T'au Crisis Battlesuits the Simple Way - How I Paint Things

Crisis Battlesuits are an iconic part of the T'au range, and it's a rare army that'll hit the table without a few of these providing rapid reaction fire support. Luckily enough, they aren't particularly difficult to paint! READ MORE:
It turns out GW doesn't make Averland Sunset in a can any more! My mistake - there's so many of them available at my local store that I'd never realised they were out of production. Instead, try a primer of Wraithbone!
It's been a very long time since I've actually painted any battlesuits, so it was an interesting challenge to tackle an old miniature with some new tricks. The paints have certainly come a long way from when I was first drybrushing Farsight Enclave Fire Warriors! As I mention in the video, it's worth taking a look at some of the official colour recommendations for different Sept worlds - these techniques will work perfectly well just by swapping the colours you're using, so there's not a lot of complex changes to be made in how you approach the miniature just because you want to play a different army to the original T'au Sept.
How would you paint a Ghostkeel? Like this, but bigger. A drone? Like this, but smaller!

As a concept, the light orange with warm tan accents sounds so simple but you made it look amazing! I've been agonizing over how to paint my first batch of Tau since the default white and red just doesn't do anything for me, and this video helped me realize that I was probably hamstringing myself trying to come up with elaborate color schemes. Jumping in with something uncomplicated but striking like this sounds like the way to go. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Cheers, John! Very kind. :) It only recently occurred to me to take some of the tank painting tricks I'd seen from folks doing Bolt Action and bigger 1/35 scale tank kits and apply those to 40k stuff, but even something as simple as the varnish going on to assist the shade makes a big difference.

Thank you for the tutorial. I am planning to start with Warhammer 40k, with the T'au, and have been looking for a good tutorial with an ochre colour scheme. I was quite daunted with the thought of painting but you seem to make it look a bit easier. I am likely going to keep the symbols in the same colour as the ochre and considering replacing the brown colour with a reddish-brown; I have seen that on a couple of models and it seems nice.

I really think there's something to be gained in getting to see that everybody makes mistakes. There's no point in everything being picture perfect in every frame, especially not when you're trying to demonstrate how someone's probably going to end up making those same mistakes, but how to fix them instead!

The important thing to remember is that everything is practice. Even if it goes a bit bonk, you're still learning something from the experience - even if it's annoying in the moment that it hasn't worked properly! If all else, bear in mind that these things are plastic. You can always repaint them!

Looks great. I'm going for the white scheme for mine, with a sort of Alien Forest style base (probably based black and most stuff kept very dark) gonna do brown, alien blue and alien void tufts (the void are just black, but think they will be cool) so it will sort of be like either at night time, but has some bioluminescence type deal, or it could actually be inside of a cave system or something. I wanted to do something white to have against this base idea I had, and Tau jumped out at me as the perfect candidate. They have some white, but also black and grey, with a little bit of red, and then blue on the lenses. This combined with the brown weathering on the white plates will go absolutely with a very dark base, with reddy brown highlights and then black, brown and blue flora. At least in my mind it works, I've yet to get started on it yet. I actually picked up a few packs of laser plants the other day as well, so have more variations for flora. Just baked a load of wood chips as well, which are really nice to use and rock formations. Going to do some vines from green stuff and have them on the rocks as well. I also learned how to make moss from various flocks and then highlighting them up with paint. It's more of a natural woodland recipe though, so I don't know if it'll work on this alien planet( definitely going to use this recipe on my Jungle bases for my Saim Hann, Eldar) LoL, I think I might be almost more into basing now. At least pairing the right scheme with the right base is big (for me at least) Anyway man, I think I've just rattled on about my own projects... what you working on? (I just realised this video is 2 years old, so you probs won't even see the comment, LoL)

The change in the surface will actually keep the shade from adhering as easily as it would on straight paint. Whoops! They've still got a couple packs of it in my local game store, I hadn't even realised they'd stopped making it. Ah, well. Wraithbone should work fine in its stead.

Haha, tempting! It was really useful painting a Knight, too... might be a wise idea to stock up while I can.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I definitely would man, I'd buy at least 3-4 cans if I could in a heartbeat

What varnish can I use? I tried my usual matte spray varnish (Mr. Super Clear) but it didn't work, the shade still stuck to the flat planes. Can I use Ardcoat instead ?

Use something that isn't matte. Munitorum Varnish is a satin or semi-gloss, which doesn't let the shade 'cling' as well to flat surfaces. 'Ardcoat might work as well, but if you're still having trouble with it, skip the varnish step and just use the shade with a little bit of Lahmian Medium mixed in.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio oooh I thought Lahmian Medium was to help varnish adhere more to flat surfaces and if you wanted the varnish to go only in creases you had to add water!
