The 6 1/2-foot fossil is about 76 million years old and still has most of the external skull bones and numerous teeth, Sotheby's experts said. Darla Miles has the story.

People go to museums to see replicas and millionaires just buy real fossils. I personally think people deserve to see the real thing as long as the museum can preserve the champions properly and the visitors are respectful to them( ain't nobody throwing soup to the T Rex)

Our Cleveland museum developed a casting technique for Lucy that can be used for scientific research. But all the museum dinosaur skeletons l have seen are real. Where are you seeing fake ones?

Museums never ever display the real ones even if they have them. I used to think museums should have them too but honestly it will probably be studied far more in the ownership of a billionaire than it ever will be sitting at the back of a storage room at a museum.

How do you think the museums make money? Admission tickets? They would have gone out of business a long time ago!

This is one of the problems. We know so little about dinosaurs partly because of how rare the fossils are and partly because so many specimens are in private collections and can’t be studied. There are many fossils that were poached and kept in private collections only to reemerge decades later to find out they were unknown species!

@@shahzebnasir4692 museums do actually often have real skeletons on display but the rarer or more expensive ones are usually kept underground in a geoscience lab/vault. However surprisingly the most famous and expensive dinosaur fossil, the tyrannosaurus, Sue has the real bones on display! A bad choice in my opinion given the history of palaeontology, museums and wars!

@@shahzebnasir4692 we had an actual one where l used to work. It had a serrated edge like some steak knives and wasn't conical.

@@susannadzejachok1247 They are serrated! As are a lot of theropod teeth but if you ever get the chance to go to a natural history museum look at the teeth of a Carcharodontosaurus/Giganotosaurus or Allosaurus. You'll see T-rex teeth are a lot more robust and thick as opposed to the near knife like thickness or rather thinness of the other theropods.

It was another T. Rex, hence the round hole. No other theropod currently known to science could cause that sort of damage.
