Now it's all about Blue people with boring stories, rubbish music, CG overload and bringing in 2+ billion. Cool I guess for him but this film was the very height of his excellence as a director, storyteller, human being. It’s really the show don’t tell mentality of movie making back then. Put the viewer in the place of the normal person, let us see how the characters interact. This guy doesn’t care that he’s being burnt, he brushes off knives and bats, and he can forcibly grab a gun out of your hands before you can pull the trigger. He is throwing people across rooms and is on a mission.

What I love most is that this T-800 does not kill the gang members, but rather leaves them injured but alive, unlike his other one in 1984 that killed them without thinking, already making it clear that this Terminator is not evil, and even more so with the good song that they play in the background makes it more obvious and so he is the hero who commanded the resistance to protect their leader John Connor as a child

Yes, what makes the scene even more genius is when the T-1000 is introduced, the audience doesn't know yet about his liquid metal knives so when he stabs the cop in the gut just off screen, the audience would have thought that he just knocked him out with a gut punch and stole his clothes. James Cameron is a master of understanding the audience mindset and it shows 😁

@Rand Usually the owner of a biker bar is either a member, or working very closely with the MC that frequents it. Basically a part of the MC. Not every bar a MC stops at is linked with the MC, but in this case the bartender has a vest similar to the member who got the knife stuck through his shoulder, which leads me to believe that he is very closely involved with this MC.

So he went in threat assessment and determined that there was no damage. In fact he didn’t react, he reacted only when the guy behind him broke the stick on his back. As I said, the details in this movies were amazing. Even more in a time where there was no KZfaq, and people where not used to pause movies in search for details like this. Amazing.

It's product placement. Companies give their stuff away and pay the studios to immerse whatever it is they want to market. It's why everyone on tv uses a mac computer, James Bonds various accoutrements, gadgets and car manufacturers are all paying top dollar for a few moments of screen time. Especially if the character using their product is "cool" like the Terminator. It can be well executed and seamlessly integrated into a plot or narrative like in this case, but can also be a little clunky and crass when crow-barred into a shot or conversation, out of obligation to some fast food corp for example. Even Anime movies and cartoons use product placement. Some animators have to draw replicas of the devices and clothing available in reality to advertise. It's trippy.

@@Krystalmyth We know that, you're just stating the obvious. This was going next level - what's the world building of the script team like. We have to go by what the bar tender knew. The movie makers shouldn't make the average people to expect robots. It's not that obvious for the bar tender that this was a robot - not in an 80's world. Nowadays some might think that, when we have the experimental humanlie robots in test phases. Here, it was most likely this was a body builder, crazy on steroids and maybe something else. But he likely didn't trust the shotgun to stop the big guy, even if taking a leg out - is how I would accept his behaviour. Just there's also this stupid repeating movie solution: bring the gun within the hand reach. So not everything in this scene is scripted smartly.

Normally it would be out of character given the how brutal the entrance of T1's T-800 was, but it makes sense in the context of T2's T-800 being deployed by the Resistance, that the modified programming to protect Connor may have already affected its general behavior before young Connor would reinforce the no-kill order onto the T-800 unit.

Any one ever catch the knife blade bending when Arnie gets stabbed? I watched a you tube video a while back where they thought they found a mistake on that part. Personally, I'm not so sure that was a mistake. I actually caught this years back after the movie came out on VHS. I had a pretty nice Mitsubishi VCR back then that would freeze, frame by frame with a jog dial, and did so without picture distortion. My friends and I were convinced that the knife bending was on purpose and not a prop flop. The actor thrusts the knife into Arnie pretty hard and I believe this scene purposely shows the hyper-alloy combat chassis in action. The knife pierces the human tissue of the cyborg and immediately impacts the metal-endo skeleton (combat chassis) underneath, causing it to bend. Amazing and authentic special effects detail set forth by James Cameron. The movie is just awesome!!!

Such an amazing and well thought out scene. Within 5 minutes you know this guy is immune to pain, can break bones like nothing, can take heavy blunt damage to the head and stab wounds and remain unfazed, wields strength beyond that of any human, can have deadly firearms pointed at him and not care and that his persona is straight to the point with no bullshitting. It felt like Cameron sat down and wrote this in part for people who hadn't seen the first film and jumped straight into this one. They got the basic gist of a Terminators capabilities within 5 minutes: This dude is basically unstoppable to ordinary non-future plasma rifle wielding humans. For fans of the first movie who knew about the T-800 it was just pure power fantasy. Cameron is a genius film maker.
