I wouldn't have gotten the part without watching video of him playing it. I always assumed he just went back to a standard G chord, like everyone else does. But I could see that was not what he was doing. I do have extra time these days!

What's up Doc? I noticed you have good acoustics in your studio and sounds really good on my small tablet. I can imagine how good it sounds to you. It must've taken alot of practice to be able to play fast and sing at the same time. I sing along to alot of my songs also. What first got you into Tull? A friend of mine turned me on to them when I was around Fourteen but haven't been dedicated to them as much as you. Love your site because it brings back alot of good memories for me and playing guitar and singing also. Long live Jethro Tull.

Glad you're enjoying the channel! I first heard Tull at an 8th grade party. She had gotten this new album and wanted us to hear it. It was Stand Up and it sounded so different from anything I had heard. That's when I started following them. Aqualung made a huge impression on me. Loved the music but the lyrics really drew me in. In '72 I saw them live perform TAAB in its entirety. Best show I've ever had the pleasure of attending. Amazing.

Helló Doc! I love the lessons u make. So I've started flat pickink after watching Your Jethro Tull lessons. Special TAAB! @snoozedoctor
@snoozedoctor 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sure. Up, down, up works fine, if that's what feels natural. As long as the strokes are alternated, it's fine. Would love to see your video! Ian Anderson plays his arpeggios with down, up, down, so that's the way I've been showing them. And, to me it's more natural, but the other works just fine!

Once again, thank you for your Tull lessons, the best and so accurate. I’m sticking on one bit… the g strum after the arpeggio. When I listen to Ian and you play it, I hear almost a swing to the strum. Off beat. It’s something about the count right there I’m hearing it but can’t play it correctly . How would one count the beats of the arpeggio thru to the g chord? Does that make sense? 🙃

thanks! question....i started learning this a few weeks ago and i was doing alternate picking on the entire arpeggio instead of doing DOWN-UP-DOWN x 2. Is there any reason why you prefer not to go up on the 2nd hit of of the D-string during the arpeggio and instead do another down stroke? (if im not clear, i am alternating every picking motion)
@snoozedoctor
@snoozedoctor Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! A very good one. I tried the pattern you describe, at least as I understand it. You're saying you play the 6 notes truly alternating, down on A, up on D, down on G, up on A, down on D, up on G? I went back and forth for a while trying to decide which one of the patterns I was going to go with. I thought the recording really sounded like a down stroke each time on the A string. If you look at the video of him playing it live, slowed down to 1/2 speed, you'll see that he does it the way I'm playing it here. So, that's why I went with it. True alternate picking may be more economical though. Either works! Thanks again for listening. Cheers!
@BerndKlanke
@BerndKlanke 10 ай бұрын
Thx a lot, but why not keep up alternate picking in the triplet argeggios, making every second Hit on the a String an upstroke, was easier for me and more logical, too;)
@snoozedoctor
@snoozedoctor 10 ай бұрын
That is the most economical way to do it. I kept going back and forth trying to see which was easiest for me. I couldn't say either was my personal favorite. In the end I decided to watch carefully how Ian played it and demonstrate that. But, like you say, straight alternate picking throughout is more logical. Cheers!

Hey snoozedoctor, many thanks for the tutorial. In the beginning When you play the G chord after playing the A string, do you strum up-down-up? Or what do you play?
@snoozedoctor
@snoozedoctor 8 ай бұрын
After picking the A string it is a down strum and then a raked, or slurred, up strum. I'm copying what I see Ian doing when playing it live.

Thanks! Yeah, this is a maple body Waterloo, made by Collings. It's the 12 fret version. These were designed to emulate the cheap catalog guitars of the 40s. They sound remarkable like a vintage Gibson guitar from that era. Very dry, bright (the maple contributes to the brightness), and the thing absolutely sings in the high register. Cheers!

What kind of picks do you use?
@snoozedoctor
@snoozedoctor Жыл бұрын
These are some super cheap picks that I was given by Sweet Relief, a charity I work with. They come in sheets and you just punch them out. I really like them for acoustic because they are soft, and about medium gauge. Thin picks are too floppy to do all these arpeggios and I don't like the sound of stiff picks for strumming. Give me your mailing address, send to my email, jethrotulllessons@gmail.com and I'll send you a bunch. I literally have sheets of these things laying around. They don't last forever because they are so cheap, and sometimes you need to file down the edges a tiny bit because you've punched them out of the sheet. Not everyone will like them because they are SO cheap, but I really do for acoustic.
