T-Shaped Quonset Huts? NOPE!

The question has come up in our Facebook group: what about building a Quonset hut in a T-shape? Real world examples include Sarge's Surplus Hut within Cars Land at the Disneyland theme park; also RAL Kit Homes from Australia.
So is it feasible with a standard Quonset building kit to construct one like this for yourself? This video explores this question and some of the issues related to trying to build this type of Quonset.

First I am not a professional anything, but I do a lot of metal fabrication and build hot rods. Every problem has a solution and sometimes easy is the solution. First thing I would do different is the opening from the main hut would be undersized and a square opening. This would allow for a I beam frame to bear the load better. To solve the water dam issue I would build a c channel to create a space for water to drain. All would be welded in so there would be no structural integrity lose or issue with leaking. Just my two cents.

Hell, build it, spray foam the valley's and then shock cret it and smooth it out, paint it with with bed liner. That would be awesome!! Just a thought. Take care. Hawk out!!

I have to take issue with one thing you said. You said, when mentioning the RAL kit homes that they were not quonset huts because they had a wooden frame. I owned two quonset huts in Morro Bay, Ca in the 90's that were WWII vintage. They had interior steel framing and were clad with standard looking corrugated steel panels that were apparently prebent to the correct radius. The Quonset huts I see in production now are completely different and, as you say self supporting. I feel it is the actual shape that makes it a Quonset hut, because if we go by history, the new self supporting structures are not the same as the originals. I had also considered replacing the steel framing with bent lamination arches of my own fabrication because they were so rusty and wouldn't last much longer. I don't think replacing the steel framing and substituting with wood would have changed them from Quonset huts to some other thing either. I think the RAL kits can legitimately be called Quonset as well.

The Nissen Hut had a steel frame similar to the "Arched Cabin" product of Texas. The ribs are covered with flat sheet steel. A little less complicated to intersect a "T", I think.

What you do is simple, you build the Groin Vault ceiling first to the required size, then you place the Quonset onto four the open sides of the Groin Vault, and you have a cross shaped Quonset hut, or just three huts and have the front door in the other open side of the groin vault.

Being able to 3D model the straps required to bolt the seems together in the valleys is a great tool. To then be able to precision make the straps with all holes lining up exactly is so helpful in the construction. Then, the top needs another skin of thin metal to make it smooth, eliminate the dams, create air pockets, all bolted in to the overlapping structure would increase strength, insulating value and the slipping of snow off the roof to reduce load in winter climates.

Try modeling a center 90 degree central space (steel or wood frame) and but the Quonset sections to 3 or 4 sides. Even ICF would work well. No loss of integrity in a 45

It's a cool idea, but wouldn't it be more practical to just put two side by side and build a little bridge section, maybe even just out of lumber and plywood, say to have a garage in one and the main living space in the other side? I'm in Iowa now, was in Northern AZ near Sedona, I'm trying to find some kind of dwelling that I could actually afford to own without an insane mortgage, and with the snow load here I am thinking quonset hut would be the way to go, and you definitely want to have your vehicle sheltered from the temp extremes, as well as a way to get from the garage to the house without having to be outside in the below zero weather. Anyways great vids, nice to be able to scope some of this out online!

Interresting.. i am taking another approach.. A hybrid quanset. A concrete hub or groin vault with arches designed to match and attach to the quanset. Maintaining all structural integrity.

So how about after you build it. You do framing around the outside and stucco it to take care of all problems. And use a sealant paint.

Just a thought: Why not weld thicker sheet metal to the lower parts of the Quonset triangle like on a regular t-shaped roof, called the valley, and close the upper openings (triangles) with thinner sheet metal? The two Quonset Huts need to sit apart from each other to get the valley and no water can stay behind the "dam" because there is none! For stability one has to install two/three columns at the joint of the two huts. Possible?

Maybe theoretically possible but the reality of trying to do all that extremely fiddly metal work and getting it all sealed up just seems super impractical to me. I would rather just build a totally custom structure from scratch out of curved wood glulam beams and cover it in a curved corrugated metal roof or curved standing seam metal roof. It could be amazingly beautiful and have bitchin details and last for generations. That wouldn't really be an inexpensive building but totally doable. Check these out: www.laminatedbeams.co.nz/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/sound-shell-300x191.jpg www.apawood.org/Data/Sites/1/media/images/products/apa-product-glulam.jpg glenfort.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/10264d982b55d3161780a5412ec1c9a0-min.jpg I mean, if you were some kind of God of Sheetmetal and had crazy skills and this was your passion project, then hey more power to you and I would love to see that! I'm a big fan of following your dreams!

Yes but that is corrugated metal as roofing over a hidden steel framework, and not made with these same type of panels on its exterior.

@@GreatBigRanz Now I see it! Very cool, I was looking around there for any other Quonsets but couldn't find it. So what they've done here is just butt the end of one hut into the side of the other to make a T shape. They aren't mitered and joined together the way I was talking about in the video. These are old WW2 era huts which is awesome. There aren't many of those left any more. I would love to get a vintage hut that I could dismantle and move to our property.

If one is doing a quonset hut as forms to like the fellow did in this video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7CXiax2qJ6Yqps.htmlsi=J63OqQiF1b6Eruar , it could be done because the quonset hut is used as a form to put concrete over.

Sure that's something you could do. One thing I don't like is that spot where, in a heavy rain, the larger one is going to be dumping a lot of water down into the spot where the two are connected. The 7" deep V-shaped channels on the larger building, because of their curving trapezoid shape plus all the little ridges on the panels, are going to be really hard to flash and/or waterproof properly down in that connection. So this takes the Quonset hut system that is naturally very simple and straightforward, and brings a lot of complexity and probably long term maintenance issues. I would definitely not try this in a place where you get snow and a lot of freeze-thaw.

I believe theirs uses some modern-day Quonset parts plus a lot of custom heavy steel work, then clad it in regular corrugated metal for the vintage WW2 look. If I had Disney-sized budgets I would probably do a totally custom structure out of glulam beams to get this shape rather than regular Quonset parts that just aren't meant to be used that way.
