Tabitha’s story begins in Joppa, an ancient seaport along the Mediterranean. You and I might remember this harbor city as the place Jonah fled to when he heard God’s call to Nineveh. Joppa’s international anchorage so well represented, Jonah knew he could board a ship to the farthest reaches of the west-in the opposite direction of Assyria-as soon as he arrived. Further back in its history, Joppa represented the territory allotted to the tribe of Dan in the book of Joshua. When the Danites lost their territory, they were only able to reclaim Leshem.
Centuries afterward, when Solomon built his palace and the temple, the massive cedar logs he conscripted had to come through Joppa’s port, the only natural harbor between Egypt to the south and Akko to the north. Again, a thousand years later at the rebuilding of the temple, the lumber needed to come through Joppa.
Imagine a bustling metropolis, with thriving import-export trade, merchant families living in impressive homes, the sounds of creaking ships, gulls, languages from around the world, temples and houses of worship representing dozens of religions, wine bars and inns with an overflowing clientele of travelers and seafarers, an easy place to get lost in, to start over, to begin an adventure. Joppa also represented the meeting of many cultures, for though it was one Palestine’s most important port cities, and certainly Jerusalem’s most important, Joppa also bordered Samaria and occupied the Phoenician region.
Which brings us to the unique and intriguing story of a woman with dual citizenship, as it were, a woman known for her good deeds, the only woman who was actually called disciple in the entire Christian Testament, whose death rocked her Christian community to its core, and her deliverance by being raised back to life generated widespread belief in the Lord.

That was beautiful 😍❤️ done, researched and taught with enthusiasm and precise. Your research was impeccable in the scriptures and commentary that was easy to understand. Jesus Christ said that He had many folds that believe in His name as the Good Shepherd and how He is no respecter of persons that women should be honored like the men, and taught Peter whom was one of the leaders of the disciples of the Way to get out of the way and to put down tradition of men and ritual of men in order to be available for the LORD unhindered and unshackled toward those traditions and rituals of man. It's so wonderful that the Spirit of God has manifested the glory of God and Jesus Christ, His beloved Son in the lives of Dorcas, the widows, disciples, and Peter. Jesus told Peter when he is converted to strengthen his brethren, and he obviously obeyed as our example to follow. I like what Paul said: Follow me as I follow Christ. Then in the next chapter, verse 1, Initiate GOD...: and Peter said Jesus Christ is our example, follow in His foot steps. Dorcas whom Jesus Christ formed Himself in her, followed Jesus Christ, the One who renewed, delivered, and manifested His peace, grace, and glory in her life and the lives of others surrounding her community!!! Thank you for your blessed teaching, enlightenment, and encouragement what the Lord has done in the lives of Dorcas, the widows, and the disciples who dare to believe the Revelation of Jesus Christ, stayed connected with believers, and become a living epistle for our Savior GOD, Jesus Christ!!!🙏🙏😘🐑

Am smiling with delight! Yes, Peter followed in the way of the Lord, as did Paul, in encouraging and respecting women disciples in the same way as men disciples. This is the Lord's way for us all. Shalom, sister in Christ! Grace and peace, Joanne

I'm not sure if "officially a disciple" is a thing. Disciples were followers or "learners" of Christ. There were the 12, and then the 70, and then there were many of the Way in the book of acts. But Jesus instructs the 12 to "make disciples" of all the nations (literally "go out discipling all nations"). He's talking about discipling converts, not conferring the title of disciple. Apostolos and episkopos and presbyteros seemed to be "official" titles, but disciple would be more of a descriptor. I dunno, maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

Thanks for commenting, and I can see your point. I think what makes this notable is the account's distinction of "disciple" applied to Tabitha. If it were what all Christians already considered themselves to be (which surely, in a certain way, they must have) then "disciple" would not have been a title or descriptor for one particular Christian. Yet, that is what the narrator (who I believe was Luke) made a point of calling Tabitha, while not applying that title or descriptor to others. In this way, from this perspective, there must have been something about that word, and about Tabitha, that meant she was "extra" in some way. I offer, in this video, what I think that extra is.
