The T58 is in the boat, and we're going for a ride. Hang on for the fastest test run I've ever been to!

Thank you so much for the videos, I have been watching for years and you have inspired me. I am building my own turbine powered speed boat with a Boeing 502 turboshaft, it wont get to those speeds but I am hoping it will be as fun to drive as it is to build!

You ought to make occasional videos to show people your progress. There's not enough jet powered boat videos in the world.

You’ve got to love that calm, relaxed hum from the engine as the boat races across the water at speeds in well in excess of what even a built piston engine can do. It’s SO unlike the way that your average supercharged big block sounds like it’s nearing the end of its useful life under similar conditions.

When I watched your vid, I recognized right away that it was an Allison ( RR ) 250 starting up. I love that sound. Then you show the engine with its nicely made exhaust stacks, and there sits a sweet little 250. It's either a C-18 at about 320Hp or a C-20 at about 400, I can't tell. That's a beautiful boat, and it planes gracefully. You guys did a nice job.

Actually, the PT governor, which keeps the rotor speed in a heli constant, is used in this boat as a kind of rev-limiter for the jet drive. It is set at 100%, and Gord controls the fuel to the gas generator with that foot pedal. So the PT speed is directly proportional to water-jet thrust, and it goes up and down as needed to drive the boat.

Very nice boat. it looks like a spaceship. Definitely some big money in that thing Some details about what's in it would be cool, and maybe showing something besides it idling.
@AgentJayZ12 жыл бұрын
During a race, Gord is continually working the throttle between flight idle and 100%. Today, I think he was using a little less than 100% when he was hammering on it. ... maybe out of consideration for his first-time passenger, but maybe because the lake isn't that big.

I had a couple of cameras, but I had no idea what this check ride was going to involve, so I just winged it. Couldn't use the head-cam, and I just threw one cam to Walter. He got some great shots. In the boat, I was holding my cam with both hands trying to fight the G's and the wind. I can't believe how well it turned out. It's good my attention was on the camera, because what I was seeing in terms of acceleration was totally fantastic. You see what I saw!

The boat driver doesn't seem to care about his feet for lack of proper footwear. This is the same as riding a motorcycle with flip flops and shorts=bad news. Very nice little fishing trollor. P.S. You guys do a fantastic job there. Good luck with your endeavors and yes, that is one fast SOB.
@AgentJayZ3 жыл бұрын
Dear Craig. Dear, dear Craig... ... ... you are saying that a boat is the same as a motorcycle, implying that, among other things, a lake is the same as a road... that water is the same as pavement. That having feet inside a hull is the same as having feet on pegs ( outside the (nonexistent!) hull). I don't know how to respond, except incredulously. Yeah, that's the word. PS: When this video was recorded, the driver in the flip flops was a former world champion jet boat racer, so I trusted him to know a thing or two. I guess he still is, and I still do!

@AgentJayZ11 жыл бұрын
As for running at high power, engines get more efficient and cleaner combustors as the science and engineering improves. The three you mentioned are all designs from the 50s, 40s, and 60s, respectively. When they are working hard, you'll likely see a hint of black smoke in the exhaust.

Hi jay , i watched the whole series of eps of rebuilding that engine i loved it, just out of curiosity why they didn't used the engine thrust , to get more speed

The T58 is a Turboshaft engine. It has no thrust.

@@AgentJayZ so if we put a nozel to increase the thrust , the overall out put of shaft will decrease ?

A small amount, but more importantly, the PT will overheat, and become damaged. Lots of money burnt up there, because of a stupid idea, initiated by a misunderstanding of how things work.

Do the boat's foreplanes move dynamically in operation, or are they fixed? That, and how the jet gets trimmed when planing would be tutorials of interest. This looks so cool, my "gotta have one" reflex has been triggered, but I don't have a couple million disposable $$.

You could remove the PT section easily, as I have shown, and will try to again. Taking on the project of fabricating a jet thrust nozzle ( it would not have to be variable), even of fixed area, would be a huge project. I know it has been done, but I have not seen the finished project. Why, though? Pure turbojets are almost useless below about 500 mph, and are only halfway fuel efficient above Mach1. That's why no aircraft use them any more.
