This week on Buckle Up, Harry takes us for a very thorough look at a 70s Icon, the VW van. It may not be as flash as a super car, but we think we might like it more.
We are very grateful for being lent this wonderful VW Campervan by Sweet Campers who you can find at: www.sweetcampe... for all your classic camper needs.

Great video, as an Aussie, I love English humour and laughed all the way through. I have a T2 and agree with most of the review, but mine has a steering wheel on the right (correct) side of the car. It may be old, but so am I by 20 years and seriously, it is in far better condition than me.

Harry, another great review. Owned one (with tarmac view if you lifted the mats) back in the late 80's. I didn't know any better (I was only about 30!) but I wouldn't drive one now - I hung the spare tyre on the front just to have something else between me and whatever I might collide with). Arguably an example of a case when a vehicle should be retrospectively barred from the roads. A very primitive driving experience and a moneypit to boot.

The highlight model had far far better crumple zones and impact absorption than a Volvo from the same era.

Sorry, my ‘71 bed was bigger and didn’t have the leaking pop top. Did have a closet! It does have rack n’ piñon steering. The disk brakes are good with booster.

The Pop top never leaked on us, and it did rain pretty hard while we had it to test

Totally entertaining.... the upper cot is useless and can rip at 2 AM with no warning...horrendous in a side wind....the headrest on the front seat might be part of the poor visibility ? I once left the curtains all closed and tried to move my bus, that was scary... hey look, Steve Wonder is driving !

I'm thinking about buying a VW Bus. Every weekend we go to the mountains to ride horses, fish and stay in a cottage. We don't need a camper, just a van with more storage space than the car. So I started researching VW Buses. I wonder how trustworthy VW Buses would be to drive in the hills. Can you recommend a model or year?

For driving into the mountains its probably not the best car. You have a choice of getting a small engine (this is a 1.6 with 50hp) that will be incredibly slow but probably won't overheat or a larger more powerful engine that will be more drivable but also be more susceptible to overheating due to the tight packaging and restrictive cooling. If your looking for a vehicle with classic charm that might be better suited to that I would point you towards a Land Rover series II or III long wheel base/ 110 defender or a Jeep Wagoneer depending on what's more common where you are.

Oh in that case I think they made some later models just for the Brazilian Market with water cooled engines, one of those would be the one for you

I would suggest buying an original bus, that has limited rust and swap out the engine for a bigger one. The myth that's often repeated itself Bout these bus' is that they break down constantly, but they are air-cooled and need looking after more. They will then look after you. As for the Brazillisn bus' I would stay away from them as the metal is inferior and deteriorate quite quickly. I was told this by an owner of one, but I don't really know if it's true. I have a 71, with a 2.1 engine , upgraded gear box and koni shocks. Its very comfortable and fast!
