There's an interesting piece of history from late 1941 regarding T-34's. During the Continuation War in Finland, the Finnish troops near Syväri (which is now a town called Svirstroy) managed to capture their first T-34. During the initial assault, Finns used their captured T-26's and shot over 40 rounds at the T-34's with no results,, watching as the T-34's drove away afterwards. This was noted as the first time Finnish troops had met a T-34 on the frontlines. The same afternoon a new attack began, and now eighteen T-34 tanks began to move towards the Finnish positions. 5 of these tanks were destroyed while at the road, the frontline bowed temporarily, but the attack was repulsed in the end. At the end of the battle, Finnish infantry reported that one enemy tanks had been stuck intact on its own side of the front line on a stump. The leader of the tank group Lieutenant Niittylä along with Lieutenant Laitinen, Tankers Viitanen and Heino left to take over the tank. It was found that the T-34 was stuck on two stumps. The crew of the wagon had escaped. Heino went in through the bottom hatch, found the main switch and starter, but failed to start the tank. In determining the reason for this, it was found that the T-34 starter gear did not hit the starter ring in the correct position because of the way it was resting on top of the two tree stumps. What was done there after; One of the stumps was blown off and the other stump was cut. As the tank settled straight, the T-34 rumbled into motion. The tank was brand new. Only four shells had been fired out of the cannon. Tanker Heino drove the tank along the Linjatie through the Podporoze and Muurmann railway bridges to Syväri station, where it was loaded onto a train and taken to Petrozavodsk in October 1941. The wagon took part in the conquest of Karhumäki in December 1941. The remaining part of this story relates to why we had the nickname "Sotka" or "Diving Duck" for T-34's during the war: The T-34 tank was called "Sotka" during the war years. The birth story of the name is as follows. There was a guy named Suominen serving in the tank battalion, a Tanker from Tammela, who worked in Pammäjärvi, Tammela, as a sailor for a tug boat named "Sotka" before the war. Suominen told his friends stories about Sotka and praised its long chimney all the time. When Tanker Heino drove the never before seen T-34 from Äänislinna railway station to the Forward Operating Base of the Armored Battalion, someone from the group yelled when he saw the tank model with its long barrel: "There's that Sotka Suominen always talks about." This is how the baptismal words of the tank model were pronounced, and that designation remained in common use. In fact, I still personally call T-34's as "Sotka" :)

Casting as "Rough as a Badgers Arse" as we used to say in the British Army. The T34/85 in Bovington Tank Museum....The rear engine plate, where the exhausts are located @14.00 in this video, they do not even touch each other let alone are welded to each other. Rough and ready and it did the job. I bet Greenpeace love that Tank...lol. Bit of a bitch to drive so i have heard.
@MilitaryArmamentsCompany2 жыл бұрын
It doesnt need to look beautiful to be functional. In regards to driving it, it depends on perspective. On one hand if you can drive a T-34 you can drive anything lol. But on a real note, it difficult in the sense your vision is limited and that it does require effort to steer. However, like any of our tanks they all have trade offs. While it might be more difficult to tight steer the T-34 it does turn alot tighter and a hell of a lot better than either of our shermans. So just in MY personal opinion if I had to take one or the other I would probably take the T-34 even though its more difficult to drive, it has better mobility and is pretty quick. But just before I have to hear all the internet warriors complain about what I just said, I did state that was my personal opinion and user experience may vary. Especially if you are tall, then it would be extremely difficult to drive over something like a sherman. Lol in regards to your Greenpeace comment, I want to put an "eco-boost" sticker right next to the exhaust of our T-62

@alekzandah3602 жыл бұрын
Man, seeing him trying to turn on that tank makes you wonder how janky it could be if you were out in the eastern front during your "off hours" and suddenly had to bring the tank into action from a cold start, knowing full well a German 75 can blow you up like a soda can. homogeneity Also, I remember hearing that the soviets cheapened that tank to the point where in some factories, the driver's seat was deemed "unnecessary" and that if you needed a cushion you could fold your greatcoat and sit on it, and that's ignoring the HORRIBLE crew conditions inside one of those tanks.. but it sure beats being in a T-26, I guess.
@MilitaryArmamentsCompany2 жыл бұрын
Hard starting a tank is not specific to country of origin. Our American, British, or Russian stuff is all difficult at first. Once we fine tune it a bit they fire right up, including the Russian/Soviet gear. As someone who has worked on a variety of tanks from various countries they are all relatively the same. The main difference is usually the process of designing the tank

To own just a driving tank, no law prohibits that, anyone can. The hurdles begin with sourcing the tank, always check it has paperwork that the Govt. allowed its release. Foreign equipment is usually free and clear if for sale privately however there are some occasions the govt. can still own them. The firing part involves all matter of licences that can be found at ATF website.

This particular turret adds to the story of this tanks history, its one of the reasons we likely know where it has been. So even if you had any other variation of turret we would be unlikely to do a swap. Although I wouldn't mind restoring a T-34 of a different variant if we had the resources. I will have to look into those ponchos

damnnnnn I ssoooooo want one of these. I am not gay, but who's cawk do I have to suk to get one......?
Please do not start the engine in cold weather without preheating cooling liquid and oil. The T55 has a heater to do so, for the T34 the Russians used a flat metal box with coal under the rear of the tank. The T55 should be heated to 60 °Celsius if possible (takes about 30 min) or at least to 40 °C. Failure to do so will significantly decrease the life time of the engine to less than 20%. The air filter you used in the video about the bastard T 54 tank does not deserve the name air filter and will not do any favor to the engine. I am a former T55 driver.
@MilitaryArmamentsCompany2 жыл бұрын
Here in Vegas we are in the desert where the temperature will hardly ever dip into what most people consider cold weather conditions. Very often throughout the year our ambient air temperature is 49 Celsius. I do agree with your point however we are a privately owned entity and therefor do not have the budget or the time to maintain the equipment to the level of modern military. The tanks that do have pre-heaters we do use when the situation is applicable but just understand that although we would love to have the ability to maintain the gear the proper way, the reality is that with our small crew we would only be spending time maintaining gear and never restoring new projects, which would take out the fun that our job provides. Don't worry though we have one of the best maintained systems here compared to alot of museums that get something running and then let it sit and rot away. We periodically take our gear for runs and do PMCS to them
