Your right, but that is just practice.. once the limbs start flying it's not hard for someone good to get their hands to your face, neck or groin. Once there, it's easy to inflict pain and get the body moving. I would recommend you attend a seminar and politely resist their motions, and then you can see if it works or not. It would be worth your time, I think. It will be fun, too.

Thats the point though, it's hard to do while sparring, because your trying not to actually hurt someone. Once someone who is capable gets close and starts digging their fingers (Or striking)into painful spots those weird throws and takedowns will work, it's just how the body moves. The pain response opens windows that are not available otherwise. But, training partners can only take so much...thats why we see so many silly looking flow drills.

Not that you can tell from my last comment, but I respect what these people are doing very much. I just see too much of other martial arts in there to believe this is wholly a russian system. Hell, some of them are wearing gis and belts.. I think I saw a samurai sword in there as well.

I agree, but what these guys have developed, and again, I respect it very much, looks an awful lot like what taiji people do... the relaxation and body mechanics, and as vasiliev shows, the breathing and the strikes all seem like taijichuan stuff... But I will say, the russians make it all much more obvious.

I'm not talking about aikido, they move too much. I will look through my favorites later to see if i can find a clear example. Imagine someone like vasiliev really squeezing(or striking) your throat, while twisting your head/neck in the direction you are trying to escape...it's very uncomfortable and effective... and dangerous.. thats why you can't practice that way. If you keep that in mind, his videos are more understandable.

with all do respect to you, only people that have not been popped then twisted up by someone like vasiliev think the system is "unusable".. it works just fine, but you have to hurt people to do it.

@tearo it is aikido dude, dont care what he calls it. i did aikido and everything but the stance is aikido. My thought was "why is this polish art with the same name as the russian systema using japanese Gi for training and the belt grading system"

These guys would have been great at abu graib... jumping over piles of naked men. I'm sorry, but It annoys me when people take something, repackage it, then call it something new. How is this stuff NOT asian martial arts?
