the company of those intolerant to people who don't look the same as them there are places you might fit in better. Then white people can go to the places where they get to engage with other white people. But there will still be bullying. You don't really have to technically leave.. just find a different suburb because it's worse pretending to endure each other if not compatible. This isn't the way to win someone over who doesn't think you'll make a good match unfortunately. But it is possible for some people.

Although I love to listen to Jonathan speak, I believe he misses the elephant in the room. Systemic economic and educational inequality is what oppresses non-whites more than discrimination in Australia. I would be interested in the stats for incarcerated non-whites divided by both economic wealth and educational advantage, and those without it. Would those stats be similar to those identifying as white? The more important issue is Inequality. Discrimination is illegal, however, inequality is not. Discrimination is a distraction that divides our nation, instead of uniting us against those fanning the inequality that leads to oppression.

All spoke of this new and improved form of structured civilisation that would be a utopia or like heaven on earth, complete equilibrium and a happy ever after. But in practice it delivered the opposite for the ethnic Russians under it, hell on earth. From its brutally violent over throw of the Tsar and the government in 1918 up to 1947, the death toll stands at 90-120 MILLION lives lost as direct result of communist ideology once implemented in practice and reality. The greatest death toll ever inflicted by anything or anyone in the entirety of human history. And I believe they were and still are proud of that achievement. My friend is Indian. She has a beautiful face and smooth bronze skin which is the envy of every pasty white girl in our school. She said she's never been racially attacked by white Australians. However lots of Indians and Asian girls have been rude to her because of her skin colour. They think white "fair" skin is better. But whiteness isn't beauty. A person's facial features make them beautiful. I don't get it.

3 days into my visit in Australia i got into an argument with an Aboriginal man, i accidentaly bumped into him as he was standing right in front of my barstool, so i got up and tried to give him some space. He then started to threaten me, intimidate me and verbally abuse me, while i literally did nothing wrong. What i'm trying to say, is that racism is indeed a thing, but its overlooked when it happens to white folks like me. So even though i love this video and the message he is spreading, i call bullshit on the whole 'white privilege'' thing, i had terrible, racist shit happen to me even though i'm white. Unfortunately we have a lot of issues with alcoholism in the indigenous community. This is due in part to the legacy of 19th century colonialism and in part to the failure of the aboriginal community to modernize. It's a complex problem.

versnellingspookie It is the net privilege my friend. As the other person explained, racism isn't the same as prejudice. Everyone is prejudiced against other groups of people, but when that prejudice is supported by systemic power, it turns into racism. And to be honest, you shouldn't compare minor incidents where a person of aboriginal descent mistreated you to cases where people of color are extremely disproportionately represented in prison and have far less access to housing, education and employment. Also, don't discount the fact that an aboriginal person might indeed be hateful of white people BECAUSE of how whites have treated his/her people historically and to date. We're not condoning hate. We're just being aware of a cause-effect dynamic. You shouldn't ask whether a person of color is capable of mistreating you. You should try to prove that as a white person, the prejudice of non-white people against you results in putting you at a disadvantage in terms of housing, jobs, education...etc. I believe you will not succeed in proving that, which makes your argument one of false equivalency and in fact quite disingenuous.

Wasn’t until I migrated to an Asian country that I realised despite the racial issues faced in Australia it is a paradise compared to what goes on in Asia. Non Asians face lots of passive aggressive racism against them, and upfront racism is not uncommon. Just read the comments section anytime a “foreigner” steps out of line in Singapore for example. No other country in the region has the levels of migration that Australia has, and all in all this indicates migrants willingness to want to live in Australia no matter what.

Actually we've got thousands of Indian students and most of them work while studying (usually more than they are allowed to legally but also exploited sometimes too), and send money back money. Some end up staying here too, plenty of Indians and Lankans living here. Not saying there isn't racism in Australia, but you've gotta understand there's a huge diversity of cultures/backgrounds here, so it's not total shit for immigrants here at all. It is hardest for Aboriginals than it is for Indians or any other immigrant/student group.

First of all I'm not white, my skin is much darker then his. My mother is a refugee. You are right it was wrong what was done to the aboriginals and they as the first to inhabit Australia and what happened to them was wrong but thats not what the true argument is here. There are many reasons why people leave their countries and move to Australia today and one of these reasons is the culture. Western culture and values which are secular are some of the positives, the religious and other cultural values of the places my parents left were actually a part of the driving force to get them to leave. There is nothing wrong with secular western values, it is these values that have made these societies attractive and peaceful and equal. There are racists but that has nothing to do with culture. There are somethings about culture that can be exchanged such as foods, clothing and art that are benign but the value system of the cultures are dangerous to the peace. I am pro assimilation, I am anti-racist. You actually might be racist against white people, since you assumed I was white.

imtrollingson There are different people who inhabited lands that are currently occupied for example india was inhabited by the persians the british and many different people throughout the ages. So who rightfully owns the land. Do people get mad at the current inhabitants. I choose to assimilate into the culture my family choose to join, they chose to move to the west because it is a better culture the laws and ideals are better. Although what they did was wrong at least they acknowledge what they did, the cultures that he comes from is one that has done the same thing and yet it's not really know, no one apologizes for it. So yes i choose this culture and it should be socially unacceptable to revert to your old culture, if u wanted that you could have stayed where you were.
