Hi, I'm Kendrick, your driving instructor.
which car should pass the intersection first? USA Road Rules
On our channel we learn driving lessons and road rules, road signs.

Note, this is not the case for many many countries. In say Europe, the blue car would have came first as it is an equal intersection as there are no shark teeth or yield/priority signs. And in that case there are a couple standard rules and the rule important in this situation is that traffic from the right has priority.

Not in Denmark. When you come from a less busy road without center stripes and want to go out onto a larger busy road with center stripes, the blue car must always hold back. The same would apply if the blue car drove from his private driveway at his residence onto a road. :)

@@knus1959 In Norway known as «the gentlemans paragraf». It was removed from the legislation many years ago. Even so, blue cars tend to still be a little causes. Coming from a paring lot, a gas station and residential entrances, blue holds back.

Belgium has priority from the right too if there are no signs, road markings or lights saying otherwise.

@@knus1959 The red car need to yield for traffic from the right unless something else is indicated by signs, "sharks teeth" or a change in road surface. If the blue car exited a private driveway there would be a row of cobblestones as minimum to indicate change of surface.

The red car, going straight, has the right of way. The blue car, coming to a T should stop. But in real life, the blue car would have a stop sign or a yield sign.

There are two reasons the red truck has the right of way: 1) The blue car is entering the main thoroughfare from a side street and must yield to oncoming traffic. 2) The blue car is making a left turn. At an uncontrolled intersection, it must yield to all traffic coming from the left AND the right.

But this is not true in other countries. In Europe blue car should go first, there is only right hand turn principle.

This is interesting because according to my driving book (New York State dmv book), it states at intersections not controlled by signs of signals or where two or more drivers stop at stop signs at the same time and they are at right angles, the driver on the left must yield the right of way to the driver on the right. The only thing that would make me stop for the red car is that if the red car was too close for me to turn while I'm in the blue car, then I would let the red car (and also assuming any cars in the opposite direction of where the red car is going I would stop for them and let them pass too) then I would go after both sides are clear or clear enough for me to go. Also my dmv book doesn't explain about the T-intersection thing. This is one thing I can't FN stand about dmv books--some of them don't contain the same thing as others and so the smallest thing can or will be a problem on the road test or in driving in general. I would follow my common sense like I noted above but still think that what my dmv book says to go is correct.

In Europe it would be the other way around, cause the intersection is uncontrolled and the blue car is coming from the right then it has right of the way. Only exeption would be if the blue car was coming from a rural dirt road, parking lot or any other place thats not considered a road.

No. It applies in every country. Germany here. Red car should pass first. This not an equal intersection meaning that both cars move with different speed. Red car is on the main road. Priority to the right rule is not valid in this case.

In Europe, the blue car will have the right of way as it is on the right. In America, you don‘t normally have an totally uncontrolled intersection so the red car truck that is on the „Main Rd/Priority Rd“ will have the right of way. Interesting what the answer will be……

@chronicreader *"a main road would be marked with a large yellow diamond"* It's not just a large yellow diamond, it also has a white diamond as well. Plus these diamond priority signs aren't even large as you think they are. US diamond shapes signs are larger than the European signs.

In Norway, blue car first, red second. Red has traffic from right.

Yeah this has me confused. "Main thoroughfare" how do you determine that? I tend to use caution when I feel I enter and uncontrolled intersection when I come from a less busy road though. Make sure traffic indeed yield as not to get t-boned :O

I was in a similar situation. I was the red car and the guy in the “blue” car couldn’t wait and made the turn anyway. Not only that, he gave me the birdie. Some people just shouldn’t be driving.

Without any signs stating otherwise, in Europe there is a right-before-left right of way rule that is always the default at intersections. Of course we can safely assume the red vehicle would be going at a higher speed so insisting on the right of way could ruin the blue vehicle driver's day. Anyway - the US isn't the world standard, I can only hope that none of your students who will be driving in Europe will get seriously injured nor cause a fatal accident for others as well.

In the Netherlands, at _all uncontrolled intersections_ , all _drivers_ (this term means basically every non-pedestrians: horse driver, truck driver, bicyclists) must give way to drivers from the right. So the blue car has the right of way in a similar situation in the Netherlands. EXCEPT when the blue car comes from an unpaved (not bricked / asphalted) road or from a driveway.

I Europe clearly the blue car has the right. Right before left is the absolute rule. Only lights or signs can change that. For the the red car to have the right in Europe, there would need to be signs indicating that.

Here in Alberta, Canada, the vehicle on the right has the 'right of way', in this case the blue car. Friend of mine once had an accident where he was in the position of the red truck. He was at fault.

Blue car right of way holds true for Denmark but I didn't expect for Canada because this video is from USA. I was expecting same rules for US And Canada

@@durrrrl3435 there are a few reasons. It helps to keep traffic flow equally from all directions. And it saves fuel.

@Lukasz Ostrowski Not in North America. Only if it is a four way uncontrolled intersection the car on the right has the right of way. When it is a three way uncontrolled intersection, the traffic on the through road has the right of way and traffic on the stem must yield.

@@durrrrl3435 Yes, in europe there arent any special rules for T-intersection, so its right before left, if it's uncontrolled. However practically there would be signs to give the major road right of way, espacially with the angled entrance of the sideroad.

In other videos you've made, you've said a white, dotted line means the road is one way. Unless I need to adjust something on my phone, the road the red truck is on has a white, dotted line. So, either the truck is going the wrong way, or the blue car is trying to turn the wrong direction.

Reading the comments here, one sees that driving in a different country can be a challenge. The legislation may be different and the common behaviour of the drivers may be different, so take care, and do not believe that everybody knows the rules.

I find it difficult to believe such an intersection would be uncontrolled, at least in the US. The side street that the blue car is on would most likely have a stop sign.

Not to split hairs here. I'm from Canada and the last time I was in the states this rule was the same in both places. Where I'm from anyway white dashed lines separate traffic moving the same direction. It leads me to beleive that is a one way road. So SHOULD that blue car be turning left at all?

Which passes first if the blue car turns right on such intersection? In Poland (Europe) a car on the right always goes first through uncontrolled intersections regardless of further direction.

In Norway blue car drives first. Red car gets traffic from his right and has to halt.

Washington State gives the blue car the right of way at an uncontrolled intersection unless it is entering from a private road or driveway. There is no exception for T-Intersections. Many drivers aren’t aware of this, and it often leads to confusion and perhaps some accidents.

Came here to say the same thing. In Washington though, I tell my drivers ed students that even though you have the right of way, you have no idea where that other driver learned to drive. And just to be safe assume the other driver doesn't know that rule and yield to them. If you're the blue car you may be right, and you may also get t-boned for being right.

@@bfawce77 My neighborhood has that type of intersection. When driving, it feels like the blue car should yield. When it was uncontrolled nearly everyone treated it that way. The city finally noticed this problem and gave the blue car a stop sign.

If this happened in Las Vegas, the teal car is a drunk driver with "right-of-the-way daddy issues" and turns directly in front of the red truck who is under the influence of crystal meth with delusions of grandeur and plows into the teal car.

In Europe it is the opposite (in the cases of uncontrolled intersections). So be careful. Unless you drive in Turkey where such rules do not bother anyone!!! The fastest passes!

You are incorrect in one statement. The law NEVER grants right-of-way. The law only defines which vehicle must yield. As such, the red car does not have right-of-way, but the blue car must yield to the through road. Also, it is pretty much a given that the red car is moving on the through road and the blue car is stopped before entering the through road. As such, it would be wise for the blue car to yield to a moving car.

Mainland Europe drives right side. It is just some islands in the vicinity as UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus that drive on the left side. ;^)

I think you making huge mistake you creating the problem. Do you have a drivers who goes to Europe and drivers who stays in America in Europe you have a right hand rule, so you are Creating danger zone. maybe it’s time to think and create similar laws on the street. this way you can help people To stay safe, regardless what are they driving? Isn’t that common sense?

Based on the way the side street leads into the T intersection either the red truck is going the wrong way on a one way street or the blue car is going the wrong way down a 1 way street and trying to then turn the wrong way onto another 1 way street. Most of these Kendrick's Driving Tests videos are awful examples because of crazy errors like this. What a terrible channel.
