It's not for the attack but for the range. Plus if you go scout your opponent will answer with spears, against which it's better to have longer range than defense... if they can attack your range unit you did something wrong

You're welcome! Farms allow for flexibility ie- gives you extra food to work with in the next age. It's possible to up without farms but is a bit more difficult.

I have the same question! Back in the day when I started to play AOE 2 on HD, I kinda came up with my own build order that I thought made the most sense. It was all fine but I would stay somewhere between 1600 and 1700 ELO. Then I have tried the "official" fast castle build and my mind was blown by the fact that despite looking sloppy (for me anyway), it actually worked and allowed me to get to castle quickly while having great eco. I've been a fan of learning build orders from pros since then. So to answer your question, I have no idea to be honest. All I know is that it works. If I derail to any direction (say, send 2 extra vills to berries or deer instead of makins 2 farms), I don't get to castle as nearly as fast. It would be interesting to know the input of one of the experts who made the strategy.

@@DaddyMouse There's a lot less idle time when you build farms with villagers under the TC as opposed to sending them to deer

If you own age 2 hd edition, install a program called aoe2tools to patch the game so you can play it on Voobly, a client better than Hd, less lagg etc.... and all the pros are playing there.

Well as always it depends. This build is useful when your opponent goes maa into archer. Otherwise can be tough to justify.

hmmm you can try it and see if it works Even if you dont do enough damage, you will at least have something to defend yourself with against, say , a castle drop (which is a strategy often used against beginners who don't build any military until late castle/imperial)
