It was a bit frustrating when you have one battery with a melted positive top post.... tested fine but these problems show up when you really need good batteries. These two stroke diesels dont have a block heater or glow plugs. THANKS FOR WATCHING

When I farmed I had a 2-71 in an Allis Chalmers HD5G bulldozer. It was a 1954 and we got it in early 1971 after I got home from Vietnam in the fall of 1970. So it was 16 years old and the engine had never had the head off. Summer or winter, it took a shot of starting fluid in the air intake to start. About 1976, we had to have it overhauled. It got the newer "high ring" pistons and after that it started without starting fluid as long as the temperature was above 20 degrees F. I am not sure what was :high" about the "high-ring" pistons, since there were rings both below and above the wrist pin on these, but it made a difference. In the army, I was a postal clerk at the APO in Rio de Janeiro but got a chance to help a U.S. Navy machinists mate tear down a V16-71 that was a gen set for the big NAVCOMTECHGROUP Rio navy radio station co-located with the Brazilian navy. It covered all of the South Atlantic and well beyond. The navy guy was a patient teacher with an 18-year old farm boy and I learned a lot. He was happy to have help. No air wrenches and there were a lot of bolts to get loose. It had two V-8-71 blocks bolted together and onto a common frame and we tore it down to that. You have to have a lot of space to lay out that many parts and keep them all sorted out. He had a system. The 71 series was an amazing feat of engineering. C

I used to operate the old 72-31B in Northern Ireland (50 Cal proof Armoured Cab) when I served in the Forces. That Detroit Diesel used to go down a right hit at 3 am in a built up area when clearing barricades of burning cars and Buses. A lot of Military Vehicles were targets for missiles and stones but funnily enough no one used to come near the Terex when she was in full voice munching through car engine blocks for breakfast in her 4 in 1 bucket. Happy days.

An idea if you wanna go cheap. Remove air filter. Get a helper to hold a lit propane torch in the intake and crank. I got the idea from an old m35a2 I had. Works wonders in colder weather.

KAT makes tank-type recirculating heaters that'll keep them warm. I very good idea is a couple of pan heaters and battery blankets. I live in Bethel, Alaska and own a 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 with the v-10. I have a 1500W recirculating heater, 150W engine oil pan heater, 150W transmission pan heater, 100W battery blanket, and a 25W strip heater on the power steering fluid reservoir. Lastly a trickle charger for the battery. Yes it sucks the juice, but the truck always starts easily even when it is -30* F.

When I worked at a gravel pit ,getting everything started in mornings was a job. We had good luck putting a Gasoline soaked rag over the air cleaner intake. Most things would fire up a lot easier. Be Careful once those battery terminals get hot ,it is easy to Blow up a battery. Seen battery box lids get bent bad on some blow ups.

Detroits start better cold when you pull the kill on them FIRST... get it spinning, then let the Kill go back in, adding a little fuel at a time...the rack is wide open when starting, and pumps a LOT of fuel in... less fuel plus compression gives a little heat.. not enough to run.. but warms the cylinder.. Ether wipes out the top ring killing compression...

Works really well. I don't know why someone didn't clue me in on this trick a long time ago, but cranking with the fuel off and adding it in slowly makes all the difference. I don't spend a lot of time around Detroits, but the trick is great getting old loaders/backhoes started in winter that don't have grid heaters or glow plugs.

Engine heaters are fine if you have a generator nearby. The smart thing to do is install the engine heater when the weather is a lot warmer. One would have to make a permanent box on each piece of equipment to keep the generator in or someone would come along and steal it big time.
